Is 'fart' a vulgar or coarse word?

My OH says yes.. I'm astonished it could be considered vulgar. He would prefer I use guff or trump, I've always thought they were on the same level...

So mumsnetters, is 'fart' acceptable and if not what do you use instead?

I say pump and so does my little one. My teen says fart and DH says trump - hate both of those (words not the people! 😂) They have strict instructions not to use them in front of 3 year old as she repeats everything!

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2018 22:02

I wasn't allowed to say fart at home as DM, who is quite prim, considered it both vulgar & coarse. I happily say it at home now because I can, as do the DC.

I love the QE1 story Grin

fadeintoobscurity · 24/08/2018 22:03

My two year old currently calls it a "poo-pop"!

glintandglide · 24/08/2018 22:04

Yes I think it’s vulgar. So is guff.

We say blown off or wind. The children say popped

LaBelleSausage · 24/08/2018 22:04

I was brought up to say “break wind” or “pass wind”, but my DM is the kind of woman who is utterly scandalised by the word ‘knackered’ because she thinks it has sexual connotations, so that should provide some perspective.

supadupapupascupa · 24/08/2018 22:05

growing up fart was a swear word to me. certainly us kids were not allowed to say it. but DH's family total opposite. we come from the same town!

Topseyt · 24/08/2018 22:05

Fart is fine. Nothing wrong with it.

I know some people think it is crude, but the other names farting is given are cringe-worthy and ridiculous. Gift, pump, fluff, toot, fairy puff, trump etc. are utterly ridiculous.

Mind you, it is true to say tha Donald Trump is a stupid fart, and President Fart does have a ring of truth to it.

Randomnumbers7483 · 24/08/2018 22:06

Those of you who don’t use Fart - what on Earth do you call it then?

CocoDeMoll · 24/08/2018 22:07

topseyt gift? That’s a great alternative Grin

RhythmStix · 24/08/2018 22:07

Yes it's very vulgar. In my household we refer to 'passing wind'. We are quite posh though.

AdventuresRUs · 24/08/2018 22:08

There are a lot of people who consider it swearing akin to "shit". Not awful but horrid but horrible comimg out of a child's mouth and to be reprimanded.

I dont know whats better though :(

ImMissHannigan · 24/08/2018 22:09

I'm really chuckling at this thread. But then farts and fart talk are funny no matter what age we are, right? When I was younger fart was a swear word. But now it is just another word. They use it in kids t.v. shows and films. Bum laugh has actually made me giggle enough for my daughter to ask. We are now discussing alternative fart words.

twofloorsup · 24/08/2018 22:10

As kids we had to say "blow off".
To me a guff is what stinky boys did in class in primary school.
Fart does what it says on the tin !

BishopBrennansArse · 24/08/2018 22:11

Shit mist? Green fog? Grunts? Botty burps? Air biscuit? O ring oboe?

Randomnumbers7483 · 24/08/2018 22:11

Ok - slow to post there - can see most people have answered now!

Those of you that find farting embarrassing or vulgar and can’t mention it at home - why? What is so crude about it? What word do you use for Poo then? If people cheerfully discuss going for a Poo - then why is Farting so much worse?

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 24/08/2018 22:12

I wasn't allowed to use the word growing up. It was a pop or a blow off.

Bloody ridiculous. I say it now, my kids say it now. They're polite enough to not use it in the company of others.

Crap was also a banned word.

I say fuck, shit etc in front of my kids. They're teenagers and I've never heard them swear, they are massive prudes! Probably means they'll make their kids use words like windy pops etc! Grin

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2018 22:15

Fart-but no real need to call it anything very much surely?

Joinourclub · 24/08/2018 22:19

We are a ‘fart’ household , but I wasn’t allowed to say it as a child myself. I wasn’t allowed to say bum either.

LapdanceShoeshine · 24/08/2018 22:20

My mother desperately wanted to be genteel (despite living in a council house Grin) so we had to say blow off.

She died decades ago, which is probably a good thing as I am very much not genteel and we use fart. She would have been mortified.

tobee · 24/08/2018 22:21

Fart is definitely used by posh people. It's middle class people who think you should bodily functions. Pearls get clutches etc.

LapdanceShoeshine · 24/08/2018 22:21

(She was so genteel she also refused to be called mum. Hyacinth Bouquet might have jollied her out of all that...)

tobee · 24/08/2018 22:22

*you should not refer to bodily functions I meant.

triwarrior · 24/08/2018 22:23

I hate it. We say “toot.

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2018 22:25

The posher you are the more basic and Anglo Saxon your language.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 24/08/2018 22:26

We were told fart was a swear word growing up, albeit a mild one. We called them poops Grin
