Went to see this last night and just wow. Don't think I've ever say through a movie that gave me chills quite like that did.
Would love to know how they time travelled Brian May and John Deacon for this because they were outstandingly good.

Anyone else seen it and loved it?

I will probably have to go on my own to see it. Will my handbag be enough for tissues, or should I take a backpack..?

Slightly tongue in cheek, but only slightly, as No One But You makes me cry every time I see it (so I try not to)

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/10/2018 15:18

Thank you both for answering.

I've been debating whether to see it as these things are sometime ruined when you know too much about the subject.
The positive feedback from people is certainly convincing me.

Incidentally, Jim Hutton's book is only £2.99 on Kindle at the moment:

I saw them perform at Knebworth in 1986, going to see the film tomorrow - can't wait!

EBearhug · 27/10/2018 16:01

I saw it last night. I had heard a couple of reviews where it had talked about how there's a limit to how much material you can fit in to 2 hours, so they had to leave some things out, and I was also aware the timeline was "adjusted" in places, and it's not a documentary. I am glad I knew that in advance, because there were still one or two bits which grated, but I can accept artistic licence.

I really liked how they started with Smile and meeting Mary and so on. And I was initially surprised at the point they ended it, but it did work well.

I thought Brian was absolutely spot on, and John. Not quite sure they got Roger, but close enough, I suppose. Rami Malek did a really good job - that was always going to be a difficult role, whoever did it. I'm glad it wasn't Sacha Baron-Cohen, because I find him really annoying, and even if he had done it well, I would have still known it was him.

I chatted to an old friend who'd also been to see it where he lives - we both admitted we cried all the way through Live Aid (which originally when I was 13, was before we had a TV, and I only saw highlights at a friend's house.)

I had been in two minds before going, but I knew I had to know for myself. I think they did a good job.

MoonriseKingdom · 27/10/2018 16:44

I’m going tonight. Really glad to see positive comments here. I can still remember the concert after he died. I was a bit too young when Live Aid was on but my dad introduced me to Queen. If I could go back in time and see someone in concert Queen at their peak would be high on my list.

twoheaped · 27/10/2018 16:57

This thread has inspired me to go and see it, despite every review I have read saying it's not great.
I saw them live twice and didn't want the film to taint those memories iyswim.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/10/2018 23:03

I saw them at Newcastle in '86 (with Status Quo and Xeno as support)

The film was brilliant , the mannerisms were spot on ('especially of Brian May who I'm a huuuge fan of)

My DH isn't a fan but he enjoyed it too.

Halsall · 27/10/2018 23:20

I saw the trailer a couple of times last week when seeing different films. I thought I'd seen Gwilym Lee (who plays Brian May) somewhere before, then it dawned on me - he was Inspector Barnaby's sidekick in Midsomer Murders Grin

drigon · 28/10/2018 00:04

Saw it earlier tonight and really enjoyed the film. The music is amazing (though I've never been a massive Queen fan) and I liked the band dynamics too. Rami Malek who played Freddie was wonderful and I liked the Brian May actor as well. Definitely worth seeing.

drigon · 28/10/2018 00:05

The Live Aid bits were the best part, great memories!

SistersOfHearsey · 28/10/2018 01:22

Halsall the actor who played Deacon was the little boy from the first Jurassic Park movie!

I went last night with my husband and loved it. I expected to be sad but I also found the ending very uplifting. We were both buzzing about it on the way home.

SpeckledyHen · 28/10/2018 06:31

I’m not sure if I want to see it . I was at the Christmas Eve 1975 gig at the Hammersmith Odeon and Live Aid and don’t want those memories ruined .

QOD · 28/10/2018 06:44

Don’t think it would ruin it

No idea why critics panned as every personal review is that it’s amaing

Once you can get by the whole ‘omg Peter Beale’ thing 😂

Hazza000 · 28/10/2018 07:01

Can't wait seeing it today I always loved Freddy M

maddiemookins16mum · 28/10/2018 10:16

I cannot wait to see it. Queen at Live Aid were amazing (only just slightly beaten by U2 but they’re my favourite band so I would say that). I can honestly say that Freddie is the one music star I truly miss not being here anymore. He really was special.

SistersOfHearsey · 28/10/2018 10:24

QOD Roger was the one who didn't fit for me. The real RT was ruggedly handsome and movie RT was a bit more pretty boy and looked a lot younger than the others all through.

I don't watch EE so missed the whole Beale thing until I read something afterwards.
That said, he played the part well.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 28/10/2018 10:29

Ben Hardy has a very deep voice in real life, i was surprised that he actually gets it pretty close to Rogers talking pitch but he misses the raspyness.

Andromeida59 · 28/10/2018 10:37

I'm hoping to go see it soon. I just have mixed emotions as I wish my Dad was here to see it with me. He was a massive Queen fan and I remember his reaction the day Freddie died. We got to see them together eight years ago in Manchester but it still feels bitter sweet.

theluckiest · 28/10/2018 10:41

I saw it on Thurs and loved it. We sat there until the lights came back up & nobody moved.

I'm still thinking about it 3 days later as it gets into your head. My brain has been waking me up at unreasonable times during the night to sing Queen's greatest hits...

I'm seriously considering going again with DH and taking the DC. I NEVER go back to watch a movie at the cinema as I'm tight but think they'd all absolutely love it.

(Incidentally, I went to uni with the bloke who plays Jim Hutton...didn't actually recognise him until I saw his name in the credits and the penny dropped Grin)

sonnybo · 28/10/2018 10:44

I absolutely loved the film! I’m going to see it again next Friday! I had been looking forward to this film when it was in production, so when the film critic reviews came in and they turned out bad I was gutted. It seems like the critics had wished for Freddie’s debauchery too be a big part of the film. I think what the film did show was done in a respectful manner. It’s not fair to show such a private part of a dead persons life, so I’m baffled as to why the critics thought not showing it was so bad. I certainly learnt to never listen to critics ever again!

shamofamockery · 28/10/2018 11:03

@theluckiest you lucky thing. I loved him in Shameless!!

LucilleBluth · 28/10/2018 11:35

We saw it last night. DH, DS1 and I cried on and off all the way through. Rami Malek is amazing and pulls off what could have been an imitation in a bad wig and false teeth.

It did focus on Mary too much, she seemed to just pop up to move the story forward but I don't feel they glossed over the gayness at all. Yes, it wasn't an in depth character study but we loved it.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/10/2018 11:45

Wife and I saw it yesterday. There was a couple of girls about 14 yrs old sitting next to us and they were singing every word. As did the couple in the 70s sat behind us. When it finished I noticed a woman about 50 sat in front and she was crying. So take from that what you will!

The casting is superb. It didn't gloss over his life life (and demons) as much as I thought it would and it's worth watching for the Live Aid sequence alone, which is incredible - real goosebumps stuff

There's a few bits that were out of sequence which I spotted even without being their biggest fan. Nonetheless, I thoroughly recommend it.
