Went to see this last night and just wow. Don't think I've ever say through a movie that gave me chills quite like that did.
Would love to know how they time travelled Brian May and John Deacon for this because they were outstandingly good.

Anyone else seen it and loved it?

I'm in two minds as to whether to go see at the cinema or to wait till its on TV. I knew Queen through work in the early 1980s - the company I worked for did a little work for Queen Productions Ltd, and got to meet the band members from time to time. All lovely guys.
I worry seeing the film will ruin my memories of a rather wacky time I had working in London, and seeing it on a small screen might be better and I won't be embarassed crying at home I was rather fond of the guys they were always really nice to me, and Jacky who worked in the office and was the main person I was in contact with was an incredibly nice lady.

I thought it was going to be terrible, but I’ve seen it and it's not that bad, lot's of events have obviously been amalgamated, simplified and streamlined, but they’ve managed to get a lot of stuff into the 2 hour time frame.

I was surprised they had “baggage handler” as ‘the’ Pre-Queen job rather than Freddie running the market stall with Roger, but I guess it was easier to introduce Smile, Brian, Roger and Mary all at the same time.

They’ve also disneyfied things quite a bit, Freddies Drug fuled lifestyle of the early 80’s is massively toned down, I’m pretty sure the rest of the Band weren’t squeaky clean and disapproving either.

Jim Hutton seems to be an amalgamation of Jim Hutton and Winnie Kirchberger, He’s introduced as the cater for one of Freddies parties, like Winnie

And Paul Prenter is an amalgamation of every bad person who ever lived and is portrayed as being the puppeteer behind every bad decision the band ever made...

The reason they practised so much for Live Aid was to try and make up for the fact they played Sun City during the apartied the year before, not because they knew Freddie had Aids.

They also have Freddie growing his moustache right after he comes to terms with his sexuality, so he has his 80's look in the 70's. In fact they seem to have the "Personal timeline" set a few years after the "Music Timeline" for most of the movie.

Thought Mike Myers did an excellent job as the record company boss.

Had to look at the credits to work out which character he played!

Feelalone85 · 03/11/2018 00:12

Saw it this evening and OMG, goosebumps! Amazing film!

TroubleComesInSmallPackages · 03/11/2018 00:29

Saw it earlier this week and will definitely go again at some point.

Speaks volumes for the appeal of Queen/Freddie that the friends i went with are very different ages and we all loved it.

Friend 1 - 61yo remembered all sorts about that era, watched Live Aid as it happened; me - 43yo, remembered the other kids at school talking about Live Aid but didn't see it at the time as parents weren't into pop/rock music, happy memories of moshing along to Bo Rhap a la Wayne's World, with my first boyfriend in his chocolate brown Austin Allegro when he passed his driving test; Friend 2 - 24yo...Freddie Mercury died before she was even born...all 3 of us in tears at the end.

Just bloody marvellous!

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2018 11:28

I loved it. I know the timing was a bit out and it didn’t show the full extent of Freddie’s lifestyle but it’s a 12A. As I’d read somewhere else If they’d gone too much into that it would just have been like a Queen version of The Doors. Its also not meant to be a documentary so there was always going to be a bit of artistic licence. I don’t really care about the reviews I think reviewers are looking for something different in films than I am which is basically just to be entertained.

I loved the Live Aid segment I wish I’d seen that in the IMAX. I thought Rami Malek was outstanding and the rest of the cast were good too especially the band.

Poor Freddie just too young to die. He was only the age I am now which brings that home :(

SimplySparklingSoloSparklers · 03/11/2018 23:12

Hiya, I saw that you want to go and see Bohemian Rhapsody. I took Dd this evening and it is fab. If you'd like to go and you would be going with your Dh or a.n.other, I can give you a Meerkat cinema code if you'd like it and so would only need to pay for one ticket. Let me know :)

Crap! That was to Dumbledoresgirl

blondeemily · 03/11/2018 23:19

OP I almost started a thread for the same reason. The film is incredible and I hope it gets the credit it deserves. I am 28, so not of the Queen era, but I still really appreciated it and have a new-found enjoyment for their music. Rami Malek who played Freddie Mercury was just phenomenal.

MaryDollNesbitt · 03/11/2018 23:22

Saw it Wednesday night. I honestly cannot remember the last time I sat totally enraptured by a film. I was 100% hooked from beginning to end and I bounced between every possible emotion. Easy 10/10 from me.

A lot of people are talking Oscars for 'A Star is Born'; I'd personally hand Bo Rhap THE FREAKING LOT. It was fucking marvellous.

TheNavigator · 04/11/2018 08:27

I loved it too, great film. I don't understand why the critics were so snotty about it. OK, it didn't go into great detail about his private life, but that reflected Freddie himself - he wasn't like the oversharing 'stars' of today selling magazine stories about their 'journey'. I had forgotten how many great songs they had and Rami Malek was electrifying. I'd see it again, and their are not many films I say that about.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/11/2018 10:22

Off to see this with DP and DD (14) this morning. Can’t wait. Just need to stop off at the Coop for popcorn and sweeties first though 🤗🤗🤗

bringbackthestripes · 04/11/2018 10:23

Loved the film. Rami Malik made a better Freddie Mercury than sacha Baron Cohen any day. I thought SBC was an odd choice so I’m glad he dropped out.

HermioneWeasley · 04/11/2018 21:38

Loved it!

Only thing is I’d have made it a 15 and not glossed over his lifestyle. Also, what the fuck was Mike Mywrs’ Accent supposed to be? It was mostly Yorkshire but had some Scottish in there too.

I loved the actual Queen footage at the end where FM is owning the stage in black leather,a nd John Deacon is wearing a tank top that looks like his mum knitted it 😂😂😂

PetraDelphiki · 05/11/2018 16:12

Loved it - cried at the end. What's really sad though is if you listen to their last albums (post 87) pretty much every song is telling you that he's dying...i was a teen at the time and didn't really think about it. Now I cry buckets when I hear them - the sadness in the lyrics!

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/11/2018 16:37

I think that, much like The Greatest Showman, BR is going to prove critic-proof. It had a massive opening weekend. I think a lot of critics wouldn’t have been happy unless they had included that party with the dwarves and the cocaine...

For those making decisions about whether to take DC, the BBFC Insight guidance is as always very helpful (but can contain spoilers).

Effendi · 06/11/2018 18:31

Just watched it. It was a rubbish streamed copy but my god, what a fantastic film. I didn't want it to end.

God bless Freddie.

tenorladybeaker · 06/11/2018 20:39

@Effendi did the rubbish streamed copy include the bit in the credits where it said how many thousands of jobs and how many person-hours of work went into creating the thing that you think was fantastic but don't feel you should have to pay anyone to create?

Effendi · 07/11/2018 02:56

Gee I thanks Tenor, now I remember why I don't post very my much on here. Always someone wanting to take the shine off.
You don't know my circumstances or if I plan to take an elderly relative to see it at the cinema also.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 07/11/2018 04:52

Saw it at the weekend. But my God, it made me feel mortal. I had my first kiss to Bohemian Rhapsody. Live Aid was a third of a century ago, and Freddie's been gone for 27 years. Once we were all filthy/gorgeous, and this reminded me that he still is.

Beeblot · 07/11/2018 11:51

Loved it. It brought back a lot of memories; Queen were my first musical obsession when I was about 10. Then I decided I preferred Guns N Roses and gave all my Queen tapes away, only to regret it later and buy them all on CD.

Remi Malek was excellent I thought - it's hard playing a real person, especially someone as iconic as Freddie. The way they recreated his voice was also very clever.

I've been thinking about Freddie a lot recently and what's really sad is that he apparently only missed out on the life-saving drug treatments we now have by a few months. On the way home from the cinema, I was listening to a singer called John Grant, who - coincidentally - is also HIV positive. But he can expect to have a pretty much normal life expectancy and I think that's amazing. I worked with a guy who was HIV positive so got to hear a bit about the drug treatments now available and how the condition is now a chronic one rather than a death sentence. It really is a different story now.

I wonder what Freddie would be doing now had things turned out differently.

creamcheeseandlox · 07/11/2018 21:05

Just seen it. Bloody amazing film. The likeness of the band members is unbelievable. Totally teared up on the scene when he told the band he had aids 😢 and also when Mary in the cab was telling him people do love him...so poignant.

Hope there are some award nominations, Rami Maleks work on that film was just fabulous. Watched live aid when I got home.

janaus · 08/11/2018 13:13

Likenesses were very well done. Particularly Brian May.

BalloonSlayer · 11/11/2018 14:52

Saw it yesterday - loved it

@Scifi101 did you really not spot Mike Myers, even when he said "no group of teenagers is ever going to put Bohemian Rhapsody on in the car and head bang to it" and then look RIGHT at the camera? Grin

MsMiaWallace · 11/11/2018 20:19

Went to watch it last night who is a huge Queen fan (DS is named Freddie...)

Wow it was fantastic!
Yes there are some inconsistencies with timelines etc. Rami Malek is bloody brilliant playing Freddie. I did love the Live Aid bit.
