Is 'fart' a vulgar or coarse word?

My OH says yes.. I'm astonished it could be considered vulgar. He would prefer I use guff or trump, I've always thought they were on the same level...

So mumsnetters, is 'fart' acceptable and if not what do you use instead?

Yes, it is of course both vulgar and coarse.

HannahnotAgnes · 24/08/2018 21:48

Agreed - vulgar.

OutingMyDog · 24/08/2018 21:48

Guff is much more vulgar than fart, and trump is unbelievably, skincrawlingly prissy.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 21:49

Pump

OutingMyDog · 24/08/2018 21:49

Pump is even worse than trump.

AspieHere · 24/08/2018 21:51

It's vulgar and I don't like my DCs saying it. I don't use it myself either at home. I actually don't see why it even has to be discussed and it annoys me that it's something that gets talked about in my house. I was brought up having never discussed other people farting at home. DH seems to feel the need to ask the DCs about it when they do it. I really don't see the need.

EyUpOurKid · 24/08/2018 21:51

Vulgar yes. But we call it a bum laugh.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 24/08/2018 21:52

Fart is one of those words I (probably irrationally!!) despise!!!!

Pump or trump all the way in our house!!

EvilRingahBitch · 24/08/2018 21:53

It’s vulgar but none of the colloquial alternatives are any better.

Processedpea · 24/08/2018 21:53

Fart is a perfectly good descriptive word for farting guff or trump sounds like something a 1950s schoolboy would say perhaps he would also like parp

Spam88 · 24/08/2018 21:54

We weren't allowed to say fart as kids, it was a fluff. I don't see anything wrong with it though, Guff, on the other hand, is appalling.

CherryPavlova · 24/08/2018 21:54

Fart has potentially been in use for about 800 years. I think it’s a much better word than silly alternatives like ‘Trump’ (which suggests a competition) or worse break wind or something equally twee.

CocoDeMoll · 24/08/2018 21:54

I know someone that doesn’t let her children say it and tells my dd off if she says it ConfusedGrin!!

PaintBySticker · 24/08/2018 21:55

“Guff is much more vulgar than fart, and trump is unbelievably, skincrawlingly prissy.”

This.

My pre-schooler says fart. Although my husband prefers if the children use pop.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/08/2018 21:55

No, but 'trump' is. Trouser cough, botty burp, guff, boff, farts, who let Polly out of prison and park are all fine. 'Passing wind' is fucking prissy. Anyone who doesn't find this stuff funny is very uptight. No doubt someone will attack me for that but I fart in their general direction.

Kittykat93 · 24/08/2018 21:55

I hate the word, but don't really prefer any of the other words either!

Laughing at pump and trump Grin

sendthecoffee · 24/08/2018 21:55

That's the word we use - kids (4,6
And 8) use. The eldest occasionally uses the word trump, which he has obviously picked up elsewhere and that makes me cringe much more then fart.

CocoDeMoll · 24/08/2018 21:56

Oh, I’ve just seen there’s a few ‘fart averse’ peeps out there! I don’t get the issue. It’s like saying poo or wee.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/08/2018 21:56

Guff!!! Makes me feel nauseous. Far worse than fart.

BishopBrennansArse · 24/08/2018 21:59

If it's good enough for Queen Elizabeth I it's good enough for me.

Is 'fart' a vulgar or coarse word?
Touchnotthiscat · 24/08/2018 22:00

We say ‘fluff’ in our house. And they would be told that if they said ‘fart’ although I do appreciate it’s not a big deal. I also think ‘guff’ is worse... no idea why?!Grin

TheClitterati · 24/08/2018 22:00

Fart is my preferred word. All the others are cringy.

Really this is all a lot of hot air about nothing Grin

tobee · 24/08/2018 22:00

Fart is a fantastic word. It astounds me that people in 2018 are so uptight about it.

CocoDeMoll · 24/08/2018 22:00

The word ‘guff’ smells.

Leeds2 · 24/08/2018 22:01

I loathe the word, and would never use it. I don't actually have an alternative though!
I have never heard anyone use the term "guff".
