What do you think of dark brown walls?

We're about to decorate our newly combined dining room/lounge. We're not changing the existing curtains which are brown/orange/green in the dining room and brown in the lounge.

We've currently got a boring light coloured neutral shade on the walls. I want to be a bit bolder so I thought of dark brown which would go with existing soft furnishings. Dh doesn't agree, he said it will look like poo (literally!).

Thoughts please? Or any other colour recommendations?

Go teal to match that blue/green in the curtain.

motortroll · 06/11/2018 18:51

Mustard yellow

This is our living room. Hessian walls and an authentic 70s back boiler.

I was going to suggest a nice teal colour, or maybe a teal and cream striped wallpaper of some kind.

twosoups1972 · 06/11/2018 19:50

Teal sounds nice. The only thing is, we already have quite a lot of that colour in the house - turquoise/teal glass in the kitchen and accents of teal elsewhere. But it is a nice colour.

What about the blue in the curtains? Or a pale blue?

No to brown, just no!

dontcallmelen · 06/11/2018 21:40

Maybe a darkish stone colour, something like natural hessian but slightly darker.

Mum2jenny · 06/11/2018 21:42

No, not brown but a lighter shade may be ok, apricot white or similar.

Ohjellybelly · 06/11/2018 21:45

I had a 1930s large house and my OH suggested painting the bedroom brown. I couldn't picture it being nice but didn't want any involvement in the decorating myself so let him do as he pleased.
Oh my goodness.....I loved it. We did have a lot of white in the room. The ceiling was white which extended down the walls to meet the picture rail. 8" skirting boards were white as was the carpet, curtains and bedroom furniture. It looked gorgeous and very warm and inviting. All the things I thought it wouldn't be.
Give it a go if you're feeling brave

I have two walls in cream, one wall a feature wall with flowers on a light background and one wall a lovely chocolate brown colour. Looks great!

twosoups1972 · 07/11/2018 11:12

Hmmm, still undecided! I want a contemporary look rather than retro.

We used London clay from farrow and ball in the stairs/hallways. Way too dark and we had to repaint.

arriettyspiders · 07/11/2018 12:57

You could use a shade of blue to match those curtains. I'm not a fan of brown, personally, but that may be because we had to remove a lot of it (paint and wallpaper) from an old house we were renovating.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 07/11/2018 12:59

F&B Tanner's Brown is lovely with the right colours but I'm not sure about it with the orange and green in your curtains.

Would something like Dix Blue work?

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 07/11/2018 13:01

Just saw your post about wanting something contemporary, sorry to say this as you've said they were expensive, but I don't think your curtains feel contemporary.

QuestionableMouse · 07/11/2018 13:03

Dark walls made my huge living room feel tiny and very closed in.

Thirtyrock39 · 07/11/2018 13:11

We are redecorating our lounge and im planning a chocolate brown chimney breast- dh isn't keen and has said about the dirty protest look but we have a very wide lounge and I'm hoping it makes it cosier. I'm also going to get some posh fairy lights strung across it all the time to warm it up a bit. Other walls will be lighter...

I've just painted one wall in a bedroom in London Clay. It's very dark chocolate coloured going to using Natural Calico and white with it.

Greensleeves · 07/11/2018 13:51

I couldn't be doing with brown walls, it would remind me of the dirty protests in the Maze Shock

won't it be horrendously dark and dingy?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 07/11/2018 13:54

Go for a cool grey that picks up on the blue notes in your curtain. V chic.

JanetLovesJason · 07/11/2018 13:59

Very 1970s. My aunty had a dark brown bathroom, complete with shag pile carpet. Which continued up the steps to the matching dark brown corner bath (and round the sides of it).

CatAndMice · 07/11/2018 14:26

Pick the teal out of the curtains.

I think dark chocolate brown only works in massive spaces (shops/ offices/ large, large homes). I’m still not keen, and I think it would be too much in a house.

AnotherPidgey · 07/11/2018 15:09

Go for one of the accent colours in the curtains.

Our lounge was brown when we moved in; a long thin room with 70s inspired feature wall paper on the long wall and some mottled hot chocolatey stuff on the other walls. We called it the cave until we had finished redecorating within 6 months. Everyone who came to the house had a certain expression and pause before politely enquiring if we had decorated before relaxing into relief when we said we hadn't and it was hideous Grin

I like Disgrace's room though. Nicely done and not as overwhelming as a full on 70s original styling would be.
