Hamilton is it worth it?

For some reason I've suddenly decided I really want to see Hamilton. Decent tickets are about £125 and we're up north so train, hotel and food on top. Although we can afford it I'm not sure I can justify the cost to myself. Anyone seen it? Is it worth it?!

100% yes. Worth every penny. I took DD 12 in August and we were in the grand circle and while the leg room is v tight the view of the stage is excellent.

I would go again in a heartbeat

shapeshifter88 · 04/11/2018 19:53

we've just gone to see it for a second time. it is brilliant! our tickets were direct from delfont theatre website £75 each and views were fine.

sm40 · 04/11/2018 19:57

If you like rap! I felt it was like listening to Eminem for a few hours. They sing/rap all the words so you really need to focus. The female lead singer character is fab as she sings more classically. I was meh but my dh loved it!!!

WeShouldOpenABar · 04/11/2018 19:59

If you think the rap will be too hard to follow live, listen to the soundtrack on Spotify repeatedly until show night. It's amazing.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 04/11/2018 20:00

Yup

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 04/11/2018 20:01

If it’s an investment of time and money, listen to the soundtrack beginning to end three times before you go. I did it wrapping last year’s Xmas presents. The lyrics are so clever and every song that starts meh is an absolute grower.

TheSmallishMan · 04/11/2018 20:02

My family and I loved it and thought itbwaa amazing. I really want to see it again. The original West End cast are in their final month before they swap

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 04/11/2018 20:02

Dh is not a fan of musicals or rap, but loved it. But he does love history.

LadyHonoriaDedlock · 04/11/2018 20:03

All the yes. I've seen it twice and would go again in a heartbeat.

Branleuse · 04/11/2018 20:03

I absolutely love it. I saw it blind the first time as my son wanted to go for his birthday, and I really enjoyed it, and then i started listening to the soundtrack and became a bit obsessed and have recently seen it again and it was just brilliant.
Going again on tues.

Btw, its not a massive theatre, so I dont think there are any bad seats in the house. The first lot of tickets i got were £100 and they were brilliant.
i won the lottery so went last time for a tenner and they were front row, but we missed some footwork as the stage was high, and the seats ive got next week were £37 so will let you know how they are.

Have you listened to the soundtrack?

Crimebustersofthesea · 04/11/2018 20:03

Thanks shapeshifter88, good to know the £75 tickets had a good view, I didn't want to spend the money on travel, tickets and then have crap seats. I do like rap so just need to convince DH. He's not into musicals but thinks he might go for Hamilton. If not, sod him, I'll go on my own!

I love musicals and thought it was remarkably average. So not for everyone!

JaiNotJay · 04/11/2018 20:05

I'd recommend listening to the soundtrack first if you haven't already. I booked tickets after reading all the hype. Then bought the soundtrack. There are some good songs, but I still haven't listened to it all the way through, the songs get a bit samey. So I cancelled the tickets, luckily you can get a refund! I might have gone out of curiosity if I was closer to London, but I live in Scotland so didn't really think it was worth the trip.

Crimebustersofthesea · 04/11/2018 20:06

I've heard bits of the soundtrack but kind of wanted to see it and hear it at the same time, if that makes sense. I only even heard of it through watching curb your enthusiasm, now I'm a bit obsessed!

It's great.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/11/2018 20:11

YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.

Branleuse · 04/11/2018 20:12

you can check out the views from different seats here

As I said, its a relatively small venue compared to some. I definitely dont think you need to get the most expensive tickets.

Onemorefireball · 04/11/2018 20:13

Yes! I had £45 tickets and it was still a good view. I would 100% go again.

Branleuse · 04/11/2018 20:13

listen to the soundtrack first. I wish I had. Its so much better when you know the songs, although its still great even if you dont

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 20:14

I have been going to the theatre for 30 years. Plays, musicals and concerts.

Hamilton is not my favourite show but it is the best piece of theatre I have EVER seen.

Dh trains Professional MT performers & he agrees with me.

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 20:16

I was not overwhelmed with the soundtrack at first but when you see the show in the theatre, the combination of staging, choreography and orchestration. It’s a work of genius.

Crimebustersofthesea · 04/11/2018 20:16

Thanks branleuse, that's really useful. I'll have a listen to the soundtrack on Spotify too, although I'm not sure I want to get even more obsessed, it'll be next year before we can go!

Autumndays14 · 04/11/2018 20:18

It's not just about the music - the choreography and staging is unbelievable. I was totally mesmerized! I loved the whole story as well as I'm interested in history anyway but it was just so interesting. Wasn't just a show built around a load of songs if you know what I mean. It's intense, I was laughing, sobbing, whole range of emotions!!
