Looking for a song for Mum’s funeral.

Hi, my mum died quite suddenly and I’m devastated. We have never really discussed funeral arrangements with her. She loved nature; was always outdoors. She wasn’t given to great displays of emotion, but we knew, iyswim?

I’m looking for a non-religious song for her funeral. We already have Albatross, plus a favourite song which wasn’t about nature.

I’m thinking of something slightly folky, with a gentle feel, if possible. Can you help?

Is gentle and folksy..can’t believe it was recrdered in 1990

what about this
ginnybag · 13/10/2018 13:28

Its very folky and very soft, about life as a journey and how we give our simple dreams to others to carry forward through winding country lanes

I love When I'm Gone by Phil Ochs but if you want gentle folk, try the Thea Gilmore version.

I'm sorry. What a terrible shock.

Shine by David Grey

How about "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her" by Simon & Garfunkel. Melody is massively evocative and it talks about nature.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Mum Flowers
I know you’ve already chosen a Fleetwood Mac song but Songbird is so beautiful and uplifting (Eva Cassidy’s cover is lovely too)
Sadder but equally beautiful is October Winds by Cara Dillon. I think she wrote it after her father died.

Golden Slumbers is another lovely song. I prefer the Beatles’ version but there are some lovely covers (I like Ben Folds’ version).

I hope you find the right song for your lovely Mum Xx

We had Lennon and McCartney's In My Life sung by Judy Collins at my Mums funeral. It still makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye simultaneously. Mum died 3 years ago and I feel she's still with me everyday.

Peter Gabriel, "That'll Do."

dentydown · 13/10/2018 15:36

Lighter shade of pale was played at my mums funeral.
We also had a poem read “you can shed tears” by David harkens.

iknowimcoming · 13/10/2018 15:47

So sorry about your mum Flowers

If she was a Fleetwood Mac fan, how about Gypsy? Or Landslide?

MollyHuaCha · 13/10/2018 16:38

I'm so sorry for your loss. When my mum died we played a Sinead O'connor song called The Funeral. It's in Irish though so not sure if that suits.

NorthernRunner · 13/10/2018 17:30

Fields of Gold? We had that at my dads funeral x

Paddybare · 13/10/2018 17:35

So sorry about your mum Flowers

I'm so sorry for your loss.

We had seasons in the sun sung by my dad's favourite singer. It was a song he loved anyway but the words seemed appropriate

Nutgirl · 13/10/2018 19:19

So sorry to hear about your Mum. How about The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell? It's a beautiful song about how the seasons come and go and life moves on but we're a just part of this big turning circle. It's a really comforting message. I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell with my mum and will be playing this at her funeral. Xx

Babybearsporij · 13/10/2018 21:02

Sticking with Simon & Garfunkel, how about "Bookends"?

A time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago it must be
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They're all that's left you

I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers
Eva Cassidy has a beautiful, folksy voice and I think Songbird or Fields of Gold would fit the bill
