How much food do you have in the house right now?

Just been speaking to DB who has enough to last him for today and tomorrow plus a box of corn flakes and a mug shot soup thing. We on the other hand could last a fair while and I’ve been putting stuff aside in case of brexit difficulties.

How much do you have in and how long would it last you?

About 3 days worth, Tesco is coming Tuesday, presume the end of the world won’t happen before then or do you all know something I don’t?

Parker231 · 28/10/2018 18:35

Many posters here don’t realise where their food comes from and how disruptive Brexit will be to the supply chain, regardless of whether there is a Brexit deal or a crash out. How do you think your food is going to get into the UK without all the legal agreements in place?

VictoriaBun · 28/10/2018 18:46

We could probably last about 6 weeks ( obviously not counting fruit/veg) but last few would be some strange combinations.

PickAChew · 28/10/2018 18:56

Currently enough to keep the boys sweet for about a week. No storage space to massively hoard. I have more flour in stock over the winter, as a matter of course as I use the breadmaker more when the weather's crap.

ragged · 28/10/2018 18:59

275 litres of petrol is legal limit at home in UK. Which is about 72 US gallons.

Cachailleacha · 28/10/2018 19:09

I try to keep the food cupboard and freezer stocked but it gets eaten and I hate shopping.

Cupboard: about 20 cans, 2kg rice, 2kg lentils, 1kg couscous, 2 Christmas puddings, a few jars of peanut butter (just need some bread)

Freezer: 2kg blackberries, not much else...

"who has enough to last him for today and tomorrow plus a box of corn flakes and a mug shot soup thing"

Why so little?

Everyone I know has cupboards with packets and tins of stuff, plus a freezer full of food, and stuff in the fridge.

Does he live next door to a shop that never closes? We are quite rural and would never run that low on food. I keep tins of beans, tomatoes, soup etc, packets of lentils, flour, sugar, eggs etc, spices and herbs, pasta, bottles of soy sauce, chilli sauce etc, plus a full freezer and loads of veg and dairy. I can't imagine having a kitchen with bare food cupboards.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 19:30

why so little

He lives on his own in central London in an apartment. Eats out a lot and shops every few days for what he needs for the next few.

I don't even have enough to last me until tomorrow when I go pick up the food order, unless I wanted to eat tins of stuff on their own and an onion.

That said, I'm not prone to panicking for no apparent reason.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 19:39

@longwayoff , sorry I just saw this

MissConduct that is a stunning place to live. Hopefully it makes the Golden One feel quite distant.

It is a spectacular setting. We also get a great deal of snow in the winter (60 plus inches on average) so those mountain roads can be a challenge. That's why I drive a Subaru with winter tyres. Every morning I drive a road cut into the side of one of those mountains, looking down at the river and it never fails to move me.

As to the Golden One (I don't think that's a nick name we use here), under the US system of government the state has much more control and impact over people's lives than the federal government. So yes, we think about him as little as possible.

Thanks for looking that up ragged. It's good to know that we'd be legal in the UK too. The Honda generator runs like a champ and is very quiet and fuel efficient.

JustBeingJobless · 28/10/2018 19:39

I’m a bit of a food hoarder - not due to brexit, but more that my health and mobility aren’t great and there’s always a chance I’ll have a week where I can’t get out, or it could be icy this time of year, which renders me housebound, so I keep extras of stuff in stock just in case. I’ve always got a full freezer, plus loads of dried and tinned food. I keep several cartons of long life milk, a few bags of pasta/rice etc and jars of pasta sauces/tinned tomatoes and stuff, plus teabags and packets of bread mix for emergencies. We could probably survive for about 3 months if need be.

Dandybelle · 28/10/2018 19:43

What on Earth?! I didn't realise people had so much food. Where do you keep it?! I've got enough for 4 evening meals, and breakfasts and dinners probably for 7 days. But food shop every week 🤷🏽‍♀️

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2018 19:46

DD often springs a friend on me to feed. I just keep basic store cupboard stuff in. Everyone I know does. I can't imagine only having enough food for a few days. My kitchen isn't very big either.

ragged · 28/10/2018 20:02

1 x 454 gram jar of peanut butter = 2670 calories. Which is 1-1.5 days of enough food right there. A 1 kg bag of flour = 5880 kcal (3 people fed for 3 days). 1 bottle of olive oil = 8840 calories (1 week+ for one person). Who doesn't have stuff like that in their cupboards?

I must be playing this game wrong & you guys mean "How long before you'd give up & go shopping for more" rather than "How long before you'd totally starve."

Penguinsetpandas · 28/10/2018 20:06

We haven't got that much in - similar to your brother - we are rural but about 5 doors away from a Co-op that open 7am to 10pm.

NotCitrus · 28/10/2018 20:41

I have about 8 packed cupboards, and two under-counter freezers plus the fridge, mostly so I don't need to get to shops if I'm not well.

I'm expecting price rises next year rather than much in the way of shortages, so anything that keeps I might as well stock up on now before it happens.

Provided we had water, I have a double camping stove and spare gas cyclinders, so would be fine with no extra food and no electric/gas for a month - though the kids would whinge after a week.

Enko · 28/10/2018 21:08

about 2 weeks worth not stock piling just tend to have a stocked up kitchen. my mum was a chef so I was used to lots of stuff around I am much better.. I do bulk buy some items like toilet paper kitchen roll and fizzy drinks. easier and cheaper

katienana · 28/10/2018 21:40

I think I could easily do 2 weeks eating fairly well, beyond that it would get strange or repetitive. We'd miss fresh milk and eggs first. Then fresh fruit although I do have plenty dried. We'd eat a lot of tuna pasta I think. I've got bread flour so could bake bread.
I always have tins of tuna, tomatoes, soup and beans & pasta shapes, have butter, oil, jars of jam and honey, pesto plus loads of herbs and spices. So plenty of ways to flavour food and make it interesting. I would really miss fresh stuff though. I have 2 boys 6 and 2 and they eat like teenagers sometimes! So I always have plenty of food in.

Barbayagar · 28/10/2018 21:48

Full cupboard, full freezer with lots of homemade frozen meals. Just how we roll. Think we'd be ok for 4 weeks or so but missing dairy and eggs.

BlackeyedGruesome · 28/10/2018 23:06

a weeks worth of normality then maybe up to a month of weird combinations. we should be able to make our own gas given that we have lots of lentils and beans in stock. Wink the stench should also deter the looters.

user1981287 · 29/10/2018 19:05

seems Odd to me that at this time of year people haven’t got a bit more in anyway due to possible adverse weather

OP posts:
bumblebee39 · 29/10/2018 19:45

@user1981287

Not everybody can afford to stock pile! Some months I've been lucky to feed my family without using food banks this year...

MissConductUS · 29/10/2018 19:47

It seems odd to me too. We already have 300 pounds of calcium chloride laid in just to deice the driveway. When you need it in the winter the stores run out quickly.

bellinisurge · 29/10/2018 19:48

Loads. Including stuff that I've grown myself either preserved or stored for winter.
