JL/Waitrose Bohemian Rhapsody Xmas ad that wasn't... Love it or loathe it?

Anyone else clock this? It was shown in the 1st ad break in GBBO. You can find it on YouTube if you look. I thought it was funny, interesting, innovative and clever. I felt it was a non-Christmas if that makes sense, ie it could have been one but they deliberately didn't make it Christmassy. I also loved the passion behind it, having attended quite a few school concerts in my time, but none like this one. From a creative / ad pov, I thought it was very clever too. Did you love it or loathe it?

Pretty sure it was not supposed to be about xmas but just an advert.

I liked it! Wish my DC plays were that good Grin

Hoppinggreen · 04/09/2018 21:30

Meh

Maybugger · 04/09/2018 21:33

I liked it after being slightly bemused; it's different and unusual.

purplemunkey · 04/09/2018 21:36

It's the 4th September. It's not a Christmas ad. I think it's just a general brand ad, wasn't it about all their employees being 'partners'?

I thought it was fun.

BarryManilowRocks · 04/09/2018 21:36

Great 1st time. After that, not so good

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/09/2018 21:36

Yeah, meh, sorry. If only they put the same effort in to their customer service. Johnnie Lou Lou’s has definitely gone down hill I’m afraid, in my recent experience.

Sammysquiz · 04/09/2018 21:37

It was “Christmassy” because it isn’t their Christmas ad!

Sammysquiz · 04/09/2018 21:37

WASN’T rather!

PumpkinParent · 04/09/2018 21:39

I know this is a bit bah humbug but it smacked of trying too hard to me.
And I don’t get why they think emphasising the partnership nature of the business will boost business. I shop periodically at both JL and Waitrose but the fact of it being a partnership doesn’t influence how often I shop there whereas cost does.

timshortfforthalia · 04/09/2018 21:39

Great ideas, beautifully executed. Loved the teacher directing backstage. Cute but totally not twee.

Can you tell i liked it? Wink

cravingcake · 04/09/2018 21:41

It was a decent advert that did its job. I watched it and kept watching it to the end to see who/what was being advertised and wondering at what age and budget my kids school concert would be like that

Effective as it has people talking about it - and I have only seen it the once

timshortfforthalia · 04/09/2018 21:41

Pumpkin, i think the in it together thing is cause it's owned by the employees, not cause of the partnership.

purplemunkey · 04/09/2018 21:43

Yes, that's what I meant. You're a 'partner' rather than an employee at JL/Waitrose.

purplemunkey · 04/09/2018 21:44

Ah sorry, I thought that was for me but it was for pumpkin.

weebarra · 04/09/2018 21:44

I liked it, something a bit different.

BerriesandLeaves · 04/09/2018 21:44

Loved it

Muddlingalongalone · 04/09/2018 21:47

Hmmm not sure - firmly wedged on the fence here.
Great idea to focus on the staff & differentiate themselves but it sort of had the so what factor for me.
Combined with announcing job losses - probably could have kept them for another year just for the price of the Queen royalties...

EatSleepRantRepeat · 04/09/2018 21:48

It's not a Christmas ad - they launched their rebrand as John Lewis and Partners today (including a new women's clothes collection that looks rather nice!)

PumpkinParent · 04/09/2018 21:49

No, I get that Tim but I’m not sure whether the ownership side of things is something people factor in when making their shopping choices, that’s all. I think the ad must be meant to drum up trade. A friend of mine works for JLP and I know it is a business with morals (or at least more morals than some) but for us at home, JL and WR are a bit of a treat, not a regular shop. Anyway, I’ll stop wittering about something off topic and go back to blubbing at Long Lost Family.

EdWinchester · 04/09/2018 21:49

Why was it so long? We were all bored here after first couple of minutes.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 04/09/2018 21:53

We loved it.

SylvesterTheCat · 04/09/2018 21:53

I agree with Ed

susurration · 04/09/2018 21:55

My honest opinion is that they must have some right bloody drama queens in their marketing and advertising department to keep coming up with this ridiculously over the top adverts.

MeetOnTheLedge · 04/09/2018 22:01

Didn't like it. We were just sitting there wondering WTF it was for and would it ever end. Will definitely be fast forwarding next time.

EvaHarknessRose · 04/09/2018 22:11

We could totally imagine our primary school doing this. They live for the annual show, its great.
