Anyone still here who joined in 2006 or earlier?

Just ... hello really.

I consider myself a bit of an oldie but there might be people still here who were posting from the very start (circa 2000/01 ish?).

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go back 10-12 years on Mumsnet. Would it look significantly different? I remember lots of scandals about the changing of the appearance of the site. I guess there would be fewer adverts, sliders and pop-ups?

Woud we still have lots of threads headed like this
MamaGwhereareyou**

Hot topics of conversation might be baby modelling and the MMR. I can't honestly remember.

What do you recall about the early days of MN if you were here then?

I think I joined 2005/6 ish. Lovely to be reminded of some of those old names. I remember the blind date thread, so funny. But lots of threads were laugh out loud funny back then. There's probably lots the same now but they get lost amongst the thousands of others. I never went to a Xmas meet-up but wish I had now.

I think the site was a much nicer place then, more personal and generally kinder, but even now there are some where the kindness of strangers to another shine out.

A580Hojas · 20/09/2018 08:52

Oh what a lot of replies!

It's kind of comforting to know that I'm not the only one who can't quite break the habit Smile.

My abiding memory of the time when I was reading most frequently is of course moldies! What scandal that was.

I had three usernames over about 10 years but now nc all the time ... cheers Daily Mail/Reddit. I think there's lot of us like that hence the feeling of not knowing many people, when in reality so many of you are still here! Nawww.

I joined back in 2002. I’ve used a few different names over the years. It was very different then- threads moved much slower and I recognised everyone’s nicknames. I used to post a lot more then-these days someone else has always already posted whatever I was going to say!

Interested in this thread?

I joined about 2004, lurked for a good while before that but nobody would recognise me as I rarely start threads. I've nc but always had Lois in there somewhere. I have a love hate relationship with mn. There are a lot of rude, sanctimonious twats in here in amongst the great people.

jellycat · 20/09/2018 09:01

Anyone remember Bobbins? I sometimes think of her and wonder if she’s OK.

Ooforfoxsakeridesagain · 20/09/2018 09:04

So nice to see familiar names come up again. Mouldiest was a turning point I think, and then Penis Beaker.

I joined 2006/7. Had a fab AN group, we still keep in touch. Made some lovely RL pals through meet ups. MN supported me through relocation and divorce.

Marslady, Klaw and Lulumama were lovely to us. We did Secret Santa’s and all chipped in for Misdee’s supermarket delivery IIRC. Was a different place back then.

steppemum · 20/09/2018 09:05

I joined in 2002.
I had baby ds and was overseas with no other western mums close by and was very isolated.
dial connection, and each page took forever to load.

I remember custard, and rhubarb, two very prolific opinionated funny posters who kind of set the tone I think.

I posted about baby issues mostly then.

endofthelinefinally · 20/09/2018 09:07

I have been here since just after the SWMNBN debacle. So maybe 2003/4? I don't know how to check the date.

I name changed when my son died. The bereavement board has been an absolute lifeline for me. I don't know how I would have got through the last 2 years without it.

I am in very poor health now and have terrible concentration but lots of time. I spend far too much time on MN, but I have learned a lot from some very clever and wise people on here.

macdhui · 20/09/2018 09:08

2002 for me and it was brilliant. I lived on an island thousands of miles from anyone I knew. I loved Riven Princess Peahead somebody BlueShoes who homeschooled and inspired me to do so, adventurous Tilba Tilba who also homeschooled and traveled - custardo for her ascerbic wit ...some great people.

macdhui · 20/09/2018 09:10

Sent too soon - it was a life line for me. I learnt so much from others and was inspired by many. Thank you to you all !

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/09/2018 09:16

I remember lots of these names. I never won a name change competition but was in the Hallowe'en final once. I still do a Christmas namechange. I also remember the surfeit of Jilly Cooper names (although that was a bit later).

The long-running threads I was on were mainly in Telly Addicts —Torchwood and the fanjo wall, and the Downton threads with Lord 6 (somebody's G key had broken) and Pickles the chauffeur.

jellycat · 20/09/2018 09:16

Ah yes, steppemum, Rhubarb and Custard were a hoot! Cod was very entertaining (if blunt) too.

LIZS · 20/09/2018 09:17

2000/2001 here. Back in the days when Carrie and Justine were talking to each other!

Davros · 20/09/2018 09:29

Devilishpyjamas the good old days eh?
I mostly look at AIBU (which I only discovered about a year ago), Chat, Teenagers, Secondary Education and a few others. Originally I was almost exclusively on SN with a bit of Behaviour & Development thrown in. I recently got told on SN that I obviously didn't know anything about ABAHmm!
I'm so sorry to hear things have been shitty with DS1, I had an idea from FB but I stopped using FB over a year ago when I realised it was sucking the life out of me and MN fulfilled my anonymous ranting needs far better Grin
We were good mates, I'll dig out your email address, my life is quite peaceful at the moment although I'm expecting trouble to be brewing as DS is 23 and can stay in his current placement up to 25, ooer

TheFallenMadonna · 20/09/2018 09:29

2005 I think.

user187656748 · 20/09/2018 09:30

I joined in 2004 and have had umpteen name changes. On practically every day since then...Blush

ProfYaffle · 20/09/2018 09:32

BeachyUmbrella - that was RTKangaMummy who posted about what was on TV! She popped up again maybe a few years ago, trying to do that same thing but was shouted down by newer posters who were all Hmm about what she was doing.

GetOnYerBike · 20/09/2018 09:35

Count me in, I've been here since 2006 when Ds2 was born and I needed breastfeeding advice.

MN has changed a lot over the years. It felt small enough that you could remember people and their personalities stood out. Now it all moves fast and only a few names stick out to me.

I loved the support and the gentle piss taking which has sadly turned into vitriol. I often go onto classics. I had forgotten about DENTINOX but it is still a great reminder of the humour that is found on here.

I hated it when people were outed like Cod and Riven and it leaves you with a sense of loss for someone you don't know in real life. I cried over CatThief and I had never met her. And EarthMotherImNot whose amazing generosity of fostering left me in a state of snot and tears but lovely that her daughter posted on the thread afterwards to say how lovely it was for her Mum to have touched so many lives.

NotMoreHomework · 20/09/2018 09:49

The message in a bottle game helped me waste many an evening. The non-MN people who played it used to get really arsey about all the MN references in the messages. And every time you thought you'd beaten the addiction, some evil bugger would start another thread about it. :o

People used to complain about all the pushchair threads clogging up Active Conversations. Then someone would start a piss-taking thread about them ("Anyone got a Quinny Crapp in babypoo beige?") and the pushchair people would get annoyed.

And the SN board was full of ideas for things to do/make with laminators and velcro.

EmeliSandpit · 20/09/2018 09:52

I’ve been here since the days of Cod who was iCod when I joined. Loved reading anything by Morningpaper amongst many others.

I’ve had numerous name changes over the years and I’m an addicted lurker rather than prolific poster.

The thread that really caught my attention at first were by an amazing lady, whose name was often abbreviated to OJ. You’ll know who I mean if you were around at the time. The compassion and support given to her by an Internet forum was amazing.

Before moldies there were a few cliques but they made great reading and were very entertaining.

The advice on the parenting and education boards has been priceless over the years.

Does anyone remember the the threads where we sent a ‘Thing’ to the previous poster? It was a little gift to brighten their day! I still have the bracelet someone sent me.
Someone mentioned the drawing games earlier which was always fun!

LIZS · 20/09/2018 10:05

Oh goodness yes, the pushchair threads which went sour when the same one got repeatedly sold on for inflated prices and in worse condition, and the baby modelling threads which ended with a scam agency. Cod had one of the original cat threads iirc and Potty training bootcamps. There were many threads which were a bit Sad or Hmm - kids demanding uniform from the freezer, Lavender and the rifle, fake baby - whether potentially abusive situations, MH/SN issues or just for effect I was never certain.

Samcro · 20/09/2018 10:16

i joined in 2006.
so nice to remember the old names. used to love the brighton meet ups and getting drunk with Custardo

TheOriginalNomDePlume · 20/09/2018 10:21

BeachyUmbrella, the party field owner was Beetroot, I think.

I’ve been around since early/mid 2002, I don’t post much at all these days. I stopped around moldies. As always with these threads, it’s lovely to see old faces on this thread.

Old era posters who haven’t yet been mentioned... Rhubarb & her mate Custardo

TheOriginalNomDePlume · 20/09/2018 10:24

Ah, I hadn’t seen your post samcro

Waspnest · 20/09/2018 10:30

Oh god so many of those names are familiar, think I joined in 2006 just after dd was born (and just after SWMNBN). Tiktok was my hero and I was so grateful to the poster who suggested grapefruit seed extract for thrush. I remember joining Aitch's BLW site and becoming a lot little obsessed with dd's diet and MP's technique for pottytraining toddlers using choc buttons. Never did understand what the Mouldies thing was about. It's so much bigger now but there's still usually a thread somewhere that makes me laugh out loud although AIBU is full of batshit crazy people .
