Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason

I know this comes up fairly often but I feel like we've not had one for a while...

My top ones at present:

Cutesy/cosy phrases used about adults e.g. (spotted on MN) "why were they in the garden at 2am anyway? Surely they'd be tucked up in bed and fast asleep."

Being 'helped to' re. food/drink. e.g. "she helped herself to the last of the champagne"

"tucking in" re. food.

Tabloid favourite here "tipping the scale at".

What makes your brain itch?

“Cleansing “. Too many connotations of early-‘90s Balkans. What happened to “Having a wash”?

And people sounding like they’v internalised marketing speech. We had a whip-round for my boss & his wife when they hhad a baby: “Here are some gifts.” (Oh yes, and for “your wife “ it was mainly Body Shop “smellies “ - not what I’d want near my bits after a difficult labour.)

My ex had a habit of pronouncing prices like furniture ad voiceovers, eg instead of saying “it’s 499 pounds”, he’d say “It’s 4-9-9.” Just as well we didn’t make many significant purchases together.😂

The words "sick, lush, so basically..." I can't stand them!

Steala · 20/10/2018 17:35

X-post, babyroob (slow typing). We obviously hate the same phrase for the same reason!!

Heatherjayne1972 · 20/10/2018 17:42

The word ‘fact’ used to emphasise a point

The grass is green ....Fact

Just so unnecessary

namastayinbed · 20/10/2018 17:55

lil instead of little, especially when used by Millennials on Insta.

'got you' for 'I understand'

And everything else on this thread.

pinnerpearl · 20/10/2018 18:05

Pulled - as in pulled pork, with glazed bbq sauce served in a soft buttery brioche bun.

Shredded is ok , pulled is not.

Happyinheels · 20/10/2018 18:25
  • I'm not even lying (DD's favourite phrase right now!)
  • U OK Hun?
  • Hun/Hon
  • Chop Chop (patronising)
  • Our Lass/Our Lad (eurgh! Colloquialism for one's 'partner' 😂😂😂)
  • I swear down...
  • You're joking aren't 'cha?!
MaureenMLove · 20/10/2018 18:29

I can't stand being called a star at work. I know people say is because they appreciate my help, but I'm not 5 and I'd rather you just said, 'thanks, I appreciate your help!'

Steala · 20/10/2018 18:46

"Goodness" in a good context "scrape all the goodness out of the pan", "make sure you eat all the goodness". It makes me feel uncomfortable and I don't understand why.

flowerpot1000000 · 20/10/2018 19:08

"Burgeoning" baby bump...a Daily Fail fave

flowerpot1000000 · 20/10/2018 19:09

Bananamam4 · 20/10/2018 19:14

Bananamam4 · 20/10/2018 19:18

VioletPickles · 20/10/2018 19:22

nom nom nom. Hate, Hate, Hate it.

Wornout8 · 20/10/2018 19:49

'The gift that keeps on giving' hate it!

DammitOedipus · 20/10/2018 20:52

"I fell pregnant" - You didn't trip and have it suddenly appear. You GOT pregnant or BECAME pregnant.
"Living space" - Not sure why, I just hate it.
"I have mental health" - Problems! Mental health problems!
"I were there/You was there" - Just no.

DammitOedipus · 20/10/2018 20:53

Also "spag bol", "biccies" and "chocs".

mimibunz · 20/10/2018 20:55

For external use only.

Usually found on hair dryers.....

SylvesterTheCat · 20/10/2018 20:56

"Why not try..."

and

"Happy Hump Day!"

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 20/10/2018 21:12

The thing I don't get about 'fall pregnant' is that it obviously stems from such old-fashioned attitudes, yet seems to have enjoyed a resurgence, if MN is anything to go by.

Dislike 'family time', largely because of the self-congratulatory vibe it gives off. And 'duvet day'/'mental health day'.

Also not keen on 'holiday' as a verb, even though it's evidently the U phrasing.

HarveyNickNacks · 20/10/2018 21:33

Yeah. Want gone/need gone. Usually with less than a day's notice. To take away some pile of shite that nobody wants. Take it to the tip yourself.

Oh and 'I need the most amazing cake that not even a Bake Off finalist could deliver within the next 24 hours. Message me!' Cos I'm too fucking lazy to book a cake 4 weeks in advance of the event.

PinkAvocado · 20/10/2018 21:48

I agree with so many pps. I really hate ‘gifted’ as a verb.

BabySharkDooDooDooDoo · 20/10/2018 21:50

Nom nom nom is a horrid phrase it needs banned lol

bitchwitch · 21/10/2018 00:18

FrankensteinsKnuckleDuster · 21/10/2018 00:27
