How much food do you have in the house right now?

Just been speaking to DB who has enough to last him for today and tomorrow plus a box of corn flakes and a mug shot soup thing. We on the other hand could last a fair while and I’ve been putting stuff aside in case of brexit difficulties.

How much do you have in and how long would it last you?

We stock a 3 month minimum, I am aiming towards 6 months.

longwayoff · 28/10/2018 13:37

About 8 weeks. Would stretch to 12.

DramaAlpaca · 28/10/2018 13:40

Loads. Two full freezers & a pantry full of tins & dried goods.

HarrySnotter · 28/10/2018 13:45

Am I the only one not hoarding food? Could do two weeks, three at a stretch.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 13:47

Four weeks at least. I have a 20 cubic foot upright freezer in the garage that's usually quite full. We also have four containers of these freeze dried camping meals in storage (about 110 meals):

Mountain House

They make breakfast ones too. They're not cheap but they're surprisingly good.

We also get spring water delivered and usually have 6 five gallon jugs. We have a cooler in the kitchen for dispensing the water and I use it to make tea and coffee, but they're great to have in case the water goes out.

Lodgeboars · 28/10/2018 13:50

I'd be ready for the apocalypse Grin but I live ages away from a supermarket so we stock up and also grow and freeze a lot of vegetables, fruits etc . Two chest freezers, large pantry, two fridges, sounds ridiculously OTT but nothing goes to waste and its got to be our corner shop, takeaway and supermarket all combined!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/10/2018 13:52

Very little. There’s pasta, rice, and tomatoes. There are some rice snack pots (my eldest grabs them before orchestra rehearsals and eats properly when she returns). We’ve abloaf of bread, a litre of milk, and a small amount of cheese and butter. Plenty of coffee and tea.

I could do the four of us a week of poor meals, but my youngest would be on plain pasta or rice as he hates tomatoes.

I don’t have the space to stockpile, not the cash. Sucks, but it’s the way it is.

I’m doing a bigger shop on Wednesday, but I still won’t have enough for more than a couple of weeks of normal meals after that.

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 13:52

Are people really hoarding due to Brexit?? Oh well, at least I'll get extra thin.

mamaduckbone · 28/10/2018 13:58

I shopped yesterday so I’ve got the week’s food plus basics and a few tins of beans, tuna, soup etc. The freezer has a few more meals in but just normal quantities - I’m not deliberately stockpiling anything.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/10/2018 14:04

I'd say we could last 3 weeks of ok food but not a lot of veg.

Bluntness100 · 28/10/2018 14:06

A few days max, no desire to hoard. That's nuts.

JessicaJonesJacket · 28/10/2018 14:08

About a week of fresh food ... and about another week of tinned. We're not preppers so we're not stockpiling Grin Unless you live remotely, stockpiling just disadvantages the vulnerable. It's a pretty selfish approach.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 14:10

Are people really hoarding due to Brexit??

Not me. Grin

WorraLiberty · 28/10/2018 14:12

Probably 2 weeks worth at a stretch

We really prefer fresh food and our freezer is quite small

TroysMammy · 28/10/2018 14:12

I've always got plenty of food in my house nothing to do with Brexit. More to do with me being greedy and reluctant to do big shops every week.

WorraLiberty · 28/10/2018 14:13

Brexit hoarding Grin Grin

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 14:13

MissConduct 1. Is your name a giveaway to your location. 2. Can I come and live there. 3. Actually no, too scared of Trump: Brexit or Trump?/ aargh 🎃.

whatsthestory123 · 28/10/2018 14:14

I thought i had a decent amount but after reading this maybe not

I do have a small stash for Brexit,pasta.coffee.catfood et

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 14:15

Actually stockpiling in advance benefits the vulnerable since those who have put bits aside when there are no shortages don’t need to scramble to buy what is available in times of shortage.

I don’t want to stock up, my preference would be to eat fresh produce only. But even the most optimistic of people must be feeling a little nervous about the predicted food supply chain issues surely?

Having said that DB just said he will stock up the week before brexit just in case (now that could be selfish stockpiling)

I like to keep a lot of food and water on hand because we've had some terrible hurricanes in the last few years. We lost power for eight days with Hurricane Sandy and the roads were impassable with downed trees for almost that long. We're fairly out in the exurbs. We have a Honda petrol powered generator but if the petrol stations have no power and the roads are impassible you need to have lots of petrol on hand before the storm comes. We just managed to keep the power on during Sandy with it. All of the neighbors came over to charge their cell phones and have a hot shower.

JellieEllie · 28/10/2018 14:21

Just been shopping today so enough to last 4 weeks for myself.
I've bought meat in bulk and frozen it down into portions so I'm set for meals.
I always end up buying sandwich stuff in later in the month as the ham/cheese/bread etc doesn't last or goes off.

Why are people starting to hoard food for Brexit? Genuinely curious!

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 14:23

@LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset yes it is a clue to my location. I'm a New Yorker and live in this lovely area:

Hudson Highlands

2. Can I come and live there. 3. Actually no, too scared of Trump: Brexit or Trump?/ aargh

Of course you can come and stay with us if things get bad with Brexit! My son's off to uni this year so you can have his room. I just hope you're not allergic to cats. We have three.

New York is very progressive politically so you can stay here with little to worry about regarding the knob in chief president.

ourkidmolly · 28/10/2018 14:24

None particularly. A few tins of tomatoes and there's chips and peas in the freezer. I suppose there is flour etc. I have zero concerns about food shortages come Brexit. I actually find food hoarding quite distasteful. I can barely turn on the TV without seeing the terrible famine in Yemen. They have a desperate situation there and over here there's been a really pitiful response to aid whilst loopers stock up a load of preserved shit in case of...well in case if what? Worst case, we're missing a few items like blueberries or avocados. It's all so wrong.

MintyCedric · 28/10/2018 14:24

Had a shopping delivery yesterday. I generally shop a week at a time but there's always store cupboard stuff and doubles of anything on offer.

It's only DD and I so we could probably manage a couple of weeks without any issues and a bit of creativity.

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 28/10/2018 14:26

Ha ha oh thank you MissConduct, been to NY twice and loved it. Be careful now in case I take you up on your offer ;)
