Anyone else dread the clocks going back

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 27/10/2018 11:11

I hate the long dark nights
Go in to work in the dark
Come home in the dark
I find myself getting quite anxious and low as the weeks go on
Try and embrace the cosy element but I miss daylight
I am the grinch I know Grin

Dread it. Autumn is nice but I'm so low and tired over winter. I live in the wrong country.

April2020mom · 27/10/2018 18:22

I love dark nights because I can smuggle up in bed and sleep. And during the day time I turn on the fire in my fireplace and generate heat for the apartment. Also I can now make hot food and drinks at night as well.

CountFosco · 27/10/2018 18:22

Love the winter, you just need to embrace it and try and slow down a bit. I grew up in the far north and would like us to stay at GMT all year round.

Totopoly · 27/10/2018 18:22

I hate it. In fact, I have no words to describe how much I hate it.

Agree with @80sMum's solution.

I also hate Autumn generally, along with Christmas, Bonfire Night, Halloween, candles, telly, blankets and all that stuff. The clocks going back is the worst night of the year, for me.

Roll on 22nd December, when it starts to get lighter again.

FWIW, I can deal withJanuary, as there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. And from the start of April onwards, everything is wonderful.

Totopoly · 27/10/2018 18:23

@ilovesooty, I love you.

I hate the dark evenings. I don't like winter clothes much. I miss gardening after I've been at work all day. I HATE scraping the car.

I do like the cosy fire and candles though.

HeffalumpsnWoozles · 27/10/2018 18:27

Love it, as another anxiety sufferer I hate summer & long for dark, cold days. Can’t really explain why but I feel so much more relaxed in the autumn/winter months.

Zoflorabore · 27/10/2018 18:31

I like it. I like having dinner when it's dark and doing the whole bedtime routine aka the witching hour is so much easier when dd doesn't realise that it's not as late as it looks Grin

One word that sums it up for me is cosy.

I like all of the seasons we have for different reasons and it's interesting how we just adapt to it. I also prefer dressing for autumn and winter.

ilovesooty · 27/10/2018 18:34

@Totopoly I agree with every word.

Light at the end of the tunnel by January when the novelty of all the cosy snuggly crap has worn off for people and the days are drawing out again.

Cakemonger · 27/10/2018 18:35

I do try to get into the spirit of winter, lighting candles etc. But the force is greater than I am and a few weeks in I realise I am horrendously low and tired. I function like a drone until about May.

yawning801 · 27/10/2018 18:37

I think I have seasonal affective disorder, last year I had a HUGE dip after the clocks went back, it only really started getting better in April. O hate the dark mornings, getting up at 6:15 and having to scrabble around for my lightswitch (that has just reminded me to change the bulb which blew at around midnight last night), opening the door for two seconds and being cold for the next hour, shivering under 5 layers of clothing... I could go on!

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 27/10/2018 18:39

The clock changes only makes a difference for a few weeks anyway - by the time you get to the end of November it would be dark when you got up and dark when you got home from work however you set your clocks. There's only around 7-8 hours of daylight in December and January if you're lucky anyway.

We have this debate every year but we can't escape the fact that in winter in the UK it gets dark. Really dark. For a long time. On Scotland it's even darker. It's just our geographical position. It's the yin and yang of living in the uk - the summer gives, the winter takes away etc etc. That's why we put up lights, burn fires and drink more booze than is good for us in the winter (well we also do that in the summer too but you get the point).

Otherwise go and live on the equator where the sun rises and sets at the same time every day of the year.

Totopoly · 27/10/2018 18:41

@ilovesooty 'Cosy'. Boak. Grin

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 27/10/2018 18:41

Although having said all that we are due to move out of town to a small village in the new year and I am dreading driving in the dark already!

RadioDorothy · 27/10/2018 18:45

I find the dark and the cold does lower my mood, but my overall dread of the clocks going back is that we get a step closer to winter vomiting season. I'm phobic and for the next six months everybody will be talking graphically about projectile vomiting and bugs etc etc. I hate it, Christmas was ruined for me in the 2007 epidemic and will be for the rest of my stupid life.

Like someone else said, the clocks going forward is the highlight of my year too.

WheelyWheelySpookilicousCotee · 27/10/2018 18:47

I don't mind the darker nights, love the cosy feeling but

I hibernate....go to bed earlier and earlier. I was in bed for 19:30 the other night and slept

Rosehip10 · 27/10/2018 18:50

Why should the rest of the UK suffer due to Scottish farmers demands on the clocks going back?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2018 18:54

I hate it, I don't mind cold, wet etc. I hate dark afternoons and evenings. It feels claustrophobic and makes my anxiety worse, so I find it interesting that it helps others.

Rockbird · 27/10/2018 19:03

Absolutely love it too. Have been counting down the days since the clocks went forward. I love everything about this time of year and am a totally different person in the colder months. My energy returns and I can start to live again.

dudsville · 27/10/2018 19:05

i don't mind it as it's what I'm used to, but I don't value it and would welcome a static clock!

GandolfBold · 27/10/2018 19:07

DS hates it. He has Asd and he can't get that just because it's dark doesn't mean you have to be in bed.

He spent much of last winter having meltdowns about going to bed at 4pm.

LimpyLampy · 27/10/2018 19:08

I hate when the clocks go back. I’ve actually been dreading it since the beginning of October. I particularly hate driving in the dark.

Every year I hope they abolish it.

almondsareforevermore · 27/10/2018 19:18

When I’m wide awake tomorrow the clock will say 4am. The pets and I will want all our meals an hour early. we’ll be falling asleep at 8pm.
This will go on for at least a fortnight before we get used to the bloody stupid messing about with the clocks.
What is the point? There’s nothing to stop anyone going to bed earlier or later, the whole nation does not collectively get up at 7.30 to start work at 9.
Abolish it now!

Rudgie47 · 27/10/2018 19:45

I don't like walking about in the dark on an evening. Unless its early on I don't think its very nice really.

joiningmum · 27/10/2018 19:47

I dislike the dark mornings and miss waking up to sunrise for a bit of peaceful beauty before the house wakes up. 2 weeks ago I could've had breakfast out on the deck, this morning it was still pitch black.
I hate the long dark evenings and struggle to stay awake. I then get over tired and struggle with a cycle of insomnia for weeks. I have SAD every year, sometimes the depression is very bad. I like to snuggle up and keep cosy but I can do that without the long dark nightsr. October - Jan weather is hideously dark and depressing. I feel quite trapped by it.

The start of spring also gives me anxiety (ASD and don't manage change well).
