How much food do you have in the house right now?

Just been speaking to DB who has enough to last him for today and tomorrow plus a box of corn flakes and a mug shot soup thing. We on the other hand could last a fair while and I’ve been putting stuff aside in case of brexit difficulties.

How much do you have in and how long would it last you?

A month easily but probably two really. Would get a little odd combination wise at the end but I have also stocked a little for Brexit. Need to get a few more items especially things that are from other EU countries. I figure if it's worrying for nothing then we'll just use it in time next year. Haven't purchased any odd foods or anything just items I know we eat and will keep.

Jaimx86 · 28/10/2018 15:21

We only really eat fresh food (fish, seafood, eggs, veg, fruit) so have done a shop today and will need to do another one on Tuesday. Outside of the fridge, we have x2 tins of tuna for DH’s lunch, teabags, x3 Tilda rice packs, x2 tins of veg (to mix in with the dog food), gin ice pops, x1 frozen ready meal, and an unopened milk. Our cupboards are always empty, but fridge is full.
We do plan to stock up on some packet food we could eat if we had to following Brexit, and I think that will be mainly frozen fish and veg.

I need to stock up on those gin ice pops!

We're really stocked up, because I have recently bought a chest freezer and stocked it. I bought a couple of large meat boxes and froze it all in portions, and lots of frozen vegetables. This is mostly for budget reasons tbh, shopping costs were getting ridiculous, buying in bulk works out much cheaper. I probably will try to stock up a bit with cat food, water, pasta and rice, coffee and other necessities before Brexit too, just in case. It's not like it will go to waste. I can't really fit that much in anyway, because our flat is very small!

BitchQueen90 · 28/10/2018 15:57

About 2 weeks worth. I can't stock any more than that due to lack of storage and the fact that it's just DS and I at home so too much fresh spoils quickly.

viccat · 28/10/2018 16:01

Probably a few weeks worth at least although it would get quite boring once I run out of anything fresh. But if I was only eating the rice, pasta, tinned beans, frozen veg etc. with various condiments I have in, then I wouldn't starve for a while.

TroysMammy · 28/10/2018 16:35

By the time Brexit happens only tins of corned beef will be in date.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 16:55

Well only if brexit is significantly delayed. Most staples have much longer than five months on them

Hey guys: you've got generators to go with the freezers, right?
Plus lots of stored fuel for the generators.
Coz the electricity grid will go down fast come the apocalypse, you know.

Justanotheruser01 · 28/10/2018 17:15

Possibly 3 weeks of odd concoction eating because were hungry not what we really want type meals.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 17:17

Who mentioned an apocalypse? Confused

OP posts:
ginghamstarfish · 28/10/2018 17:21

I always have the cupboards full, freezer full. Always done it, but my DH grumbles about it. Habit I suppose as we never got a lot to eat as kids. I've tried not doing it, but it's good to know we'd be ok for a couple of weeks in case of dire emergency.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 28/10/2018 17:23

3 american type freezers full !

LondonLassInTheCountry · 28/10/2018 17:24

Alot in the pantry too

WitchyMcWitchface · 28/10/2018 17:24

Normal seasonal eating in my life is seen as horrible shortage and deprivation in the snowflake generation

ragged · 28/10/2018 17:35

mentioned...
apocalypse: Lodgeboars
8 days no power: MissConductUSA
survivalist fancier: Unlimited-d-juice
6 month target: RedneckSt

We must have at least 4 bags of flour (different types). i reckon that & the oils/spices would be last to go. We throw away very little food, so I think we're managing about right.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 17:39

8 days no power: MissConductUSA

Just to clarify, we lost power for 8 days after a hurricane and managed to stay on generator for most of that time (we shut it off when we went to bed). We had enough food and water for several more weeks.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 17:41

Most people with full cupboards are not preparing for an apocalypse..

OP posts:
lodgeboars · 28/10/2018 17:43

I was joking, not actually preparing for an apocalypse, the rest of the post explained why we had lots of fridges and freezers, but in the event of a zombie apocolypse, the freezers will be ok, as long as we don't run out of wind. Wink

RoseMartha · 28/10/2018 17:45

Dinners wise six days. But probably could live off odd things in the cupboard for another five days.

ragged · 28/10/2018 17:45

MissConduct, how much fuel did you need to run the generator, where do you store the fuel? I have a weird feeling there are strict UK rules about how much fuel can be stored on domestic premises.

cheesefield · 28/10/2018 17:48

I batch cook every weekend so we always have 10+ chilli/bolognese/meatballs plus usual cupboard stuff. I'd guess we'd survive 6 weeks on what's in the house.

leafgrass · 28/10/2018 17:53

I have just hoarded in terms of body fat. Who knew that was a good idea as it turns out?

I still can afford to lose up to 3 stones to be at the lowest healthy BMI. Quite a lot of energy stored up in that fat. As it is, I'm just out of the overweight category. I'd have to donate my food to DS who is skinny and growing if there was a shortage.

SilverApples · 28/10/2018 18:10

Two freezers, two fridges, a fully stocked pantry and a garden with herbs and winter vegetables on the go. Not hoarding, just normal for me. Consequence of a childhood where cupboards were usually bare due to poor planning rather than poverty.

MissConductUS · 28/10/2018 18:24

MissConduct, how much fuel did you need to run the generator, where do you store the fuel?

I have consulted with DH on this. The 6000 watt generator, which was enough to power most of the house (we have propane heat, water heater, clothes dryer and stove/hob) used about 7 gallons a day of petrol, running about 16 hours a day. DH had 6 5 gallon containers, some of which he was able to refill once the roads were clear. Some petrol stations had generators. These are the containers:

No-Spill 1450 5-Gallon Poly Gas Can (CARB Compliant)

They're fully approved and as safe as they can be considering what they hold. We have two acres of property and he kept them in a shed away from the house. He still has one or two full in case of an unexpected outage and adds a petrol stabilizer to extend the shelf life.

As long as the container is approved I don't think that there's a limit on how much you can keep here. I live in an area with fairly low population density. We can't see any of our neighbors.
