How much food do you have in the house right now?

Just been speaking to DB who has enough to last him for today and tomorrow plus a box of corn flakes and a mug shot soup thing. We on the other hand could last a fair while and I’ve been putting stuff aside in case of brexit difficulties.

How much do you have in and how long would it last you?

I dont think people should stockpile at all, I want to watch the scrambling and screaming grumbles of how mean the EU is. I will feast on their distress Grin

But less sadistically anyone with health or financial issues should start putting things aside now if they can. Doesnt have to be loads just a bit of buffer. I don't get enjoyment from watching the already troubled get more troubled.

Like PPs we aren't hoarding because of Brexit, we just live a fair drive away from a supermarket.
When it snowed last year we couldn't drive to the main road for a week, but it's more normal for high winds to bring trees down and block the road, especially at this time of year, so we have to be ready.

We always have at least 3 weeks of full meals for 6 of us in case we're blocked in when the DCs are home.

We stocked up recently so right now we have enough food, toiletries, cleaning products etc to last us for 2 months. After that we'd still have food but we might be eating some odd combinations!

When the DCs were small we didn't have much money, so now we always donate to local food banks.

About 1-2 weeks of fresh food (cold meats, 3-4 types of cheese, fresh veg and fruit, yoghurt, milk, egg salad, russian salad), homemade soup, a full freezer (meat, garlic bread, ice cream) and a cupboard of pasta, rice, etc.

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/10/2018 14:31

Probably enough to last a couple of months, on the basis that I rarely eat more hancince a day and so long as I didn’t mind eating odd meal combinations - I don’t have much “structure” in my freezer contents and stored tins and dry goods are quite random.

Haven’t even considered hoarding for post-Brexit. Bit dramatic.

Hazardswan · 28/10/2018 14:38

Bit dramatic.

Fail to prepare and prepare to fail.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 14:40

bit dramatic

Is the drama not caused by those who haven’t put anything aside just in case and are then panic buying?

I reckon ive got 2 or 3 weeks worth

RememberUs · 28/10/2018 14:43

Just been to the supermarket to top up the food to get us through to next weekend. If I used up all the stock, tins, dried pasta and baking goods I reckon we could survive for around 1 month. However we would not be eating meat, dairy or veg in that mix as that is what I buy weekly. We live within walking distance of 2 supermarkets and a host of other shops and are financially well off so it is less of a concern for us.

I may tidy up my cupboards and balance my stock prior to Brexit but that's it. I will be more worried about DH job and the general state of the UK economy.

longwayoff · 28/10/2018 14:44

MissConduct that is a stunning place to live. Hopefully it makes the Golden One feel quite distant.

ragged · 28/10/2018 14:44

food that DC like to eat: probably 10 days. Food in case of apocalypse: probably 6 weeks. We are pigs & eat a lot, so probably could go to 12+ weeks if we rationed.

HereForTheLineEyes · 28/10/2018 14:46

Probably 3/4 wks if we were careful and creative. We aren't deliberately stockpiling, but I am quite good at making a meal out of not very much. We have hens which we get eggs from and I tend to buy very big bags of potatoes/rice/pasta and buy toilet roll and baby wipes in bulk etc because we are a larger family.

We have recently started donating to a foodbank, if I did feel like stockpiling more food was necessary I would do it in a way that still allowed me to donate to the foodbank. Why have 3 months worth of food when someone in your town doesn't have enough food for that day or week?

Spankyoumuchly · 28/10/2018 14:47

Until Thursday. I have odd things in the store cupboard which wouldn't make a meal. I have a lot of frost in the freezer at leftovers in food bags but not enough for a family of four.

WorraLiberty · 28/10/2018 14:48

Fail to prepare and prepare to fail.

It's Brexit, not Armageddon Grin

Hazardswan · 28/10/2018 14:52

worra

We're making ourselves the North Korea of Europe that's more than enough Armageddon for me Grin

EssentialHummus · 28/10/2018 14:55

Two weeks. Since having DD I’ve tried to buy in and store another week’s worth - Brexit, snow, serious illness, whatever, I feel better having it here.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 28/10/2018 14:58

OMG do we all have to get the same haircut, Hazard? Grin.

I probably have enough to feed us all for about 3 weeks - although it would get a bit boring and odd after the first couple. Again, we're rural and so I'm not deliberately saving stuff up.

After that DH could hunt for meat - and I could probably whip up nettle soup.

Bowchicawowow · 28/10/2018 15:00

You sound like you’d be fun at a dinner party Hazardswan.

dudsville · 28/10/2018 15:03

I don't know. Te fridge is full of fresh stuff. The freezer is full of frozen stuff. The pantry's full of .... pantry stuff.

LaDameAuxLicornes · 28/10/2018 15:05

Loads. I don't hoard, I just love to cook and never mealplan so like to have full fridge/freezer/storecupboards, take advantage of offers or our infrequent farmers' market etc. It's never occurred to me to try to calculate how long we could survive on them for, though.

Hazardswan · 28/10/2018 15:08

bless for shits and giggles I'm gonna say yes. Everyone gets a lob. Long hair is annoying and bobs don't suit everyone. I'm putting that in my letter to Theresa May on the 9th as a suggestion anyway Grin

bow I feel almost molested by the middle class'ness of your comment....my soul feels sordid by it almost Hmm I like it!

How much food do you have in the house right now?
unlimiteddilutingjuice · 28/10/2018 15:12

DH fancies himself as some kind of homesteader/survivalist so our kitchen is currently full of hundreds and hundreds of "foraged" apples.
We could live a long time if we only wanted apple crumble, apple sauce and cider.

CraftyGin · 28/10/2018 15:14

I shop everyday, so really just have a couple of meals in the house at any one time.

Bowchicawowow · 28/10/2018 15:14

Hazardswan I am not remotely middle class. It’s just a turn of phrase. Here’s another one. ‘Nutty as a fruitcake.’

bumblebee39 · 28/10/2018 15:15

Lucky to do a week... Although this is the thin end of the month to say the least...

I used to be a terrible food hoarder but literally do not have the means to be anymore...

cushioncovers · 28/10/2018 15:17

Fridge food. Only about two days worth. Cupboard and freezer food about 3 weeks.
