DENTAL ADVICE NEEDED - what do I need to do tonight???

Holy shit.

My back top tooth just fell out.

No pain. Or is that shock?

Certainly no blood. The root has come out too.

Supposed to be getting a longhaul flight in the morning & I know the NHS don’t ‘do’ dental so I don’t see any point in heading out tonight to A&E.

Clean with salt water?? It needs filing, has one very very rough edge, is catching on my tongue, no other ‘tooth’ left.

Help! Need to prevent an infection for a week. Can I take Amoxycillin I have left over from something else??

Have left message on dentist OOH but he won’t pick it up til I am supposed to be in the air.

Do you have holiday insurance?

BrokenFlipflop · 29/09/2018 21:06

Where are you flying to? For example I've had fantastic treatment in Thailand and it cost a fraction of the price of a dentist here.

SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 21:07

By the looks of it, 111 may be able to get an emergency dentist on the phone. Might still be worth a phone call?

Swilling salt water can't hurt, but I'd make the water room temperature or lukewarm, having boiled it first. Extremes of temperature are never great with dental issues, just in case!

Sounds scary, but if the root has come out with it I guess it was dead?

was it loose? Teeth don’t just fall out for no apparent reason and I don’t understand how the root has come out but there’s still a bit of tooth there?

postitnot · 29/09/2018 21:12

warm salty water. there must be a bit left that's sharp, that might cause an ulcer on your cheek or tongue which could be sore. you could do with having that filed down. wait til you get to your destination and find a dentist there?

Heratnumber7 · 29/09/2018 21:12

You shouldn't have amoxicillin or ant other ABs left over from anything. You should always finish the course. Not finishing the tablets you were prescribed will make them less effective next time. Don't take another part course of left overs.
Use your travel insurance to visit a dentist while you're on hols.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:12

I have no idea if it was dead, but that would make sense.

Flying to Portugal, I have a lot of health issues so have good travel insurance - good idea, thankyou.

Will ring 111 now.

Why do you have leftover antibiotics? No one should have leftovers. You need to finish the while course everytime. Antibiotic resistance. It's not a joke.

About your tooth. Knocked out teeth need to be treated quickly. If you've got the whole tooth, then try to reinsert it (thats from the nhs site). You might have to change your flight because you need to have this looked at.

I was given 3 months worth in one hit for an infection (I have autoimmune issues) and that’s pretty much par for the course, I always have an infection of some sort.

It wasn’t loose that I know of, last check-up was 4 months ago & all was fine. The tooth next to it (which was the very last one at the back) was extracted 18 mths ago with no issue.

Yes, it has a jagged edge now and is annoying me already. I have Adult Anbeaol Gel, Corsodyl rinse and steroid sprays for oral ulcers (all prescribed by a Professor) because of the autoimmune issues.

Very back tooth? Have you any history of gum disease? Wisdom teeth sometimes have very little bone and become loose, and if you have existing gum disease they can literally just fall out. I would say this is a chronic condition and while it does need attention, you are probably ok in the short term. If you smoke, don’t or at least reduce the frequency. Kept the area clean and don’t rinse excessively. You may be at risk of a dry socket so seek dental advice if you can.

chooooo · 29/09/2018 21:24

Ok this is wrong but can I see a picture?!

Sorry Blush

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:27

Ugh not dry socket again Sad I’d forgotten about that.

No gum disease, ever. My mum had a very bad childhood of dental neglect (not one of her teeth is an original) so good oral hygiene and dental care was embedded into me.

No smoking, never even tried it.

Should I avoid sweetcorn??? It feels like kernels etc can get stuck up there Blush

Discarded some as it had crumbled

I even wear the BRA at night (bite riser appliance) to prevent biting my tongue which causes trauma.

Is that picture the tooth?! Why is it black?!

icannotthinkofauser · 29/09/2018 21:34

Your tooth is black! No that's not normal

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/09/2018 21:34

Was the whole tooth black? Are your surrounding teeth?

SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 21:35

Umm, that's not a normal looking tooth to me. Very black. Has it ever been filled?

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 29/09/2018 21:35

Is the whole tooth black? How was it perfect 4 months ago and now dead?

Get to a dentist when you arrive tomorrow or change your flight and go before leaving!

Ameliarose16 · 29/09/2018 21:35

You can get temp filling material from chemists I'd get that atm for the sharp edge. That tooth is dead I can't believe they didn't pick that up! When was the last time you had X-rays? You should be fine while away cos it wasn't properly in your bone if it's just fallen out. Just can't believe this wasn't picked up at your last check up! Do a PP post said and do salt water mouthwash after eating but I think you'll be okay xx

Junebug123 · 29/09/2018 21:36

I don't think the root has come out from that picture

Ameliarose16 · 29/09/2018 21:37

Really wouldn't delay your flight- that tooth's been dead ages and is better out your mouth!

Junebug123 · 29/09/2018 21:37

Definitely don't try and reimplant it as suggested by a pp Confused

chooooo · 29/09/2018 21:38

I know the square root of fuck all about teeth but where is the root??

Ps Thanks for the picture Grin
