Anyone want a little giggle-I’ve found a cake book from the 1970’s

I’ve been sorting out my mum’s cupboards and came across the woman’s weekly birthday cake special. I’m going to take my inspiration from it for all family birthdays in the future.

Who knew you could make such masterpieces out of buttercream!

I have my mum’s She Quickie Cookbook from the 60s. It’s priceless. Truly disgusting recipes (spam features quite often) and jolly intros to the recipes along the lines of ‘Want to catch his eye? Show him this mouthwatering spam rissole!’

Anybody remember Varsity Pie, from Grub On A Grant?

PrivateParkin · 06/10/2018 16:22

The Cookery Year! I haven't seen the book, but we stayed in a holiday place once that had a Cookery Year wall planner, showing all the seasonal foods for each month - it was absolutely fab. I search on eBay for one from time to time but have never seen one for sale.

JasperCopeland · 06/10/2018 16:23

@namechange4000 I've got that book! I use it weekly! It's brilliant!

MyGuideJools · 06/10/2018 16:24

I've just dug it out, some of the recipes are interesting!

I had a 1930s economy in the kitchen cookbook with meal plans. Most of the breakfasts were:

Father: fried bacon and egg
Mother and children: Bread fried in father’s bacon fat.

Whoop de do

Has that buttercream duck got CRISPS for its beak?

You can tell the vintage of the lion cake because it is festooned with those jelly orange slices. They need to make a comeback.

I’ve got the 1970 dairy book of home cookery, from before I was born. It is brilliant. One day I will make the Genoese fancies with angelica.

JeffJarrett · 06/10/2018 16:27

Wow OP. That was definitely worth the wait! Those cakes are really something... I don't quite know what, but something GrinGrin

I’ve got the Australian women’s weekly cake book!! It’s brilliant! I’ve made loads of cakes inspired by it. The Jane Asher one was brilliant too.

Take home messages for kids cakes:
Green coconut for grass
Demerara sugar for sand
Blue jelly for water
Use little toys to decorate rather than trying to make fondant models

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/10/2018 16:29

The duck cake is a bit terrifying, isn't it? Shock

retainertrainer · 06/10/2018 16:30

It’s the perm and the crisp beak (on the duck, I mean). Lends it an air of menace.

Please post more tomorrow OP!

PersisFord · 06/10/2018 16:32

I had that ghost cake!! That icing is lush!!

Has it got a brown rectangle monster cake? If so, please could you post the recipe for the frosting? It was a kind of fudge flavour....

Mulberry72 · 06/10/2018 16:32

I’ve just ordered myself a new Be-Ro book as my old one fell apart! I love cook books!

MyGuideJools · 06/10/2018 16:32

I would probably never use these recipesConfused
This one is for using up your tough cock pheasantsGrin
