Not sure how long this thread will last for, but here goes.....

The Sun headline today is less than complimentary. I won't provide a link but basically Beckham avoided a speeding fine.

Is this the start of the backlash? It seems that the tide is turning and people are getting fed up of them (family as a whole).

Disclaimer: please don't write anything that will get you sued. I am not a journo TABLOID SCUM. just curious whether this is the start of the decline and fall.

Yes, I feel sorry for the younger kids. Please be kind. But it's odd how a family were lauded as The Best Thing Ever and now don't seem to be able to do right for doing wrong.

There have been negative things before, and they've always bounced back.

And if we're honest, which of us wouldn't get out of a speeding fine if we could (not condoning - just saying!).

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 12:30

He’s a dickhead who threw a hissy fit over getting a knighthood and likes to drive 20mph over the speed limit.

I’ve read that her fashion label loses thousands of pounds every day so it’s basically a vanity project rather than a viable business.

These things are well known and have been in the press a lot, as have his infidelities and the fact that their marriage is likely all for publicity at this point.

I think the tide has been turning for some time- it’s not like the late nineties.

Butterflycookie · 28/09/2018 12:31

I don’t really get it. A speeding fine is peanuts to him, why wouldn’t he pay it. Everyone else has to. Also, surely the lawyer would cost more than the speeding fine?

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 28/09/2018 12:32

Friend in PR reckons there’s a shed load of shit the papers could throw at the Beckhams when the time is right and that it’s coming. Also the marriage is entirely for show and that they’ve not really been together since Harper was born - and she was IVF. Apparently. Don’t sue.

notacooldad · 28/09/2018 12:42

To be honest most of us aren't David Beckham where a fine is next to nothing and even if he did get a ban from accumulated points if he already had them it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.
It's odd that he had gone down this route.

lLikeCake · 28/09/2018 12:47

I've had a few minutes to think about this. I think the real reason I feel uncomfortable about the whole headline (calling him Mr Smug) is the attitude of the media a) building them up b) destroying them. It's manipulation at its worst. At the risk of sounding like Donald Trump, what/who do we believe?

Yes, he's an arse. Brand Beckham is not my cup of tea. But I feel sad that the shit is being lined up to hit the fan. I know the press barons will be saying things like if you don't want us to print shitty things then don't do shitty things" but sitting on stories waiting to pounce? That's tantamount to blackmail, don't you think?

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 28/09/2018 12:49

I think he's shown his true colours by using that lawyer to avoid a fine.

LanguidLobster · 28/09/2018 12:51

He won't care. He's demonstrating arrogance by employing a lawyer to get him off on a technicality and wants to flout it.

SpottingTheZebras · 28/09/2018 12:54

I thought he had avoided speeding fines before and over the years there have been various uncomplimentary articles about him. I am not a fan but he does always seem to bounce back to some extent.

I can well believe Harper was IVF. I think from what the Beckhams said in interviews and then the fact she was a girl, makes them having sex selection likely.

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 12:54

@ilikecake don’t do shitty things and then cry when it comes out in the papers then!

I’m sure his alleged secret about the school teacher will come out soon, there’s talk of it everywhere.

LostInShoebiz · 28/09/2018 12:58

A large number of fashion labels lose money, even ones you’d consider long established household names. The key is in licensing projects that only come about once the brand reaches a critical mass. The label is taken very seriously by those who work in fashion so unless you have some kind of special inside knowledge I’m not sure how you’re qualified to call it a vanity project.

batshite1 · 28/09/2018 12:59

Everyone has a shelf life & once the media determine you are no longer valuable “on side” the negative stories come out. Look at Tiger Woods & how the press knew about his indiscretions but it was supressed for years.

LostInShoebiz · 28/09/2018 12:59

Also, why wouldn’t he just pay the fine? Because it comes with points, points add up, licenses are lost, endorsements are lost, visa processes are extended. Lots of reasons.

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 13:03

Seeing as they’re two of the vainest people in the world and she has zero training to be a fashion designer, just threw herself in there and announced herself one, id call that a vanity project.

And the fashion world is bollocks anyway that comes up with unwearable crap and promotes anorexia so I’ll take their thoughts on the matter with a sizeable pinch of salt.

Hanyu · 28/09/2018 13:04

There has been stuff about them before. Remember the whole Rebecca Loos affair? I think he has a shed-load of money stored away, so even if he does dip in popularity, I don't think they'll struggle financially.

Victoria's fashion line loses more and more money every year, but David is a board member and pays it off. That's why it's a vanity project. Any other business would have folded, but she has a rich husband to prop it up.

LostInShoebiz · 28/09/2018 13:05

Bollocks? It’s one of this country’s most profitable exports? It’s more valuable to the French economy than arms or aviation.

notacooldad · 28/09/2018 13:07

I've got a feeling that the tide is turning again for TW and he is going to be back in favour.

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 13:08

@hanyu yep!

@lostinshoebiz yep, it’s bollocks. Catwalk fashion is bollocks. It has zero relevance to your average joe on the street. It’s theatre.

Lots of industries are bollocks or bad for us and still make billions, take the fast food industry for example. Doesn’t mean it isn’t negative or bollocks!

LostInShoebiz · 28/09/2018 13:10

Everything doesn’t have to be relevant to everyone for it to have any meaning. I know very little about strong theory, doesn’t mean it’s bollocks. No idea about Rigby, find it boring as hell, doesn’t mean it’s bollocks. You understand very little or actively dislike my world, doesn’t mean it’s bollocks. Very small minded.

SillySallySingsSongs · 28/09/2018 13:10

The biggest issue is that he thought it was ok to drive 59 in a 40 then try to get off because allegedly a letter arrived one day late.

He wasn't a little over the limit, he was going 50% faster than the limit allows!

batshite1 · 28/09/2018 13:10

well if he’s winning again he’s valuable.

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 13:15

@lostinshoebiz I take it I’ve offended you with my dismissal of the fashion industry?

I personally think it’s very small minded to think there is value and relevance in an industry only concerned with vanity, silly clothes and frippery that barely anyone actually wears, and the exploitation of people in sweat shops.

But there you go. We beg to differ.

LostInShoebiz · 28/09/2018 13:18

I think you’ll find mass market clothing utilises sweatshop labour more. And if clothes are silly fripperies, can we take it you are wandering around in something you’ve manufactured yourself from a potato sack?

There is as much value in fashion as there is in any other creative industry. Or are music, dance, art and craft all bollocks too!

notacooldad · 28/09/2018 13:24

well if he’s winning again he’s valuable. Excatly!! the media love a winner! ( referring to the TW getting back in the media fold again)

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 28/09/2018 13:24

‘There is as much value in fashion as there is in any other creative industry. Or are music, dance, art and craft all bollocks too!’

So you place the same value on an insane outfit in a catwalk show as a piece of music that moves people or a novel that explores oppressed societies?

Ok, well that’s up to you. But I don’t think many would. In fact Anna Wintour herself said that she feels her fashion magazine career isn’t as respectable as those journalistic careers of her family.

I didn’t say clothes are silly fripperies, I said fashion is. The shit that vogue magazine says are ‘must haves’ that nobody really wears.

Anyway. You clearly like fashion and I don’t so no point in keep arguing!
