Do you know anyone that had a room redecorate by "Changing rooms"?

The episode of the smashed teapots just popped into my head and i went on a wee google changing room rampage. Some -most- of the designs are so shit and I've just seen some up close pictures of the work and it's horrendous.

Just wondered if any of you had appeared on it and what was the outcome? Did you love it, hate it? Did they restore things if they were shit?

One I always remember is them thinking it was a good idea to put roughed up plaster of paris all over someones brand new fridge freezer and stick plastic lemons and grapes in it.

They had gone for a "sicillian theme" kitchen and stenciled lemons oranges and grapes everywhere.

They bloody loved a good stencil.

They also put artex type plaster on the ceiling with all these fale plastic grapes and olive vines dangling down. But low enough to brush top of head.

Family sobbed and sobbed and they got them a new fridge and replastered the ceiling 😂

Oh god the kids version!!!! I swear there was an episode where they built a slide from the kids room into the living room 😯. I remember it as going OUTSIDE and curling round like a flume, but surely not?

I also seem to remember a room that was a bouncy castle (as in whatever they make bouncy castles out of floor to ceiling and an air pump). And the football shirt one definitely happened!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 22/08/2018 19:44

Yeah the kids that made the slide were Linda Robsons!

There was another family and they turned one of their rooms into a Cyber Cafe, something the mother had outright said was her worst nightmare 😂

HollowTalk · 22/08/2018 19:51

The episode I remember most was where they nailed down some MDF on the floor and the neighbour was on her hands and knees with a ruler and a pen, drawing floorboards with a Hmm expression on her face.

KerfuffleShuffle · 22/08/2018 23:29

theliverpoolone it was colin and justin and if i remember correctly they were Scottish? Think it was how not to decorate or something....remember finding their pointless bickering really entertaining as a teen watching with my mum and grandma. Lovely memories.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 23/08/2018 13:40

@HollowTalk that's hilarious Grin

I see there are quite a few episodes on YouTube! LLB looks so young!

My aunt worked with someone who was on one of the very early series of Changing Rooms. They painted lots of little pictures relating to their hobbies on the walls. They also rescued a carpet which was being used in the garage and cleaned it up and put it back in the room. There was a reason the carpet was being trashed in the garage - no-one liked it.
I think they enjoyed the programme making and the results were OK as it was in the early days before they got carried away always doing the one thing they said they didn't want.

Oddcat · 23/08/2018 15:20

Wasn't there an episode where the designer put an ant farm on the wall and had a real grass window seat ?

divafever99 · 23/08/2018 15:27

I'd forgotten all about this! Used to love watching it! I wonder how many rooms haven't been redecorated.

HollowTalk · 23/08/2018 19:38

It seemed like every other week one of the "designers" would say, "Now I know you say they hate lime green..."

HollowTalk · 23/08/2018 19:48

That Buzzfeed article is so funny.

Whisky2014 · 23/08/2018 19:59

They did seem to always give them what they specifically didn't want.... I wonder how they'd have felt if that was happening to them!

Forget the decor, I think the most cringeworthy thing in all of this is that I used to actually emulate LLB with my clothing and hair style as a teenage girl, and thought I looked amazing. Blush People used to comment that I looked like LLB... 'i know, thanks' I would proudly reply!

FesteringCarbuncle · 23/08/2018 20:19

This thread is fab. I'm howling at them
I would love to watch repeats of changing rooms. I'll never forget the poor woman who complained she had a whores boudoir. I seem to remember she fell out with her friends
As soon as I saw House Dr above I was practicing saying mirror without saying r
Does anyone remember change that?
It was a daytime programme where they took a piece of furniture and they stuck mdf on and changed it into something totally different
That was a scream too

At least with 60 Minutes Makeover you get new furniture. Getting Handy Andy to build stuff in your room was never going to be a good idea.

I wonder what he's doing now? It's hardly as though anyone was going to employ him after that programme!

IhatetheArchers · 23/08/2018 20:47

I've got a 'Handy Andy' mug

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 23/08/2018 20:48

I used to watch it as a kid and couldn’t see any issues regarding taste at the time.

Whisky2014 · 23/08/2018 20:48

Lol!

That one with the kids, wasn't it a firefighter's pole they put from their bedroom to the living room?

2018SoFarSoGreat · 23/08/2018 21:43

Loved CR, hated most of what they did but did stencil everything that didn't move for a time or two

Reminds me of when I was pregnant and on bedrest, and DH said he would paint the dining room. It had glass panels in the door, and from where I was lying in my bed I could just see what looked like the horrendous glow of light purple. Lilac. Surely not, I thought. Yep. Lilac above, dark purple below. It was as awful as it sounds. He was very proud of his handiwork.

Squirrel26 · 23/08/2018 21:44

I used to bloody love Changing Rooms. I thought it was amazing. Possibly because I was so young when it was on that staying up to watch it was a massive treat and I had to be in my pyjamas ready for bed before it started...

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 23/08/2018 21:54

The kids one on ITV had different families each week so it's possible they did both. (Pole and Slide)

It's always stuck in my mind that show, because of the one with the Narnia bedroom because it was cool, but also because the Mum was so strict that it felt like she was literally finding out who her children were that evening and it left me with a sense of sadness.

SongToTheSiren · 23/08/2018 22:21

Oh my god, I've been sat here laughing away at all the Changing Rooms crazyness, went off to Google the 'tarts boudoir' and the images of that are scarily similar to the bedroom in my house when we first moved in! I remember when viewing our house thinking that the bedroom decor was interesting. What made it worse was that we were buying it off a former teacher of mine at secondary school - brain bleach required! Needless to say we redecorated pretty damn quickly after we moved in 😄

I remember one programme where they put one or two of those wire cages that you fill with rocks in this elderly couples bedroom. She went mental. There was also the female Scottish designer with the long red hair who gouged a pattern on someone’s lovely dining table with the points of a pair of scissors. I always thought she was on for a joke but everyone appeared to like her. There was the dark living-room that ARR painted dark brown and orange and then declared that it had brightened up the room.
