Horrified by phone/wifi bill - how much do you pay?

Growingboys · 07/10/2018 19:46

OK admission: I am crap and never check my bills. But today I did and I am paying BT £141 for a month of fast broadband and phone calls.

It roughly splits as £52 for internet and £82 for phone calls from our landline. These calls are not extreme - we are out all day and call eg our parents at night, and maybe a couple of short mobile calls every day.

82 quid is a bit extreme for a month's landline use, isn't it?

Or is this normal?

What do you all pay?

I pay £59 a month with sky which is tv, broadband and calls x

specialsubject · 09/10/2018 09:52

Unlimited anytime calls from a landline are £9 a month - just re dial if you.want to talk for more than an hour. Paying per call is really foolish. As are the screams of ' get rid of the la ndline'

Leave bt for Plusnet or sky and you can also have calls to.mobiles included in that, although the reception.and call quality will still be shit because mobiles are.

Excuse typos, website aimed at women and so really badly coded.

specialsubject · 09/10/2018 09:53

Oh yes, full package of.broadband, line rental and unlimited calls should be well under £30 if you leave bt.

JeffreyNeedsAHobby · 09/10/2018 09:56

I am with BT and the cheeky buggers put mine up from £48 to £114pm Shock. I was on holiday when the first amount came through and when I got back was told that my old contract had "run out" so I had been put on a "faster" package. There was no difference in what I received at all. They certainly couldn't explain why the huge price difference. I'm now tied back in for 2 years at £48 with 3 weeks before the end date marked across a whole week to remind me to call them and ensure I don't get put back onto an imaginary "faster" package. Con artists, the lot of them.

merlotmummy14 · 09/10/2018 15:51

Do you make calls internationally? Our landline costs about £40 a month and that's with an international calls special deal package.

Autumnrocks · 09/10/2018 17:39

Some of us have really terrible mobile reception, and I don't even live rurally. And it doesn't seem to make any difference which provider.
I don't always feel like going to the end of the garden to make a call, so I need a landline, though it's used as little as possible..

PattiStanger · 09/10/2018 17:46

The poster who doesn't know anyone with a landline must have a tiny circle of friends, everyone I know has one.

Are there really places in London where mobiles don't work? As others have said you really need to be finding another way to call people, you're spending a ridiculous amount on calls. Assuming the people you are calling so have mobile minutes can you not ask them to ring you instead?

EscapeToTheMoon · 09/10/2018 19:23

Im rural and have to go outside to get a mobile signal. I can drive to the next village and get loads of texts from the Teachers2Parents system. Luckily i get them on the app beforehand.

I have land and i need to enquire how to obtain a mast on it to boost signal.

Asdf12345 · 09/10/2018 19:27

I'm not entirely sure as the better halfs employer pays for it, but I think is works out at about £25 a month that is regarded as liable for benefit in kind taxation.

LoopyLemonade · 09/10/2018 19:47

£25 on Vodafone unlimited. No landline just broadband or something I'm not sure, husband does all this.

specialsubject · 09/10/2018 20:20

Plusnet price Inc line rental

£19 a month for.standard broadband
£24 if you want fibre

Plus £8 a.month for unlimited anytime calls including 2000 minutes to mobiles (who would want to shout to a crap mobile connection that much?)

Others are available. Stop pissing money !

( Joke is Plusnet are part of bt)

chickywoo · 09/10/2018 20:29

£20 a month for line rental and fibre with Vodafone no inclusive calls with this as we never use landline but I think there is option to have call package added.
£20 each for mobile for dh and me with unlimited calls, texts and 20gb data, also Vodafone

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/10/2018 20:31

We pay about £60 all in but nothing for calls. We have free minutes for mobile to mobile calls and landline calls are free.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 09/10/2018 21:12

I pay Now £25 per month for unlimited Fibre broadband
No landline
Mobile phone I pay £15 per month to Giffgaff for unlimited texts and calls to all UK numbers and 8GB data.

You'd be much better off ditching the landline and using the minutes on your mobile phone tbh - there are special packages available if you're phoning abroad a lot

ny20005 · 09/10/2018 21:22

Way too expensive 😱

I pay about £50 a month to sky & thats for line rental, all local & international calls & fibre broadband

AnnieAnoniMouse · 09/10/2018 21:26

I was feeling pissed off with Talk talk at £45pm.

Broadband, anytime calls UK & international calls to something like like 25 countries, covers everywhere I call.

GiffGaff for mobile £10pm. Can’t remember the details but more than I use.

Tv. TiVo - ummm. £27 a month maybe...?

Justbackfromnewwine · 09/10/2018 21:36

Wow that’s reall expensive OP. We pay £35-40pm (depending on calls) for internet (unlimited data), and phone with a few calls. We use freesat for telly.

theworldistoosmall · 09/10/2018 21:49

Change mobile provider. Some are shockingly bad. I had giffgaff as a working number and the number of black spots even in zone one when my other provider had full bars was shocking. I just ordered free sim cards from providers, topped up a tenner and tried the providers that way. The coverage maps I found weren't accurate.

I pay £40 for unlimited wifi, line and all channels apart from movies and sport, have multiroom, skygo and boxsets. I got this after I phoned up to cancel because I was getting shafted. As a new customer, I could have a similar package for £48 a month. Some of the extras are because I'm also a vip for what it's worth.

theworldistoosmall · 09/10/2018 21:52

Mobiles both with 3.
£12 a month. Unlimited calls and text and 14gb of data. Last year they had a sim only deal got the first one, when I needed a new number I asked them why I could have that deal again haha. Plus they also have the London underground wifi thing!

Growingboys · 09/10/2018 21:57

Thanks so much all. I called BT and have got it down to a third of that.

Really appreciate all your advice. X

Growingboys · 09/10/2018 21:58

Ps we have to have a landline as crap mobile reception where we live (London. I know).

OP posts:
Wallywobbles · 09/10/2018 22:09

65€ for 4 mobile contracts and 40€ ish for the box and landline.

specialsubject · 09/10/2018 22:11

Good news although keep an eye for better when your new contract ends.

Landlines are cheaper and reliable, ignore the foolish mobile addicts.

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/10/2018 22:17

£92 a month for phone, fast BB and Sky TV (think we have all the channels except movies and sport).

theworldistoosmall · 10/10/2018 09:10

I would rather be a foolish mobile addict and pay £12 a month for all my calls than rely on a landline and pay £££ to call mobiles. (Not even considering how I would be fucked for work without a mobile)
