Horrified by phone/wifi bill - how much do you pay?

OK admission: I am crap and never check my bills. But today I did and I am paying BT £141 for a month of fast broadband and phone calls.

It roughly splits as £52 for internet and £82 for phone calls from our landline. These calls are not extreme - we are out all day and call eg our parents at night, and maybe a couple of short mobile calls every day.

82 quid is a bit extreme for a month's landline use, isn't it?

Or is this normal?

What do you all pay?

Ok thanks all. I will ring BT tomorrow.

We live in London but have v poor mobile reception at home hence landline use.

Wish we could get Virgin but last time I checked they didn't cover us (zone 2 v close to zone 1 - ridiculous!)

Thanks all for context - much appreciated.

You must have more money than sense if you didn’t notice you were wasting all that money for nothing. I pay about £24 a month for my phone line and fibre. I make virtually no calls from my home phone as I use my mobile to make free calls. I don’t make that many calls these days so I pay £3 a month for my mobile SIM card through my phone and internet provider which gives me unlimited texts and something like 100 mins a month of calls and some internet. I’ve never gone over my allowance.

JeezYouLoon · 07/10/2018 23:02

About £80 per month with BT, however that includes
TV/pause, record etc/Netflix
Line rental
Unlimited calls
Unlimited broadband
3 mobile SIMS with unlimited calls and text and 10GB of date each per month!
I do ring every year though to make sure I'm on the best package possible.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/10/2018 23:03

Don't ring bt until you've been on moneysavingexpert and compared prices

Haberpop · 07/10/2018 23:06

BT £65 a month. Landline + a few calls, broadband that is slower than a snail's pace and 2 mobiles, both 6GB data, unlimited texts and calls (can't use them to make calls from home though as no signal).

Whitelisbon · 07/10/2018 23:08

We pay £37/month to Vodafone.
That's fibre broadband, line rental, and free anytime calls to landlines and mobiles.
We have no mobile reception within a few miles, so a landline is essential.

Nightwatch999 · 07/10/2018 23:08

Blooming heck OP! I pay £25 for Phone and Broadband through John Lewis!

Bluejeanz · 07/10/2018 23:27

Wow! That is extortionate. We switched from BT to EE - £32 per month for fibre and unlimited calls. Shop around before you call BT because they will jist sell you a cheaper (but still over proced) package and lock you in for another two years.

safariboot · 08/10/2018 01:53

Shock You're getting ripped off big time.

I pay £21 a month for line rental and fibre broadband (about 40 meg down) with Plusnet. Even before I negotiated that rate it was £34. No calls plan because we never make a call from the landline.

And £10 a month on o2 payg gets me my minutes texts and a bit of data (not much). Plus under a fiver usually for calls not covered.

Yonijust · 08/10/2018 06:28

Would changing mobile phone provider help? Are you on 4G?

You could get rid of your landline alltogether.

Fairylea · 08/10/2018 06:31

Wow! Shock

We pay £28 with plusnet for broadband, line rental and anytime calls. We live in the middle of the sticks in Norfolk- we still get 4G mobile as well! I am amazed that you don’t where you are in London!

BehemothPullsThePeasantsPlough · 08/10/2018 06:50

I also live in London but have dodgy mobile reception at home, so use the landline a lot. We noticed that the phone bill was pretty high (not as high as yours) and it was the landline to mobile calls that were doing it. We now make an effort to call mobiles from mobiles, or text, Skype or WhatsApp phone call. And we have an all in one free calls package for landline to landline calls.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/10/2018 06:55

I've just moved. I'm going to.ditch my.landline as I'm in the sticks and can't get internet & phone on adsl line.
4g wifi router about 40 euros pcm
Mobile unlimited calls 20 euros
Humax freesat box; free.
Netflix euros (so no need for sky with that & satellite )
Use viber, WhatsApp, facetime and messenger for calling most people.

adaline · 08/10/2018 07:00

£25.99 to Sky for broadband and landline. The only person who rings on our landline is my MIL!

We were with BT and their service is appalling. Engineering works cut our connection and we had no internet or phone for nearly a fortnight. I didn't get a refund even though both DH and I had to miss work to wait in for engineers that never showed up.

We switched to SKY.

MaverickSnoopy · 08/10/2018 07:01

Definitely try and get something cheaper.

EE £22
Line rental
Unlimited internet
Anytime calls

NoWordForFluffy · 08/10/2018 07:18

You need a phone provider which includes WiFi calling as you will then use the internet to make calls if you don't have enough phone signal (via your mobile).

You're paying WAY too much.

EscapeToTheMoon · 08/10/2018 07:20

We pay about £140 for 3 months with BT. Landline/calls(rarely any calls)/fibre broadband still in contract as its very new. Only we have to pay 3 months advance as I refuse to do DD with them. They mucked about with my dad’s monthly payment and he was paying ridiculously high amounts and he lived alone. Took the ombudsman to get a refund and correct monthly payments.

But once the contract cones to an end i willmove to SKY to get everything.

NoSquirrels · 08/10/2018 07:35

One of the reasons we’re with EE is because of poor mobile reception on other networks, and WiFi calling in the house so mobiles always work off the WiFi.

You need to do a bit of analysing of your bill and your usage pattern, and think about what you really need, and then you can tailor your package to what you need.

BackforGood · 08/10/2018 20:17

Thanks for the link to MoneySavingExpert's page, SuperLoud.
Looking through though, it does strike me how low the broadband is in most of those deals. 10 or 11 Mb in most of them. I can't see that working in a house where 4 or 5 people are using the internet though. Does it ?
Anyone?

Exexexcel · 08/10/2018 20:20

We're with bt and no one's allowed to use the home phone cos the calls cost so bloody much!

Gammeldragz · 08/10/2018 20:24

£33 to Vodafone for unlimited fibre broadband, line rental and my mobile. I don't make landline calls as we never use all our free minutes.

MismatchedStripySocks · 09/10/2018 07:45

£32pcm for broadband, phone and basic tv. That’s with virgin.

CaMePlaitPas · 09/10/2018 07:52

I pay 8euro for TV, Internet and landline - this includes free calls to about 30 countries. I am shocked it's so expensive in the UK.

Furrycushion · 09/10/2018 07:56

£35/month to BT for fast broadband, BT sport on devices but not TV (?), not sure what calls are included as we don't use the landline. £10-12 Giffgaff for mobiles. Use the internet for calls if you don't have good phone reception, although if it's to parents they may be resistant! Most people have WhatsApp these days though
