I'm in love with my dishwasher (reluctantly purchased) what other gadgets can I get that will be similarly amazing??

I have recently purchased a (second hand) dishwasher. I've resisted getting one for years. I was adamant that I didn't need one, there were only four of us, I'd rather have a cupboard etc etc. A few years down the line from the breakup of my marriage I am now living with dp (and my two DD's). I noticed old (to me) annoyances beginning to crop up around housework so I figured let's see-not really thinking it would help.
I love the bloody thing. It's saves time, the kitchen looks better, the dishes look beautiful and sparkly (it also turns out I've been living like a grimmer for years with unclean pots that I've hand washed to nowhere near the standard of the dishwasher). There have been fewer squabbles re whose washing up etc.
I also secretly quite like the gentle wooshing noise it makes when it's on (perhaps its primeval and reminds me of being in the womb Grin)
What other things can I get that will have a similar effect? Are tumble dryers worth the dollars? Will a Roomba similarly improve my relationship?

I'd like to add a steam generator iron to the list. You can iron your shirts on their hanger! You can revive older, crumpled clothes. Why on earth didn't I buy one sooner?

sexnotgender · 21/09/2018 15:25

Cordless vacuum, love it.

Got a refurbished one from dyson on eBay when they did their 10% off everything day. You’d never know it wasn’t brand new.

An electric pressure cooker ...
I bought one as an accidental amazon purchase and it's fantastic....

It replaced the slow cooker and means risotto, pot roast and soup are all regularly on the menu with little effort 👍👍

2 x washer dryers rather than seperate units. Half as many trips up and down the stairs. Amazing.

Slow cooker, dish washer and milk kettle close behind.

BertieBotts · 21/09/2018 15:40

Nothing comes close to the dishwasher IME. But I won't have any other airer now than a tower type. Argos and ikea sell them - so much drying space for a tiny footprint.

DH loves our robot hoover but I can never be arsed with it as you have to tidy up first and the chamber is so small.

TheBitterBoy · 21/09/2018 15:43

Loooove my Roomba (irobot 605). Genuinely life changing for those who loathe hoovering.

TheBitterBoy · 21/09/2018 15:45

Ooh putthehamster tell me more about the electric pressure cooker, faster risotto sounds very interesting.

IJustLostTheGame · 21/09/2018 15:50

To the poster who wanted to k ow how to thicken slow cooker sauce:
Corn flour. You have to use about 3 tablespoons, mix it in a cup of cold water and add it to the cooker about an hour before eating.
In a saucepan I only add a couple of tsps, but a slow cooker doesn't cook or heat the same way.

CGID · 21/09/2018 15:53

Karcher mop. It actually picks up the dirty water, doesn't just move it around like a steam mop or regular one. My new kitchen has acres of matt floor tiles that always looked streaky, now they look flat matt even looking towards the light. Easy to use, my cleaner wants to buy one herself and take it to all her clients.

queribus · 21/09/2018 15:54

Eufy robot vacuum cleaner - life changing! Sadly, doesn't do stairs

madrush · 21/09/2018 16:12

We love our robot hoover (can’t believe others don’t - are some brands worse than others? I’ve had roomba and Neato).

Needs tidy house (eats cables out of Apple plugs if she can) and frequent emptying but much more thorough job than I would manage Blush.

PleaseJustSayNo · 21/09/2018 16:15

Nespresso coffee machine

Returnofthesmileybar · 21/09/2018 16:27

I felt like that when I got a dryer last year,I had one of those washer/dryer machines and got a new dryer only one, oh my giddy aunt it was amazing!!

Then I bought a slow cooker and my life was complete!

To whoever asked about thickening sauces, I just throw two tablespoons of flour in with mine, no mixing it with water first or anything, just stick in your liquid and lash in the flour, whatever I have in the press, which is self raising at the moment and it's perfect.

CaptSkippy · 21/09/2018 16:28

I can readily believe that some robot vaccums are better than other. I have a cheap one and I guess this is a case of you get what you pay for.

FrayedHem · 21/09/2018 16:30

Electric can opener.

SpikyCactus · 21/09/2018 16:38

I have one of those coffee machines that you fill with water and beans, and it does literally everything. You press a button and it automatically grinds the beans, drops them into the filter, heats the water and makes the coffee. It is life changing.

I also have those drawer inserts which hold rolls of foil and cling film and have integrated cutters. And this rack thing which is attached to the cupboard door and slides out when you open it, so you don’t have to reach into the back of a corner cupboard because the contents slide forward.

And an under-bench wine fridge. Best. Purchase. Ever.

BertieBotts · 21/09/2018 16:40

TBF the robot hoover works fine it's just remembering to set it up which annoys me and I can never be arsed with it, would rather just run the normal hoover around. That also takes 2 minutes whereas the hoover goes round and round a room making annoying noise for about an hour. Having said that though we never really use the normal hoover now, it ran out of bags and we didn't buy any more for months so perhaps I am misremembering the effort of normal hoovering. The robot does do a good job - though agree you end up factoring in the hoover when choosing rugs. I didn't know black lines were an issue but extra thick shag type rugs are no good with it.

We've had two €100 Dirt Devil models which died after a year of use and then recently we got a good deal on a basic model iRobot/Roomba in Lidl which is better as it has a charging station that it goes back to rather than needing to be plugged in. Even the cheap one was okay at navigating stairs although it did fall down once or twice.

I think it's probably worth trying out one of the super cheap ones to see if the concept works for you, and then if you like it researching which of the bells and whistles sound worth it.

shoofly · 21/09/2018 16:46

I may have a problem.... dishwasher, tumble dryer, cordless dyson, steam generator iron, Actifry (air fryer) coffee machine and Panasonic bread maker..... Ok the last three I could manage without for a week or two. But if any of the others died it'd be a priority to replace them....

On a less technical note, I value my stick blender as we are home-made soup lovers. I also love my chilli de-seeder and onion goggles!

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/09/2018 17:08

@putthehamsterbackinitscage I also love my electric pressure cooker ( mine is a king pro much, much cheaper than the American instant pot). It is so much more a slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer.
It has a delay timer start, if your not there when it finishes it keeps the food warm.
It is better than a regular slow cooker as you can brown too.
This afternoon I made a pork belly casserole in 20 minutes all lovely soft pork and used I soak haricot beans. For the thrifty cook it is such a worthwhile investment.

Amaried · 21/09/2018 17:10

Air fryerSmile

Bubblysqueak · 21/09/2018 17:22

Couldn't live without my robot hoover. I love him. We have a very hairy dog and without my hoover my house looks awful.
I cried when my son murdered my first and cried again when she bought me a new one for Christmas!

Bobbybobbins · 21/09/2018 17:24

People are mentioning having tumble driers in their sheds - does that work fine then?? Never even thought of that! We don't have space in the kitchen but now thinking that might be a solution!!

SofiaAmes · 21/09/2018 17:25

Tumble dryer (but not the condenser kind) - get the big, gas heated American kind
Toaster Oven - big enough to fit a small frozen pizza
Cordless dust buster with a handle
Large American style fridge/freezer with ice and water dispenser on the door.

TheLastNigel · 21/09/2018 17:26

Trinitybleu-what's a milk kettle??
I've been googling pressure cookers for the last half an hour Grin
