JL/Waitrose Bohemian Rhapsody Xmas ad that wasn't... Love it or loathe it?

Anyone else clock this? It was shown in the 1st ad break in GBBO. You can find it on YouTube if you look. I thought it was funny, interesting, innovative and clever. I felt it was a non-Christmas if that makes sense, ie it could have been one but they deliberately didn't make it Christmassy. I also loved the passion behind it, having attended quite a few school concerts in my time, but none like this one. From a creative / ad pov, I thought it was very clever too. Did you love it or loathe it?

Just seen it on Facebook. Loathed it. I cannot stand that song anyway. What was it meant to be about? Didn't advertise anything.

LoniceraJaponica · 04/09/2018 22:36

I loved it. I thought it was very clever getting the children to sing such an iconic song.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 04/09/2018 22:37

Loved it. I now have unrealistically high hopes for school concerts...

DickensianHysteric · 04/09/2018 22:39

I loved it!

crosstalk · 05/09/2018 13:36

Loved it. Not sure about September for a launch date for a Christmas ad. Suspect they got the idea from Love Actually ....

Rebecca36 · 05/09/2018 13:39

I loved it, husband and I were both enthralled. Can't wait to see it again!

They will have to pull out all the stops to top that for their Christmas advert but JL ads are always top class.

I hate getting the shortened versions, feel short changed :-).

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 05/09/2018 13:41

Loved it! Immediately knew it was John Lewis without knowing it was coming! I generally do adore their ads mind you!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 05/09/2018 13:42

And it wasn’t a Christmas one! Not in September good grief!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/09/2018 13:44

It's September! I came back from my summer holiday last weekend. Stop mentioning the C word. Stop it!

TwitterQueen1 · 05/09/2018 13:59

Grin Grin I know it wasn't a C one, but it did feel like one because it was all warm and fuzzy. I thought it was very clever.

I once several times took a water bottle filled with g&t to school concerts because they went on for 2-3 hours and it was the only way I could get through every member of the guitar group having their own solo - with the same piece. And my DCs never did guitar. And that was just one instrument.....

We just watched bake off on catch up with the DSs. The advert ended and DS1 (10) breathed, "that's amazing..." Good enough for me!

NellieBee · 05/09/2018 22:35

Loved it!

LinkyPlease · 05/09/2018 22:46

Try hard shite IMO

FamilyOhNo · 05/09/2018 22:48

Loved it

domesticslattern · 05/09/2018 22:53

I found it overlong and irritating.
But I have a pathological hatred of school shows full stop, they are always shit. So the premise of a school show is not going to fill me with joy.
I still love JL anyway.

derxa · 06/09/2018 00:02

Loved it but I used to run the school shows. It's my dream production.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 06/09/2018 00:16

Love it!

EnidButton · 06/09/2018 04:41

It was just another boring advert. Very underwhelmed after a thread on here saying it was amazing. It's nothing special. It's just alright.

They could have used it as a Christmas ad as it's like a School Christmas production thing. I wonder if it was an idea they rejected at their Christmas ad brainstorming meeting.

Dowser · 06/09/2018 07:32

I found it rather distasteful

Potatoandleeek · 06/09/2018 07:50

I thought it was annoying and trying too hard. I dislike the song anyway so was bound to dislike the ad

Odiepants · 06/09/2018 07:55

Too long and we all got bored and wanted to end so GBBO could get going again.

As adverts go it was ok but I don't get the love for what is basically a push for you to buy things from them.
