How much do you drink?

I drink far too much but just want to know what the average is? I'm currently averaging 3 glasses of wine a night and I feel so bad about it.

OP posts:

On the whole I don't particularly. I'll occasionally have a glass of wine with a roast dinner. Or a beer when we get a curry in.

Xmas is a bit different. A Hot orange and amaretto on cold nights. And snowballs but not every day

museumum · 19/10/2018 18:31

Depends on the size of your glass doesn’t it? I probably have a bottle to a bottle and a half a week which is just within limits.

Thesearmsofmine · 19/10/2018 18:32

I don’t drink much. Maybe every couple of weeks I’ll have a couple of g&t’s or glasses of wine. I used to be a huge binge drinker but went right off it once my dc came along.

I'll have a good few bevvies twice a week. More than 14 units and I'm OK with that. Like everyone else there are some things I do which is in accord with advice, and other things, like drinking, which I don't.

AlbertWinestein · 19/10/2018 18:35

Mawkish That’s one of my all time favourite responses!

Ime, the MNers who the most strongly profess to never drink are also the MNers that are having a fight at midnight —just before passing out—

AlbertWinestein · 19/10/2018 18:36

Seriously?! Why can I never strikeout?!!

Orlandointhewilderness · 19/10/2018 18:42

i think you have to do two dashes each end albert!
two bottles of wine over the weekend. one pint on a thursday night.

Bombardier25966 · 19/10/2018 18:42

I gave up drinking about five years ago. It used to make me "happy" too, but really it was a sticking plaster over the bad stuff in my life.

cravingcake · 19/10/2018 18:42

Honestly I was drinking a bottle a day (well evening). Sometimes more. I knew I needed to stop but just didn’t have the willpower. This amount was ‘normal’ for me and over the course of this entire year I don’t think I had a single day when I didn’t have a drink.

Then my DH was diagnosed with cancer and that was the wake up call we needed. We are both doing sober October, he is undergoing treatment currently so doesn’t feel like drinking at all. And I need to be able to look after him and our 2 DC.

I plan to reintroduce the odd drink as I do miss it, but massively reduced to a glass or 2 at the weekend or after a very stressful day

buddhasbelly · 19/10/2018 18:43

Don't drink at all. But then I'm a recovering alcoholic so that's kinda for the best!

I kind of think it's not about the quantity* you have but whether you feel you need the drink and obsess about it or can't stop once you've started.

*quantity going off the scale will obviously have significant health impacts.

JosellaPlayton · 19/10/2018 18:46

Don’t usually drink mid-week but on Wednesday DH and I shared a bottle of wine has we had some particularly awful paperwork to get through for our mortgage application! Tonight we have a baby sitter so that will probably be an aperitif or two, then sharing a bottle of wine with dinner. Tomorrow we likely won’t drink. Sunday we have brunch plans with friends so maybe a mimosa or two.

recall · 19/10/2018 18:48

A bottle of wine a night ...plus some cider.
It’s probably too much 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I do have 2-3 alcohol free nights a week ( on a good week )

MsNowtyBach · 19/10/2018 18:52

I'm trying to stick to three nights off a week and I do feel better for it.

I will have a couple of glasses on a weekday night and a couple more on a Friday or Saturday. I do like a glass of wine with my roast on a Sunday evening.

MissDai5y · 19/10/2018 18:52

I've had 2 gin and tonics and 2*1/2 bottles of kronenburg since dd was born 4 months ago.

The whole time I was pregnant I was gagging for a lager, despite not being a big drinker, once born, not really fussed again.

n0ne · 19/10/2018 18:57

It can vary massively but on an average week I have 1/3 of a bottle of wine, or a bottle of beer with dinner probably 4 nights in 7. In the summer it's a bit more (half a bottle of lovely chilled pinot gris or bubbles, a G&T here and there, or Aperol spritz, or Kir Royale). DH and I love a drink but don't go mental like we used to pre-kids. We probably exceed the recommended limits, but not by much.

HappyHippy45 · 19/10/2018 19:11

Usually far too much.
We have friends who drink so when we socialise with them our drinking is pretty normal.
When we socialise with occasional drinkers it's an effort not to drink our usual amount.
We know we have a problem and are working on cutting down severely....with the understanding if we can't do that then we have to quit completely.
It's far too easy to get into a habit of drinks every night. Some nights more than others.
We've just done 3 weeks of only drinking on a Friday and Saturday night. If there's any left on a Sunday it gets poured away.
I know when I have my much looked forward to drink tonight it won't be as good as I'd envisaged.

It's funny, I'm kind of amazed that people barely drink........just as they would be amazed disgusted at how much vodka I can put away!

MysweetAudrina · 19/10/2018 19:38

Never at home and usually only on a work night out but am thinking of knocking it on the head completely. I did give it up completely for about 12 years and looking back it was probably for the better.

I really don't think it matters what anyone else drinks it really only matters how it affects you and your nearest and dearest. If it is niggling at you then it probably means you need to take stock.

lljkk · 19/10/2018 19:41

I drink comfortably less than 3 glasses/week. I like alcohol, but only in small occasional doses.

adoggymama · 19/10/2018 19:44

Just had one lovely fancy gin and tonic in a hotel garden and I feel absolutely incapacitated now

huggybear · 19/10/2018 19:46

Nothing but when I would probably a glass of wine on a Saturday, maybe some gin.

bellalou1234 · 19/10/2018 19:47

Same as you op. After this weekend an going to stop Monday to Thursday

Pyjamaface · 19/10/2018 19:56

Only a few times a year. Last drink was August at a BBQ, before that was May/June on holiday and next time will probably be Christmas.

I don't like drinking at home and I'm generally too poor/working to go out. I have plenty of other bad habits to keep me going

MouseholeCat · 19/10/2018 20:05

Previously, I'd say I was drinking 2-3 glasses 3 times a week. I don't drink now, but OP wants to know what the average is and arguably non-drinkers are part of that at the population level.

I stopped because something about my pattern of drinking felt unhealthy. I only "counted" the 1 bottle of wine I bought with my weekly shop... the additional top ups were special circumstances: a stressful day, it's cold outside, celebrating a success, feeling anxious etc. There was usually at least 1 special circumstance in a week.

I said it was about enjoyment/taste, but I really liked the feeling of sinking into it and feeling numb to whatever was worrying me. I now know it made my anxiety and insomnia worse.

I'm not against drinking, but I do think if you're defensive, unsure or evasive over your drinking it's worth considering if it might be something to tackle.

LBOCS2 · 19/10/2018 20:17

I probably drink maybe two bottles of wine over the course of the week, and I have at least three days off a week - usually Sunday, Tuesday, Weds, but often Monday too.

We've not had any wine in this week, so I'm currently drinking a (single) G&T - I have a bar measure at home as I find it does help keep track of how much I'm drinking otherwise a drink made with a 'good slosh' can be a treble without realising. In a minute I'll open a bottle of wine which DH and I will share and we'll probably do similarly tomorrow night.

aroundnabout · 19/10/2018 20:18

I don't drink, maybe one or two glasses per year. Stopped when pregnant and not fussed anymore. I also am much more aware of the very real health risks and have a child to stay healthy for.
