Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason

I know this comes up fairly often but I feel like we've not had one for a while...

My top ones at present:

Cutesy/cosy phrases used about adults e.g. (spotted on MN) "why were they in the garden at 2am anyway? Surely they'd be tucked up in bed and fast asleep."

Being 'helped to' re. food/drink. e.g. "she helped herself to the last of the champagne"

"tucking in" re. food.

Tabloid favourite here "tipping the scale at".

What makes your brain itch?

babyshark "it needs banned" should be banned! :-)

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/10/2018 01:53

Most things from the fashion world ie.

A tee
A trench
A clutch
A heel
A red lip
A smoky eye.

indigoprincess · 21/10/2018 02:56

"At the end of the day"

"brought" when they really mean "bought"

"playdate"- BOAK!!!

"blue sky thinking

"non-binary"- just say trans

"I'm not being racist/nasty/funny etc but....." - you just know what they are gonna say next is inevitably going to be racist/nasty/funny etc

"to be brutally honest"- no you are not, you are just nasty

Beccaydwi · 21/10/2018 08:10

Team - as in I'm going to team these jeans with a silver top.
Any mention of looking at 'property' . It's a house/flat/mansion not bloody property!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 21/10/2018 09:11

T'internet, interweb, t'interweb. Funny for about 5 minutes in 2002.

MargaretDribble · 21/10/2018 09:44

Maccy D's

dementedma · 21/10/2018 09:45

agree with hot choc and choc - only ever see it on MN

ShotsFired · 21/10/2018 09:50

"spa day" for the hideous twee and smug MN-y connotations it has

"mint" as a way of describing something really good. Also "lush".

emmylousings · 21/10/2018 10:25

"It does what is says on the can" - makes me want to punch someone.

"We / I / the X party have been very clear" - beloved of politicians - who have not been clear at all....

HomerDancing · 21/10/2018 10:58

Yourself / myself instead of you / me - do people think they are being really clever by saying these ?!

Horrendous!

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 21/10/2018 11:04

I've just read the full thread and can't believe no one has yet mentioned 'throwing X under the bus' e.g. 'throwing women and girls under the bus' when discussing the GRA reforms. I just keep getting an image of someone holding a child's arms and legs and flinging them under an approaching double decker. I know that's the metaphorical point being made but it's the mental image that pops up every time!

NannyKasey · 21/10/2018 11:38

"mint" as a way of describing something really good. Also "lush".

You would hate living in Bristol as we say "mint" and "lush" a lot often with 'gert' in front of it Grin

CryingOverSpiltMilk · 21/10/2018 11:41

'Full time mum/mummy' < we all are but some are SAHMs, some work which is fine

'Fast forward to now' < rife on MN, never used this phrase and never heard anyone say it IRL but it irritates me.

'Stepping out' usually followed by 'for the first time since...' or a description of their outfit in tabloids. It just means someone has gone outside and used their legs to walk where there's a complete non article. I step out every bloody day.

LavendarGreen · 21/10/2018 11:56

LOL at the post by @fitgirl26 ...

Agree with them all, especially the facebook posts with 20 hashtags!

Here's 'a pic of hubster and baby bear.'

#lovethemforlife #hubbyandson, #cute #radiant #perfectchild #perfectson #loveyoubothsomuch #mylovesmylife #iwoulddiewithouyouboth, loveyoutothemoonandback #bestthingthateverhappenedtome, #blessing #beautifulchild #besthusband #nobodyknowstheloveweshare #bestmarriageintheworld #bestboobooboy

VOM VOM VOM!

There are three women who I have had to unfollow on facebook. For different reasons. One posts pics every day of her 2 kids, (around 8 and 10,) and calls them perfect daughter and perfect son, and calls her husband 'himself.'

Every day she tells us all how amazing and beautiful and wonderful her daughter and son are, how much their teachers love them, how they are always top of the class, how everyone tells them how beautiful their kids are yada yada.... Oddly, she never has a good thing to say about her husband LOL! Always berating him and saying he is lazy and useless.(He doesn't have facebook.)

The second woman is married with 2 kids, aged 7 and 5, and she posts constantly about how wonderful they are, and how amazing her man is. She posts pics of her husband working out, and says 'my amazing hubby! 'Look how gorgeous he is!' #iamsolucky #makingyoujealous #amazingman #bestdad blah blah blah. She seriously thinks all women are jealous that she 'has him.' He is 5 ft 5 and looks like a gnome. I shit U not.

Then there is ANOTHER woman I know who is constantly posting pics of her breastfeeding her kids. Now I have no issue with that, or women doing it in public. But she posts pics 3 or 4 times a week (of her breastfeeding her kids.) They are a 3 y.o. girl and a 4 and a half y.o. boy. She posts pics of her breastfeeding them both, on social media several times a week!

Firstly, I don't know what she is trying to prove, and secondly, it's weird. These kids will grow up soon, and become teenagers and so on, and these pics will be out there on the internet.

I just think something like this should not be photographed and shared online with her 1577 'friends' - most of who she has never met in real life, and does not know!

LoisEinhorn · 21/10/2018 12:01

Just banter
Cuz

LavendarGreen · 21/10/2018 12:14

Urgh, I hate it too when people call their cousin 'CUZ,' ... just call them by their bloody name! Hmm

DevilsAdvocados · 21/10/2018 12:55

“With this one”

This reminds me I can't bear the girl as a way to refer to a woman known to the person in a dismissive way as in I only met the girl once or I'm only dating the girl we aren't engaged

Made In Chelsea men are past masters of using this phrase and no woman should speak to them.

Sweetpea55 · 21/10/2018 14:33

'Touch Base
'Mind Set'
Gob Smacked'
'Very Much So'

Wauden · 21/10/2018 14:42

'It does what it says on the tin'. Also the character in the tv ad was obviously a bully.

Swishful · 21/10/2018 14:58

Nom nom
'Twas/ 'Tis

As in ''twas very busy...' (it was)

Choc/ pud

Veggie

Haha a lot of ones that people have said above really Smile

AlphaJuno · 21/10/2018 15:01

'From the get-go'!

AlphaJuno · 21/10/2018 15:03

And 'literally' when it isn't literal atall. Eg on a hot day.. saying something like 'it's literally 200 degrees out there!' No it's not!!!

yourma555 · 21/10/2018 16:08

"Living my best life"
"Drinky poos"
"Girlies"
"Haters going to hate"
"Cheeky Nandos"
"Come round, have a BREW" despise that word!!!!!
People who write "going to snuggle down"
"Me and my hubby" just say husband, the word hubby gives me the shivers

InertPotato · 21/10/2018 16:12

I hate the phrase 'going out for a meal'. Terribly common. Wink
