Anyone want a little giggle-I’ve found a cake book from the 1970’s

I’ve been sorting out my mum’s cupboards and came across the woman’s weekly birthday cake special. I’m going to take my inspiration from it for all family birthdays in the future.

Who knew you could make such masterpieces out of buttercream!

Is the buttercream dyed lurid colours as well? Some of the Fanny Cradock creations are a wonder to behold (not just the cakes either).

I was going to ask why an old broth recipe wouldn't still be valid, but I get it now!!

I like Contance Spry and Marguerite Patten for good retro cake recipes. I also have Mrs Beeton but I lost enthusiasm when she started talking about boiling veg for half an hour then putting them through a sieve!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 06/10/2018 13:28

I remember a book I bought at a jumble sale and which was given away years ago.

It was spiral bound and indexed to give different recipes for different teas, dinners, invalids, fish, game and so on.

Maguerite Patten was the author.

The pictures were mainly black and white and 'cloudy', as if taken back in the 40s or 50s and the colourised photos were almost water colours.

Some of the brawn and tongue recipes made me feel ill.

ProfYaffle · 06/10/2018 13:31

I love old cook books. I've got one from the 30's which has a recipe for toast water. You literally slosh a piece of toast around in hot water, remove toast, drink water Confused Supposed to be good for invalids

I have a stork margarine cookbook from the 1970's that I used when doing cookery at High School. I still use it now 🍰😀🥧🍪

Pythonesque · 06/10/2018 13:52

It wasn't this one was it?

Having grown up in Australia, my mother passed her copy on to me after my children were born. I was then fascinated that several of our friends got copies as it was reissued. Some updates but mostly the same.

It's a great book for understanding how you can construct and decorate shaped cakes effectively. Finding the right sweets and biscuits for a particular effect is great fun! I've subsequently made a piano and a pipe organ cake, both "original" but grounded in what I learnt from that book!

I use my Bero baking book loads. The basic recipes are fool proof.

Both DM and DMIL have really old cook books and some of the photos look like the food's been sprayed with a plastic coating.

blamethecat · 06/10/2018 14:00

My mum had loads of women's weekly/be-ro type books. I do remember a birthday cake one, possibly with a blue cat cake on the front ? Very 70's Grin

MrsJayy · 06/10/2018 14:03

Mum got a microwave recipie sheet when she bought her first microwave in the 80s she stil cooks her bacon in the microwave and it is the best bacon ever

SneakyGremlins · 06/10/2018 14:05

@MrsJayy

What's the book? I'd love a broth recipe book!

Ixnayonthehombre · 06/10/2018 14:06

Oh my siblings and I used to look at that one all the time and choose which cake we'd have on our birthdays. I think my mum only made one of the cakes though, the train one. My mum got me my own copy years ago, I think it's still published Grin. The weirdest is the duck one with all the crisps on it.

MiddlingMum · 06/10/2018 14:07

Same here, it's my go-to recipe book when I need something simple so that I can adapt it myself.

MrsJayy · 06/10/2018 14:07

It has no front cover so not sure what it is called ill dig it out and see if i can find out the name of it.

ForalltheSaints · 06/10/2018 14:43

Delia Smith's first books were in the 70s, weren't they?

mateysmum · 06/10/2018 14:51

Marguerite Patten was a wonderful lady. She only died in 2015 - aged 99! I saw her being interviewed on TV and I bet she could teach anybody how to cook.
During WW", she was instrumental in teaching people how to make the most of rations. She was kind of the Mary Berry / Delia of the 50's to 70's.
I still use a GoodHousekeeping cook book from the late 70's. It's great for all the basics and everyday recipes without any cheffy faff I'm looking at you James Martin/Jamie Oliver

mateysmum · 06/10/2018 14:52

WWW2 !

Asterado · 06/10/2018 14:55

My Mum had hundreds of Supercook magazines from the 70s and 80s. I used to love those when I was a kid!

My Granny has an original Mrs Beeton which was always good for a laugh.

namechange4000 · 06/10/2018 15:01

I have a dairy cookbook from the 70's. The biscuits section was always my favourite!

Does anyone remember the Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook? Everything was really lurid, and aspic was a much loved ingredient. Whole chicken inside wobbling jelly anyone?

cariadlet · 06/10/2018 15:07

I learned to bake as a teenager in the 80s using my mum's be-ro recipe book that probably dated back to the 70s. I was so pleased when I found the same book on ebay.

Furrycushion · 06/10/2018 15:10

I've got lots of these. The dairy cookbooks (which we got from the milkman!) Had some interesting recipes. I use the be-ro one quite a lot.
