I was enjoying my slices of pineapple when my son, who is a massive source of useless information, tells me that as I was eating the pineapple, it was eating me back!!! I Googled it and it's bloody true 😲

So did people know this? How did I not know this??

Yeah, that’s why your mouth can hurt after eating it!

Spacezombies · 10/09/2018 12:22

Once you swallow it, then enzyme is destroyed by your stomach acid. So it's only really getting a wee shot at your mouth.... But is only tingly for a little bit!

TheCag · 10/09/2018 12:24

I’ve had blisters in the corners of my mouth from pineapples! Yes, I had to use google to find out wtf was causing it.

JLG19 · 10/09/2018 12:25

Every day's a school day!

Spacezombies · 10/09/2018 12:25

A fun experiment to show your kids though is to put some pineapple on top of a steak. The steak will break down and get mushy; it's a great way to show them how enzymes work.

JLG19 · 10/09/2018 12:26

Spacezombies Shock don't waste steak!

NewDirectionNeeded · 10/09/2018 12:27

Oh this makes sense now! I always get little blisters on my tongue when I eat pineapple, which is really annoying because I love them Sad

Spacezombies · 10/09/2018 12:27

Just a bit of frying steak! Not a proper nice steak!

BurningGubbins · 10/09/2018 12:30

Soak it in salted water for 5-10 mins before you eat it. Takes the edge off.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 10/09/2018 12:31

On hearing that pineapple could help bring on labour, I ate three pineapples over two days. It did bring on labour, but it made my lips and mouth swell up so much I gave birth looking like Leslie Ash in her trout pout days.

acatcalledjohn · 10/09/2018 12:35

The pineapple did not make it to England until the 1600s, and it became a HIT in the 1700s. Everything was made in pineapple shapes and painted with pineapples. It was THE status symbol! – If you had a pineapple under your arm in the 1700s… WELL, you were just the richest, coolest kid on the block. I am speaking literally though. People quite seriously took a pineapple to parties to show off, carrying it around for weeks until the pineapple started rot. You could even rent a pineapple for an evening.

If that doesn't explain the stunt pineapple then I don't know what will Grin

DGRossetti · 10/09/2018 13:33

Bromeliads...

DW used to have weekly Avonex injections for her MS, which has some unpleasant side-effects ("flu like symptoms"). Through some source I honestly can't remember back in 2002, I read that eating fresh pineapple (tinning destroys the enzyme) helped prevent them.

Which they did ....

Can also destroy your fingerprints ...

iklboo · 10/09/2018 13:38

YY - fresh pineapple makes my tongue bleed. Roasted pineapple with cinnamon sugar, however.......mmmmmm.

Witchend · 10/09/2018 14:20

If you add pineapple to jelly, it unsets it.

drspouse · 10/09/2018 14:21

Same for kiwi and papaya..

SoupDragon · 10/09/2018 14:24

Can also destroy your fingerprints ...

Useful to know for when I embark on my life of crime.

justilou1 · 10/09/2018 14:26

Great for marinating octopus so it doesn’t go rubbery when you cook it!

QuietNinjaTardis · 10/09/2018 14:28

What the fuck have I just read? Quite I don’t like pineapple right now.

AlrightBabby · 10/09/2018 14:33

I know, I'd never heard it before, but when I put a tissue on my tongue there was a bit of blood! Shock

Yes they do try and eat you back. They have enzymes in that makes the pineapple try to digested you. That's why you get a sore tongüe when you're eating them.

Nubbled · 11/09/2018 07:33

@acat you could rent a pineapple back in those days, to display at a dinner party to show how rich you were.

redsummershoes · 11/09/2018 07:38

yes. the pineapple enzymes are powerful.
they are even used in medicine to eat away' dead wound tissue in burn patients.

SapphireSeptember · 11/09/2018 08:24

This is why I eat the tinned ones. Fresh ones give me hideous mouth ulcers.

TerfsUp · 11/09/2018 10:01

It's the Revenge of the Stunt Pineapple.
