Horrified by phone/wifi bill - how much do you pay?

OK admission: I am crap and never check my bills. But today I did and I am paying BT £141 for a month of fast broadband and phone calls.

It roughly splits as £52 for internet and £82 for phone calls from our landline. These calls are not extreme - we are out all day and call eg our parents at night, and maybe a couple of short mobile calls every day.

82 quid is a bit extreme for a month's landline use, isn't it?

Or is this normal?

What do you all pay?

BT - £45 pcm - which comprises
Advanced Line Rental
Infinity Broadband which is now Superfast BB1
Anytime Calls (This is worth paying for especially when you're put in a call centre queue!)
We still use our landline - it's essential if you're wfh most of the time. The bill is complicated though - you retain your negotiated discounts but there are still price increases during your contracted term. Plus, you have to go through the rigmarole of "negotiating" terms with the retentions team every time you renew just to keep the price down.

Everyone is paying a lot.

I have standard broadband and evening and weekend calls with sky for £10 a month includes landline.

I have no idea why anyone would pay for faster broadband.

Womaningreen · 11/10/2018 11:21

OP how on earth did that happen? What's the breakdown of the bills?

Cantarese · 11/10/2018 12:05

I have no idea why anyone would pay for faster broadband.
We pay for faster, we game lots, stream lots and big uploads to YouTube and lots of downloads too, gets the uploads/dl done quicker and no stuttering for movies or gaming.

specialsubject · 11/10/2018 12:13

£10 is impressive ! How long does that offer last?

JohnnyCrowsGarden · 11/10/2018 15:01

I noticed my phone bill was creeping up. Also London Zone 2 with very poor reception inside the home.
We were paying £34 per month for unlimited 40mb fibre with Plusnet but then were being charged loads for the calls (sometimes work from home and need to call mobiles.
So I called Plusnet and renegotiated a deal for £34 for unlimited fibre, unlimited landline calls and 2000 minutes a month to mobiles.

MyGuideJools · 11/10/2018 15:13

£115 month for
unlimited super fast Hmm broadband
unlimited land line calls
X large TV package
Sky sports package

snowbear66 · 11/10/2018 15:19

I pay £33 a month for sky superfast broadband and landline.
£8.99 a month for Netflix
£20 a month (2 seperate £10 rolling contracts) for me & my son 30 gig of data per month & unlimited calls & free calls to Europe Vectone mobile (customer service is crap but if you can put up with that it is a great deal).

EK36 · 11/10/2018 16:16

Our internet and phonecalls are under £50 per month.

specialsubject · 11/10/2018 16:30

the main lesson is that if you do use that terrible 'ol primitive landline Grin NEVER use it for chargeable calls. Call only in your inclusive hours or you will get massively overcharged.

last time I checked, four or five calls a month cost more than the anytime charge which is £8-£9 a month. And if you use Sky, Plusnet and others (NOT BT) then calls to mobiles are included. 0345 and 0370 should be included, if not go to saynoto0870 to find the geographic equivalent.

inclusive calls last up to an hour, if you are a big chatter keep an eye on the clock and redial at 59 minutes.

your provider isn't going to tell you this because it is easy money.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 11/10/2018 16:35

Currently with sky and have phone, internet and tv (mid range tv package with box sets) and pay £51 a month - got a good deal when I switched from BT. Bt we had phone, internet and basic tv package (not much better than freeview) and I was paying about £100 a month.

Twistedinknots · 11/10/2018 17:04

I saw a cheaper deal online and told them I was annoyed at being overcharged. They beat the other provider to retain custom.

The MSE website has lots of good advice.

I watch films online without a problem with standard broadband, I don't have a TV package though.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 11/10/2018 17:08

Sky, internet and phone is £35 all in. Never over as all calls are included even to mobiles and internet is unlimited. We can't get fibre though as we live in a valley in the countryside!

Givemeallyourcucumber · 11/10/2018 17:08

Sorry that should be we are with sky as an internet and service provider. We don't have sky TV.

bigbluebus · 11/10/2018 17:18

special subject you are so right. We used to have anytime calls but switched to evening and weekend in the last negotiations. It took me a few phone bills to realise I needed to get out of the habit of picking up the landline in the daytime - when I could use my mobile for free! The cist of landline calls in ridiculous.

We pay around £55pm to BT for unlimited fibre broadband and weekend and evening free calls. Don't know exact amount as DD includes DS's moble phone contract as well.

BT are very good at ripping you off at the end of a contract period - you really need to be on the ball with them both for landline contracts and mobile phone contracts.

thismummydrinksgin · 11/10/2018 17:21

£32 with virgin for tv broad band and phone x

wonderandwander · 11/10/2018 17:35

I think I have a cracking deal

Sky tv
Sky cinema
Unlimited free calls
Superfast fast broadband

£50 a month

MrsJBaptiste · 11/10/2018 20:56

I'm another that's really surprised at the amount of people on here that still use a landline. I really know very few people who use one now, we got rid of our as we were so fed up of all the bloody PPI calls we were getting!

specialsubject · 11/10/2018 22:24

Mobile coverage is not universal and is never reliable.

A call blocker and the tps did the trick on our landline - all numbers are recycled and it was an ex business number. Blocker means the Bangalore crooks can't even make it ring and the odd British one can never call again.

And it doesn't need charging and works in a power cut.

specialsubject · 11/10/2018 22:26

I do have a small mobile for contactability, but of course can't do anything useful or have a chat outside the house. The.former is.impossible and the latter antisocial . Call me when I get home.

Autumnrocks · 11/10/2018 23:02

MrsJBaptiste Perhaps you've noticed that some of us, even in towns and cities, have very poor mobile reception so we won't be getting rid of the landline. I don't know why that's so surprising.

Luvly12 · 11/10/2018 23:25

The Bangalore crooks GrinGrinGrin

Givemeallyourcucumber · 13/10/2018 18:40

We get no signal at home or around our village so a land line is essential. Also DH doesn't own a mobile phone so again LandLine is essential still!

To be honest I thought everyone still used a land line!
