I’ve been sorting out my mum’s cupboards and came across the woman’s weekly birthday cake special. I’m going to take my inspiration from it for all family birthdays in the future.

Who knew you could make such masterpieces out of buttercream!

I have that Hamlin cook book. Love it !

Also love the Good housekeeping books. As a late teen, dm gave me some in my stockings. Still have them today

Actually this is an Australian woman weekly book

I have this from MIL, I've never tried any of the recipes but am tempted to try a sardine pie from it. :(

Eeek someone please tell me how to frost the monster cake from the AWW birthday cake book! I’m 37 so maybe the 80s or 90s edition?

Allow me to continue the OP’s good work. I give you...

RUBBER DUCKY

Note the inspired use of Potato crisps for beak

That clown cake 😬

I loved looking through cookery books as a kid, I remember being stumped at the steak tartare recipe and thinking there was a page missing 😂

A prized possession of mine is a Milk and Cheese Marketing Board recipe book, called More Please! that belonged to my grandmother. She got it when working as a school dinner lady, obviously it was to promote the use of insanely huge quantities of milk and cheese in school meals.

Every recipe is given for 4 people and for 100, and there are some great pictures of enormous blocks of cheese being cut up with cheese wires. I quite often do Cheesy cod parcels from it.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 06/10/2018 17:04

That duck is excellent! 😁

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 17:06

Omg we had that book and I distinctly remember the duck crisp beak and jelly swimming pool

Also the piano and sweet stall

I loved it so much

We got to choose every year

@namechange4000 the curry sauce recipe from that book is on my hob as I type! Best basic curry recipe ever!

MarshaBradyo · 06/10/2018 17:08

I might have to re-buy it (if possible?)

My DM has some amazing children birthday cake books. I think Jane asher.

She also has the collection of Sainsbury’s cookery books from the 1980’s. They are fantastic. Dinner parties and children’s birthday parties. She still uses them regularly.

morningconstitutional2017 · 06/10/2018 17:11

I've still got the Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook which was reprinted in the 80s or 90s - it was a gift for my DH. Many of the recipes are for families so not particularly appropriate for a childless widow, but still some good stalwarts in there.

DH loved it as he hated cookbooks which didn't have pictures in them. Also lurking on my shelves is a McDougalls Better Baking, Be-Ro Flour Home Recipes and a Bowyers Sausage Cookbook which I sent off for after saving up sausage wrappers. All measurements in Imperial and metric. They must be from the 1980s.

If you love weird and wonderful food you need to follow @70s_party on Twitter. It's full of things you can't imagine anyone would ever have wanted to cook, let alone eat!

I collect cookbooks and housekeeping books starting with very early 16th and 17th century ones, but my absolute favourite is this:

I have the card collection, it was my mums and couldn't get rid of it. it's dishes from all over the world, pastries, main meals, puddings, you name it.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2018 17:15

Not sure if mine has the one you want, @PersisFord, I can only offer Mister Monster, the instructions are somewhat vague, basically decorate with any sweet shit you can get hold of.

Could someone post the cover or title of the Be-ro book, please, so I can look for it on eBay? I found out (from MN) that my DMs chocolate cake recipe, that I have been using and adapting for years, was originally from Be-ro.

MrsFriskers · 06/10/2018 17:21

PrivateParkin you can find The Cookery Year on Abebooks...
