should we get a super king?

Currently have a double with decent mattress which is 3 yo but next year will be redoing our bedroom (moved house since getting the other bed) thinking about the new bed.

Bedroom is 5.2m x 4m, bed is on the long wall, superking frame is around 2m. We have 1 child and another on the way, DS likes an early morning snooze with us, currently very cramped!

Anyone bought a super king bed and regretted it?

Superking and separate duvets here too. I love ours.

katmarie · 17/09/2018 22:03

Do it, we have me, DH, DS and two dogs, and still manage to all pile in. Also DH has 10 (ten, not a typo) pillows, in some kind of fort arrangement, and we manage to sleep comfortably. It was a godsend when I was pregnant too.

For those saying they struggle to change the duvet cover.

If I can manage at less than 5 feet tall, you all can! Grin

You will never look back with regret in this decision, and get separate duvets. I have a double so I can curl up in it. OH has a single.

Sandstormbrewing · 17/09/2018 22:09

We use a sheet under the duvet (between us and the duvet) and a bedspread on top, so the duvet cover rarely needs changing as it isn't exposed to us from underneath or sat on.

We bought one in May and it's the best thing ever. Both DC can snuggle up on a weekend morning with us. However I am now unexpectedly pregnant so we got too much enjoyment from the bloody bed.

Justabouthadituptohere · 17/09/2018 22:13

Love our super king. We cuddle a bit then go to our sides. Also got the tempur mattress and highly recommended. Sex isn’t the best on it but you can find other places to do that - but the sleep is the best!!

tenbob · 17/09/2018 22:17

I love our super king so very much

Downsides:
bit harder to find bed linen but John Lewis do some lovely ones so we got 2 sets and swap them over but if you're the sort of person who likes patterned or non-white bedding, it might be harder
A kiwi company called Wallace Cotton do some amazing ones

When you sleep in a normal double or kigsize, it will feel super cramped
PILs spare room is horrible now...

DCs can sneak into bed without you even noticing

Waddsup12 · 17/09/2018 22:17

Vispring mattress. I did a tonne of research but mine is heavy at 5ft.

TomHardysNextWife · 17/09/2018 22:22

We've got a Superking and would probably be divorced if we had a double as DH has got restless legs. I'm still contemplating a barbed wire line down the middle most nights as it is.

Bed linen isn't an issue (apart from Next who don't seem to stock it instore, just online). I've got all of ours without issue, they seem fairly commonplace these days.

theunsure · 17/09/2018 22:25

DH and I have separate rooms (due to sleep disorder), superking in each.
If you can fit it, you won’t regret it!

Blue25654 · 17/09/2018 22:29

Yes get one. Don’t even need to read past the title. GET IT Grin

Bluelonerose · 17/09/2018 22:34

I wish we had the room for a super king I ALWAYS book one for holiday.
Dh prefers them too as he said when I get to close he just goes gets in the other side and has plenty of room.

bananamonkey · 17/09/2018 22:34

Get it! We have an Ikea Malm frame with a Sealy Posturepedic mattress, it’s the best thing I’ve ever bought. Usually have a horizontal 2 year old in with us at some point in the early hours and that works! Be mindful of your staircase though. It was a struggle to get our mattress because of the bannister/staircase bend. I’m not sure it’s coming out again Confused

BlackNoSugar · 17/09/2018 22:35

We have a superking with a deep mattress, and it's a real pain to get fitted sheets that are actually deep enough and don't slip off the corners. Our current one is from John Lewis, cost a bloody fortune and we still have to use those grippy corner things to keep it on.

I do love the superking pillows though. Huge long huggy things. And when I get the dreaded hot flushes in the night, I can keep DH quite literally at arm's length Grin

bananamonkey · 17/09/2018 22:36

Bedding isn’t an issue, have sets from JL, Dunelm and Ikea and can make it up myself although the mattress is heavy so couldn’t lift it fully alone.

user1510568216 · 17/09/2018 22:36

Nightmare to change on your own & bedding is so expensive. Tk maxx good for bedding though. Make sure it's a mattress you can turn & move & not fixed. You will have a mountain in the middle otherwise after time.

Dangermouse80 · 17/09/2018 22:40

Super king all the way, never regretted it.

Onlyinanemergency · 17/09/2018 22:41

We often end up with two DC in our super king. While two single duvets work, one single and one double is even better if the children tend to gravitate towards just one parent!

theunsure · 17/09/2018 22:52

Oh I should have mentioned-ours are zip and link so easy to turn/move house and can have different tensions on each side.

I find them no harder to change, kingsize pillows are a must.

shutupandgotosleep · 17/09/2018 23:04

It's absolutely fantastic, especially when the kids pile in. The 4 inch memory foam topper is also equally as squishy and comfortable although fuck me getting the topper up the stairs took some doing. It took DH, me and one of the dc guiding us so we didn't get stuck.

Downsides- only one is the cost of the bedding. I get the Niys extra deep fitted sheets from Amazon. Washing the sheets is a 2 load job and it takes forever to tumble dry the duvet cover as it rolls itself up in a ball.

My next bed is an emperor bed though.

FTFF · 17/09/2018 23:24

Superking every time. I had one when I lived alone and now I hate having to share anything smaller with DH. Double beds feel so claustrophobic!

Our room is an odd shape, at the bed end we have 45cm each side of the bed so just enough to walk round but it's so worth it.

Nice bedding can be a bit of a nightmare to find but more and more places are stocking it.

MesM · 17/09/2018 23:40

Best purchase ever

BagelGoesWalking · 17/09/2018 23:53

Getting two mattresses that link together will make turning them easier. It's definitely a two man job to turn a superking!

twoundertwo54321 · 17/09/2018 23:57
