How much do you drink?

I drink far too much but just want to know what the average is? I'm currently averaging 3 glasses of wine a night and I feel so bad about it.

I'm a binger unfortunately. I can go without alcohol for weeks and then about once a month on my child free night I'll go out with friends and drink 2 bottles of wine to myself.

If I've got alcohol in the house I'll drink it but I rarely buy it to have at home because of the expense. It adds a lot of money into the shopping bill.

LBOCS2 · 19/10/2018 20:19

That was a badly written post. We've not had any wine in this week so last night I had a couple of gins. Today I went to the shop but have been enjoying the gin so have had one of those before opening the wine.

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2018 20:25

I drink maybe a few units a year.

Definitely not one of those people that say that to lord it over others that do, I genuinely don’t like the taste of any alcohol that I’ve tried.

I rarely drink, but not because I think I'm virtuous and I'm not sure why this answer is seen as virtue signalling unless one is very defensive about what they drink.

I need to lose weight is part of the reason and I'd rather eat calories and sugar than drink it. Secondly I've only just stopped breastfeeding and cosleeping which obviously doesn't go with drinking.

When I go out and the kids are away overnight I drink to terrible excess. No idea of units. 5+ glasses of wine and several double vodka sodas. I have a weird there's no point unless I'm wasted mindset that is probably much less healthy than a couple of wines a night.

golddustwoman84 · 19/10/2018 20:28

I used to drink one bottle of wine a night, that then progressed to two.
Then a bag ( more eco friendly I told myself, but in reality it had just over two bottles worth).
At my worst was a litre of gin a night. Every night. Despite being a single mum to two.
I will be two years sober on New Year's Eve.
If you think it's a problem and are worried about it, then it more than likely is.

BakedBeans47 · 19/10/2018 20:30

Yeah I don’t get the “virtue signalling” comment either. I have/had a drink problem. I’m sorting it out. I don’t see how that’s “virtue signalling”.

golddust that’s fantastic. Well done.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 19/10/2018 20:31

Since starting my new job I'm practically crawling to the bar straight after work. Maybe two medium glasses a night, maybe 5 nights out of 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/10/2018 20:32

The ‘drink less’ app is really good, an easy way to track your habits. I set a limit of 14 units per week (which is the gov recommend max amount) and in the last 6 or so weeks I’ve had around 10-15 each week. It shows if you’ve exceeded the weekly amount but also if you exceed the daily amount (ie what they term binge drinking)

Dh and I both use it although he drinks more than me. We only drink at weekends though due to work, kids, sleep, activities etc.

ashtrayheart · 19/10/2018 20:36

A 100 units plus per week at one point. Nothing for over a year now, I have no idea how we used to afford my drinking habits !

Fishcakey · 19/10/2018 20:37

Too much I expect. Half a bottle on a Thursday. A bottle and a half on Friday, same on Saturday, probably a bottle on Sunday (wine not meths!).

golddustwoman84 · 19/10/2018 20:38

Thank you BakedBeans47 has been the best thing I've ever done for myself. Life is so much calmer now.

Crunchymum · 19/10/2018 20:41

Up to 3-4 bottles a week pre medication a decent 2 glasses most nights Shock now I drink nothing (medication is for an auto immune condition and not because I was such a booze hound Grin)

Donthugmeimscared · 19/10/2018 20:45

I drink nothing at home except for about 12 cups of tea. When I go out on the odd occasion I'm not driving and don't have the kids I drink far too much. The last time I got to go out was September 2017 so it's not often sadly.

BigStripeyBastard · 19/10/2018 20:51

Probably too much. Three bottles of wine a week maybe? I'm currently on Sober October and not missing it. Like the poster way above, it's more of a habit, I think. I give up entirely for (usually) February and October just to prove I can, more than anything.

whycantyouusethephone · 19/10/2018 20:54

I was on 100+ units a week pre September. Then I went 35 days without a drink. Now I'm sticking to 10-20 units a week. I had a serious problem and before giving up for the month I hadn't seen how much our society glamorises alcohol- wine o clock, celebrations, stress - pretty much anything can be used as a good excuse to drink. And those people who choose not to drink are often openly mocked, and accused of being boring, stick in the mud, virtue signalling, not normal etc.

I'm still a drinker but it was an eye opening experience to see it from the other side for a month.

Bluntness100 · 19/10/2018 20:56

I have no average. Some weeks I have a couple of glasses a night, other times I can go all week with none. It really depends on my mood. But it's getting less and less as I get older.

I had a glass on Monday night, and nothing since. I will probably drink tomorrow as going to movies with my husband then out for dinner. None tonight.

The Reason it's getting less and less is my tolerance to alcohol is dropping. I'm 49. I find even a glass disturbs my sleep, it's really pissing me off! 😔

KatesMott · 19/10/2018 20:58

@MawkishTwaddle Absolutely hilarious and so true! I drink about half a bottle of wine a night (share a bottle with DP), more on weekends. Try and some get two alcohol free days a week though doesnt always happen! I have a high threshold before I feel ‘drunk’- rarely drink to what feels like excess and many of my peers are the same though those with children less so now.

homebirds · 19/10/2018 21:02

I drink the same as you and so do loads of people - just not on mn!!! It's not ideal but there are also far worse.

BakedBeans47 · 19/10/2018 21:10

Yes this. I’ve read a lot of books and I see alcohol for what it is now. It’s so normalised in society. I’ve changed my ways for no other reason than my well-being and finally seeing that whatever I thought alcohol was giving me it was taking more away. I’d been struggling with guilt/denial for years before I finally faced it head on though.

3WildOnes · 19/10/2018 21:27

I’m surprised that some of you don’t know anyone who is tee total or barely drinks. In my friendship group 2 don’t drink at all and one barely drinks. I probably have a couple of small glasses a week and then maybe between 5 and 10 units on a night out once a week. Some of my friends drink more some less. I wonder if partly it’s a generation thing, amongst my parents friends who are in their 60s, most of them seem to drink wine every day.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/10/2018 21:32

I don't drink but I don;t class myself as TT because I use Amarretto in my Christmas cake and marzipan.
So the equivilant of licking a wine cork Wink

Accountant222 · 19/10/2018 21:40

Practically zero, I'm on methotrexate and the tiny amount you're allowed isn't worth having, I was incensed when told very little alcohol, so started smoking again, I've never been a good girl !

BrokenWing · 19/10/2018 21:42

I'll have a bottle of wine and 4-5 vodkas or bourbons through each week. A bit less at home and a lot more out if I'm going out and I'm not driving but that isn't often maybe once every month or two.

theboxofdelights · 19/10/2018 21:43

Max of one bottle of wine a week over a weekend.

GhoulTheFckToSpook · 19/10/2018 21:44

About half a glass of wine a night. I should measure it tomorrow and reply again...
