Is 'fart' a vulgar or coarse word?

Badumdumdum · 24/08/2018 21:46

My OH says yes.. I'm astonished it could be considered vulgar. He would prefer I use guff or trump, I've always thought they were on the same level...

So mumsnetters, is 'fart' acceptable and if not what do you use instead?

Gosh I always thought a fart was a fart.

No idea it was vulgar or rude from children. All the other words sound hideously twee to me. But I’m not English.

What’s it similar to - crap? I can see that might sou d weird out of the mouth of s child.

HannahnotAgnes · 24/08/2018 23:11

Crap is much worse than fart - it's just short of being a swear word Grin

Gooseygoosey12345 · 24/08/2018 23:12

My dad HATES it, we had to say 'fump' growing up. I don't find it offensive, but then I don't find many words offensive, it's just language

aperolspritzplease · 24/08/2018 23:13

My mother is horrified by fart, bum and poo. She would rather bottom burp, bottom and loady.

The kids would be ridiculed at school. Times and language change.

squirrelnutkins1 · 24/08/2018 23:17

We were never allowed to say it as kids. I'd still never say it in front of my mum!

PinkAvocado · 24/08/2018 23:18

Fart is perfectly acceptable. As children, we were encouraged to say ‘pop’. But pop is used for other things (fizzy drinks, what the weasel does, music genre) so I’d rather stick with fart. Fart fart fartedy fart.

tobee · 24/08/2018 23:18

Loady? Never heard that before. 🤢🤮

TurquoiseCat · 24/08/2018 23:22

@BishopBrennansArse good god. I never realised shit mist was missing from my vocabulary. A thousand thanks to you...!

We say fart. Guff sounds a bit dirty and moist for my liking.

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2018 23:37

I still want to know why you have to say it so often once your children are older than about 7.

9amTrain · 25/08/2018 00:16

Guff is better than fart how?

And trump is just pathetic.

pinkhorse · 25/08/2018 00:17

My 8 year old isn't allowed to say fart and I've never called it thst either. It's trump in our house

MaisyPops · 25/08/2018 00:19

It is a bit crude. Put it this way it's not a word I'd use in polite company but one I wouldn't bat an eyelash if it was used between me and DH or friends.. I'm not a massive fan of discussing people's gas functions mind so it's not a word I really use Grin

ShovingLeopard · 25/08/2018 00:28

We tend to use 'flatus', or 'doing a Donald', just because they are hilarious when said by our 3 year old.

Badumdumdum · 25/08/2018 09:31

Bertrand - I'm not sure that anyone 'has' to talk about it or say it, it just comes up every so often doesn't it? And even if you do pass wind but don't talk about it, everyone knows the terminology so it's something you can discuss in threads such as these.

Fair enough. I'm a fart woman myself. But I'm also a leaving the room to fart if at all possible, and if it isn't, just saying "oh, sorry about that" or "please excuse me" depending on the company woman.

maggienolia · 25/08/2018 09:45

It was "blowing off"when I grew up.
We're another fart household here. If it's good enough for Chaucer it's not good enough for us.
I do like "doing a Donald" though.

maxthemartian · 25/08/2018 10:03

RhythmStix surely more Hyacinth Bouquet than posh?

I find it bizarre that fart is considered a swear word. It's just a description. Trump, pump, guff, fluff, pop etc are all toe-curlingly awful.

And yes I love talking about farts, I find them hilarious.

maxthemartian · 25/08/2018 10:05

Actually coming back to pump, it's a word for shagging in Scotland so now I have a vision of someone rhythmically farting with each thrust.

Summerisdone · 25/08/2018 10:09

Swearing really doesn't bother me, Cunt and fuck are after all probably my favourite words, yet I cannot stand the word fart.
I always use trump, when DS comes back from his dad's eow he will will use fart because he's copied his dad, but I always correct him and tell him it's trump as I find the word fart so vulgar and crass

MeMyselfand · 25/08/2018 10:39

We use the fart word I'm my house, I find the word pump too descriptive, it gives me the dry boak.

Oh and we also say "who's dropped their handbag" then proceed to blame it on everyone but the person that's done it, you know the saying 'whoever smelt it dealt it' Grin farts are funny

FeminaSum · 25/08/2018 10:42

I'd say it's a bit crude. In more formal situations I'd say pass/break wind (or not mention it at all, more likely!), but fart is fine otherwise. I don't think it's a word that children shouldn't say.

Trump is a bit silly and fluff/bottom burp are ridiculous. I've never heard guff before and wouldn't have known what it meant.

Pump is the absolute worst as it gives me an immediate mental picture of a bottom pumping out farts. Ew.

LongSummerDays · 25/08/2018 10:43

Nan would say "who's been blowing trumpers?"

I say fart, OH says guff.

Springlambs · 25/08/2018 10:45

We mainly use fart, I was brought up with fart being a swear word but it's in children's books etc now so I don't stress if the DC use it!
Dsis uses 'whizpop' as in the BFG and DS1 uses 'excreting methane' Grin

Malibucyprus · 25/08/2018 10:57

We use “who’s shit their pants?” in my family Blush

CookPassBabtridge · 25/08/2018 11:09

It's vulgar but I like being vulgar so it gets used a lot Grin
