Looking for a song for Mum’s funeral.

Hi, my mum died quite suddenly and I’m devastated. We have never really discussed funeral arrangements with her. She loved nature; was always outdoors. She wasn’t given to great displays of emotion, but we knew, iyswim?

I’m looking for a non-religious song for her funeral. We already have Albatross, plus a favourite song which wasn’t about nature.

I’m thinking of something slightly folky, with a gentle feel, if possible. Can you help?

Sorry about your mum.

How about Those Were The Days by Mary Hopkins? That's what sprung to mind.

FancyForgetting · 13/10/2018 10:39

I’m really sorry for your loss.

How about Forever Autumn by The Moody Blues? The lyrics are about the loss of a loved one and reference birds and this time of year and I think it fits the folksy and gentle feel you are looking for.

Take care of yourself.

luluskiptotheloo · 13/10/2018 10:41

How about sunshine on my shoulders by John Denver? It’s lovely.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/10/2018 10:41

We'll meet again

pontefractals · 13/10/2018 10:42

Maybe Ewan McColl's Joy of Living?
Sympathies, losing a parent is hard.

Jillcrewespony · 13/10/2018 10:42

Sorry for your loss. How about Who knows where the time goes by Fairport Convention? Folly, gentle and moving.

Jillcrewespony · 13/10/2018 10:42

*folky

HollowTalk · 13/10/2018 10:43

Oh that's so sad. I'm so sorry. Flowers

How old was your mum? What was the music of her youth?

TheChatsPyjamas · 13/10/2018 10:43

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Maybe Autumn leaves by paulo nutini, or the cover by a woman.

If she loved nature, what about a track of beautiful birdsong while everyone enters?

WingMirrorSpider · 13/10/2018 10:44

Days by The Kinks (although I prefer the Kirsty Macoll version which is more folky).

The words are just lovely and very appropriate I think.

Thank you for the days
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me
I'm thinking of the days
I won't forget a single day, believe me
I bless the light
I bless the light that lights on you believe me
And though you're gone
You're with me every single day, believe me
Days I'll remember all my life
Days when you can't see wrong from right
You took my life
But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me
But it's all right
Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me
I wish today could be tomorrow
The night is dark
It just brings sorrow, let it wait
Thank you for the days
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me
I'm thinking of the days
I won't forget a single day, believe me

So sorry for the loss of your mum Flowers

I’m sorry for your loss.
At our baby daughters funeral we had elsyium from gladiator - the tune that plays as he walks through the fields to meet his family again. We were the same in that we didn’t want anything religious, but this seemed to be fitting.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 13/10/2018 10:44

Days by Kirsty MacColl or the Kinks?

I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers

longtompot · 13/10/2018 10:45

I'm sorry to hear your sad news Flowers What about Songbird?

NWQM · 13/10/2018 10:45

So sorry for your loss. It’s such a difficult choice but we have just had to organise my Mum’s funeral and it was very cathartic to listen to music. I think the right song will come to you almost if you let it. Are their younger children going? Might be good to ask them so that they get something they can relate to. There are some lovely songs sung by my children at school that aren’t religious.

Atalune · 13/10/2018 10:45

Very very sorry to hear about your mum. Mine passed in similar circumstances.....

If you like classical music what about

The Lark Ascending By Vaughn Williams

Or perhaps look/listen to Kate rusby, this is the kit, Crosby stills Nash and young, some early van Morrison?

We chose all pop songs for my mum, and the lark ascending for the reflection/contemplation. It’s very beautiful.

I know it's from a film, but I like The Last Goodbye sung by Billy Boyd.

GooseberryJam · 13/10/2018 10:55

Days is a great suggestion. Fields of Gold by Sting?
Flowers for you - also lost my mum suddenly some months ago.

IndigoSpritz · 13/10/2018 10:59

Meet On The Ledge by Fairport Convention

The Birds Are Leaving by Boo Hewerdine

reallybadidea · 13/10/2018 11:02

Annie's Song by John Denver came to mind.

Sorry for your loss, it must be a terrible shock to be suddenly planning a funeral.

LunaMay · 13/10/2018 11:03

Some lovely suggestions here already especially Kirsty McColl.
What about "We'll gather lilacs in the spring"? It's very gentle and calm with lovely words and a positive feeling at the end.

Kindest thoughts to you.
