Flat earthers- how is this a thing?

So someone I know has been posting some articles on Facebook and it turns out she is a massive flat earther- completely convinced the earth isn't a sphere but a flat circle, no gravity, sun the same size as the moon etc. When we have clear evidence this isn't the case how can people be so sure they are right? I'm just totally baffled by it. How on earth can you reason with someone who is so deluded and claims or your facts are propaganda and that NASA have tricked us to keep us all feeling inferior!

Is she really or is it a piss take? I always assumed most flat earthers were just tongue in cheek and want to be contrary, some just like conspiracy theories and some are thick as pig shit.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 19/09/2018 22:37

And some want to feel special for knowing the 'truth' us sheeple don't understand.🙄

EnglishRose1320 · 19/09/2018 22:50

See she has been posting for a while and I assumed it was tongue in cheek but having spoken to her she is completely taken in by it. Now she knows I'm not a believer she is sending loads of links and telling me her life has completely changed since she found the truth

People are astonishing, the earth is flat, the environment is peachy, women have penises and Facebook is definitely safe and not mining and selling every bit of data ever accessed about you on any computer ever.

Who'da thunk it?

Apparently the reason planes don't fly off the edge- well it's just like PAC man, they teleport back to the other side!

Time to prune that friend list no?

EnglishRose1320 · 19/09/2018 23:29

That was my first reaction but she is in a group of friends and I think it might cause upset if I do. Bit of a chicken when it comes to upsetting people.

How has the 'truth' changed her life? I mean, obviously the world isn't flat, but supposing it was and always has been, how is knowing this making her life different? What is the advantage of a flat earth over a spherical one?

EnglishRose1320 · 19/09/2018 23:35

Well apparently she feels less oppressed now, or some such nonsense. She knows that she isn't inferior (I'm not sure what she isn't inferior too anymore mind)

Then start posting your own links.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 19/09/2018 23:37

One of my best mates, who is normally extremely intelligent, has recently done a lot of research (ie google and YouTube 🙄) and is now convinced that the earth is flat. What makes me laugh more is that he has been a satellite engineer for over 20 years which completely disproves the theory. I just shake my head at him.

EnglishRose1320 · 19/09/2018 23:39

Thanks for the link disorganised

That's madness Crispybutty, it is so bizarre how someone who mostly on the whole seems to have fairly normal views can sway so far from the truth with this.

Me and DP were at friends recently having dinner and their son announced in conversation that he believes the earth is flat. He said read stuff on the internet that apparently is convincing. DP and I were like goldfish trying to form an appropriate response.

justjax · 19/09/2018 23:45

Well, this man doesn’t know much about anything, but he is utterly convinced that if you read enough about it, you’ll find out the truth... Grin www.facebook.com/519267610/posts/10155670601647611/

I just love the idea that teleporting is considered more likely that a spherical earth.

MarcieBluebell · 19/09/2018 23:47

How does she explain night/day and the seasons.

If it's flat is round or square! What about mountains?

SwedishEdith · 19/09/2018 23:51

Show him this. Grin

Maybe all the planets are flat and circular. I kinda want to read some serious flat earth websites but I'd always assumed they were all tongue-in-cheek.

Frequency · 20/09/2018 00:02

Whenever anyone talks about flat earthers, I am always reminded of this.

Mrskeats · 20/09/2018 00:06

There are flat earth groups all over the globe.

AutisticHedgehog · 20/09/2018 00:08

Have you never seen a flat earth lunar eclipse? Conclusive evidence.

GloGirl · 20/09/2018 00:12

I know a flat earther, it's a fascinating belief system. He believes that 'they' are trying to keep whatever is at ' the edge away from 'us'

Anything about space is a conspiracy theory by 'them' - e.g. moon and sun not really spherical, there are no other planets, space technology does not exist.

EnglishRose1320 · 20/09/2018 07:35

Ooh I hadn't even thought about what could be at the edge, of course 'they' must be keeping something away from us!

She has young children, do you think she asks the school to excuse them from science?

StorminaBcup · 20/09/2018 09:43

Flat Earthers are right up there with the dinosaur deniers 🙄

Ask her how she thinks volcanos work and why shadows don't follow the same line.
