DENTAL ADVICE NEEDED - what do I need to do tonight???

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:02

Holy shit.

My back top tooth just fell out.

No pain. Or is that shock?

Certainly no blood. The root has come out too.

Supposed to be getting a longhaul flight in the morning & I know the NHS don’t ‘do’ dental so I don’t see any point in heading out tonight to A&E.

Clean with salt water?? It needs filing, has one very very rough edge, is catching on my tongue, no other ‘tooth’ left.

Help! Need to prevent an infection for a week. Can I take Amoxycillin I have left over from something else??

Have left message on dentist OOH but he won’t pick it up til I am supposed to be in the air.

It looks like a piece of amalgam filling or a piece of discoloured tooth certainly not a whole tooth. If you can't get to a dentist good call on a temporary filling kit from the pharmacy.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:39

Best I can get Blush

Was the rest of the tooth black, OP? It makes a difference!

Looks like the root is left

Cardiganandcuppa · 29/09/2018 21:41

But but but. It’s BLACK??!

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 29/09/2018 21:43

@Junebug123

Reinstating it was lifted directly from the NHS website. I didn't make it up.
But that was before OP showed us a black, dead tooth.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:43

Not black, more of a white/yellow/grey I think, DH has flushed it because it crumbled.

Having had a proper root around now (sorry if TMI) it’s the back half of the tooth that’s come out, as though it’s been chopped vertically Confused I wish I could get better photos. Will endeavour....

X-rays last taken 18 mths ago when I had the extraction.

SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 21:43

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd be fucking about with a temporary filling kit when it's not even clear what's come out of the tooth at the moment....

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:46

Never had a phone in my mouth before, wasn’t expecting to do this tonight!

OP posts:
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/09/2018 21:46

I wouldn't fill that. It looks like half the tooth has died and decayed; and there may be a fair amount of tooth left in your mouth...

I'd fly tomorrow; using sterilised salt water between now and then, and get it looked at when you land. It may need cleaning out or you may require temporary antibiotics until you get back and can have the rest extracted and the cause looked into - it looks badly decayed in parts.

Don't be too risky with this if you've got auto immune conditions; it's not worth it. The filling kits are great in the right circumstances; but you could trap in an infection.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/09/2018 21:47

We cross posted but definitely a dentist. The tooth next to it appears to be going black too. You need gum disease and other possibilities explored and treated.

SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 21:47

Portugal is short haul, but if there's anything not "right" in there, you run the risk of a lot of pain with the cabin air pressure changes, but if the tooth is essentially open, there's nowhere for an air pocket to form, I suppose!

Keep trying 111 and see if you can talk to a dentist.

How long is the trip for?

donajimena · 29/09/2018 21:49

silver I had air trapped in a dodgy tooth on a flight. I wanted to be shot.

MrsJoker · 29/09/2018 21:50

That looks like part of a filling, not a whole tooth thankfully. Seek dental attention ASAP.

ElfrideSwancourt · 29/09/2018 21:51

Im a dentist- that picture is of an amalgam (silver) filling- it's not the tooth and it's not the root, as upper molar roots don't fall out unless you have very severe gum disease and even then they would need some help.

If you can't get to see a dentist before you go, put a temporary filling from the pharmacy in it, making sure it's really clean before you do. This will stop the sharp edge cutting your mouth and tongue.

If you do have good travel insurance, get it sorted out when you get there - although they'll probably just put a stronger temporary dressing in.

Has the tooth previously been root-filled? If so, that's why it isn't painful.

Take plenty of painkillers on the plane in your hand luggage though in case it is still alive, as teeth don't like the pressure changes in flying.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 21:55

Sorry, I initially said longhaul, that’s the trip after this one. I’m there for 9 days, home for 5, then off to the other side of the world for 10. Assuming I can.

111 going to call me back, thankyou.

I do remember the dentist advising my DH that his tooth needed to be thoroughly cleaned before having it filled to ensure any infection wouldn’t be trapped. I totally understand why posters suggested the kit though. The edge is so sore on my tongue.

It feels like the nerve endings may be exposed? Am getting nervous now, adrenaline is wearing off. My phone battery is dying as well. Give me strength!!!

Can I have a warm coffee?? Wth do I do about brushing that area tonight??

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 21:56

@donajimena never had it in a plane, but had it when having a taster diving day. My god, that hurt.

Fencepaint · 29/09/2018 21:56

^What Elfride says. I'm a dentist too and that's the most sensible thing to do in your position.
Also, get the tooth really dry with cotton wool, before placing sone of the temporary dressing.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 22:01

X-posted with Elfride. Thankyou - I don’t know if has been root-filled but I am genuinely impressed with the question. By ‘really clean’ lots of boiled cooled salt water.....can you suggest anything else for extra oooomph?

I have plenty of 500mg Naproxon (for autoimmune inflammatory arthritis) I assume that’ll be ok to take.

OP posts:
1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 22:03

Will send DH out to get temporary filling. He’ll thank me for it one day!

Ouch to air trap. I can only imagine how that feels.

Intjinkntheysba filling and not avfull tooth x

Fluffyears · 29/09/2018 22:04

Stupid phone - I think that is a filling rather than a full tooth.

1000channelsofcrap · 29/09/2018 22:06
Grin Thought you were subtly trying to tell me to have a drink! Wine

Fluffyears · 29/09/2018 22:28

Think my phone has had a drink!

bookbuddy · 29/09/2018 22:32

Looks like the tooth was decayed or previously filled and that’s why it has broken. You definitely do need to see a dentist as soon as you are able infection is a risk.
