Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason

I know this comes up fairly often but I feel like we've not had one for a while...

My top ones at present:

Cutesy/cosy phrases used about adults e.g. (spotted on MN) "why were they in the garden at 2am anyway? Surely they'd be tucked up in bed and fast asleep."

Being 'helped to' re. food/drink. e.g. "she helped herself to the last of the champagne"

"tucking in" re. food.

Tabloid favourite here "tipping the scale at".

What makes your brain itch?

Other half,hubby are all ghastly

LadyHooHa · 23/10/2018 23:14

Oh God. Hubby as well. And Hubs, and Hubster .

I think this could be categorised with anyone who calls their partner "babe", or similarly awful terms of apparent endearment.

Spanglylycra · 23/10/2018 23:15

"My bad" ARRRGHH said by my team whenever they screw up.

And not a phrase but the word"pamphlet" just why?!?! It gives me rage.

stitchinguru · 23/10/2018 23:29

No Shit, Sherlock

stitchinguru · 23/10/2018 23:31

Oh and.... ‘upcycling’...

WalkingTed · 24/10/2018 09:25

in any way, shape or form

flugelhorn81 · 27/10/2018 07:40

Ok, this isn't an irritating phrase exactly, but what drives me mad is when someone posts an opinion - typically on AIBU - and some sanctimonious poster says "why do you care what other people do?"/"how does it affect you?" Etc. Aren't people allowed to have an opinion?! Argh. Sorry - just seen an example and it's set me off!

WitchyMcWitchface · 27/10/2018 07:48

Pop.... often a pop of colour.
For me popping is what you do to balloons or a pus filled spot !! You squeeze it and it pops!

So that pop of colour is always creamy yellow pus coloured for me!!!!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 27/10/2018 07:55

Aks/ax instead of ask..

This is actually correct. It’s old English preserved through Jamaican English brought back into our language.

Besides it makes sense to use it. It’s shorter and easier to say. Bring back “aks” I say!

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 27/10/2018 08:10

Breg-sit

It's brexit. There's no g. I listen to radio 4 when I'm driving round at work and find myself clenching.

Peanutbutterjar · 27/10/2018 08:42

The education threads throw up a lot of annoying phrases...

Finding their tribe
Cohort
The shortening of course names, NatSci, Chem, Bio, EngLit etc

Also, referring to students doing an exam as a professional.. eg. “ good luck to the mathematicians today” when they are doing GCSE maths..

I’m also amazed at the amount of personal information shared on those threads, exam results, health issues, relationships. I would have been so annoyed if my parents did that. It’s so easy to find the children concerned when linked to other info shared on this website.

KittyMcKitty · 27/10/2018 08:45

Reaching out to you

Drives me mad - you’re just talking to someone!!!

lots33 · 27/10/2018 09:43

Laughing at all the pyjama ones - I say Jim jammy Joos to my children which is worse!

My pet hates are:
Pud
Veg
At the end of the day
End of ...( end of what?)
24/7

Razzlefrazzle · 27/10/2018 15:07

So many here that drive me mad. The ones that really test my patience -

Anything that has been "curated" such pretentious bollocks.

"Artisan" seems to be applied to almost anything on a menu. Wtf does it mean? Seems to be used as justification to inflate the price which is then quoted as x.5. What happened to £x.50?

The phrase that really grates is "out of sheer curiosity". Harmless enough but makes me want to scream!

flugelhorn81 · 27/10/2018 16:02

Oh yes, cohort is a good one!

Also, anyone that writes 'n' instead of 'and', as in 'fruit n veg' or 'fish n chips'

Avegemitesandwich · 27/10/2018 16:58

I hate 'veggies'.

Like, 'served with loads of veggies'.

I also hate 'crisp'. Crisp salad, crisp white shirt. No.

luckycat007 · 28/10/2018 01:19

The term 'uni' rather than university and 'bespoke'

owlshooting · 29/10/2018 20:48

Adorable, sweet and date night.

waterlego6064 · 29/10/2018 20:52

I know this is a popular phrase here on MN, but I really have had enough of ‘spidey senses’.

owlshooting · 29/10/2018 21:30

'Reached out' and 'Welcomed' so overused in the media and really sets my teeth on edge.

flugelhorn81 · 29/10/2018 21:41

Oh yes @waterlego - I'd never heard it before I came on here, it's awful.

waterlego6064 · 29/10/2018 23:37

Glad I’m not alone flugal! It sounds a bit childish and twee. 😬

PossibiliTea · 29/10/2018 23:49

Really irrational but i cringe so much when I hear “he/she is into everything” when referring to their baby/toddler.

It’s probably the only way to explain that but I just don’t like it!

DevilsAdvocados · 31/10/2018 11:56

a pop of colour.
crisp white shirt. No

On a similar theme,

teamed with for fashion journalists - as in " a blue blazer teamed with black jeans". Just no.

Journalists - if you delete the word teamed, the meaning stays the same which is a sure sign the word is pointless and your writing will improve no end. Given how ruthless sub-editors tend to be with spare verbiage how "teamed with" survives so often is beyond me.

a red lip or a black boot - anything used singular that should be in a blural form - again fashion.

Fashion journalist as a class should be taken in their crisp white shirts teamed with a black jean and a red lip for a pop of colour and shot for crimes against the English language.

DevilsAdvocados · 31/10/2018 11:56

*plural form.
