Middle class towns

We drove home from holiday yesterday and passed through Marlborough where we made a lunch stop to break our journey. What a fabulous town! Everything about it felt so upmarket; the shops, smart people, etc. Where have you been that felt so 'posh'?

Nowhere in the north is as middle class as nicer areas in the south. Big divide.

FloatyFlo · 30/08/2018 11:04

Yarmouth and Bury St Eds? I don't think so!!! Grin

Agree with Saffron Walden though.

Davros · 30/08/2018 11:05

Lichfield

I had an eye-opening night out in Richmond, North Yorks recently. The blatant and open drug-dealing in the market square on a Saturday night was not quite what I was expecting.

CramptonHodnet · 30/08/2018 11:19

Sherborne and Dorchester (Dorset)
Wadebridge (Cornwall)

AirandMungBeans · 30/08/2018 11:27

Ipswich??? Is there another Ipswich in this country? It can't be the one I know! Yes there are nice bits, but so many dodgy areas with equally dodgy people. The town centre is awful.

SnailMailFan · 30/08/2018 11:45

Winchester has a huge drug problem, and lots and lots of homeless people. It used to be wonderful, but I feel frightened there now sometimes.

I wouldn’t say Guildford has an ex army feel. The army were in Aldershot, which although close, isn’t that near. Guildford has never been an army town to my knowledge (lived in Farnham almost 40 years)

Seriously, Ipswich and Yarmouth?! Confused

Anyway, the smaller villages around Norfolk can be very middle class/quite "posh".

I always think Holt is very posh with its fancy shops

bilbodog · 30/08/2018 12:17

I think she means Yarmouth, isle of wight - not great yarmouth 😄

BluthsFrozenBananas · 30/08/2018 12:32

I wouldn’t agree with Canterbury, the center is very pretty, historic and touristy, a lot of the bits where people live are either student ghettos or similar to other east Kent towns like Chatham or Gillingham.

For my money if we’re discounting villages Sevenoaks is Kent’s most middle class place, followed by Tunbridge Wells, although the latter has gone a bit middle aged hipster of late.

MorseandLewis · 30/08/2018 12:37

I was going to say that about Richmond north Yorks. Pissed up soldiers-nothing genteel about it.

MeandMoo · 30/08/2018 12:38

Farnham and Weybridge are Lottery Win Goals 😍

MorseandLewis · 30/08/2018 12:42

??? I don't get this. Harrogate and Bolton are nowhere near each other. Not even the same county

Bolton abbey is. Very genteel.

Harrogate is awful at the moment. The place to go from South Yorkshire to get drunk, last train back to Leeds, nightclub, 1st train back home.

Gangs of out of control drunk pre-teens/teens on the west stray, regular vandalism in the centre every night

Can’t walk my dog without seeing some random drunks dick as he pisses all over. They used to publish the names of those found publically urinating in the local newspaper, they would need a special weekly edition at the moment.

You've obviously never been to Ilkley, Harrogate, Alderley Edge, Chester, Ponteland, Wetherby, North Leeds, Lytham St Annes or plenty of other of the nicer areas in northern England (and probably Scotland and North Wales too, but I don't know which areas specifically.

beingthere · 30/08/2018 12:45

Henley

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 30/08/2018 12:47

Lots of little towns in North Yorkshire

Not Harrogate. Visited years ago when lovely and so grotty when I returned recently

Brampton in Cumbria. Alston.

In Scotland places like Melrose, Peebles, north Berwick. Little villages like aberlady. Dunkeld.

MorseandLewis · 30/08/2018 12:47

Yarm! Fur coats and no knickers town.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 12:47

There's also Booths, which is exclusively northern and makes Sainsburys look like Asda and Waitrose look rather ordinary.
