OMFG!!! Maneating pineapple

I was enjoying my slices of pineapple when my son, who is a massive source of useless information, tells me that as I was eating the pineapple, it was eating me back!!! I Googled it and it's bloody true 😲

First I find out they don’t grow on trees and now this!

My love for pineapple is fast diminishing!

Am I a freak then? My tongue is fine after eating pineapple I knew that a pineapple marinade is great for tenderising meat, I never knew why though, every day's a school day I suppose

Tinned pineapples are heat treated which modifies the enzyme so does not have the same effect.

It’s why you can’t use fresh pineapple in jelly ( if you were planning a 60s retro dessert feast) - the enzyme damages the gelatine so it won’t set. . Vegetarian jelly is likely to have a similar problem as it also has a protein base.

I think some people have more immunity to them than others. DH is fine eating them. I look like Dracula after a quick snack if I eat it fresh.

As a teenager, my grandmother taught me to rub the cut skin of fresh pineapple on my skin to exfoliate it. I still do it!

I think I'm inedible. They never try it on with me.

If you want super tender meat, marinade it in mushed up kiwi for 15 minutes. No longer or it literally falls apart. Works really well with thin lamb steaks.

I've never been able to eat pineapple as it hurt my mouth, and family thought me weird. I love the juice so always knew it wasn't the taste.

I'm particularly sensitive to pineapple and even the slightest hint of raw pineapple can make my lips and tongue blister or swell. Cooked pineapple is fine though, because cooking it breaks down the enzyme.

I think I read somewhere that almost all allergies are based on enzymes.
