Do you know anyone that had a room redecorate by "Changing rooms"?

The episode of the smashed teapots just popped into my head and i went on a wee google changing room rampage. Some -most- of the designs are so shit and I've just seen some up close pictures of the work and it's horrendous.

Just wondered if any of you had appeared on it and what was the outcome? Did you love it, hate it? Did they restore things if they were shit?

The teapots! I can't cope!

curlies · 21/08/2018 13:07

@waffileyversatile did they get compensated?

PolkaDoting · 21/08/2018 13:08

Oh god, I remember the whorehouse/knickers one! She started crying and saying it was innapropriate for her kids to see it.

So funny!

Nutkins24 · 21/08/2018 13:09

Oooo the smashing teapots! Stuff of legend.

LemonRedwood · 21/08/2018 13:09

I'd completely forgotten about this show! The buzzfeed link above is great, but I never saw the smashed teapot episode Shock

wowfudge · 21/08/2018 13:14

There was one LLB 'designed' which had red panelling around paint effect animal skins on the walls. That was the one where the woman whose house it was said it looked like a tart's boudoir. She was fuming.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/08/2018 13:15

We viewed a flat once that had been on it. I remember it was a sort of cheap 90's Moroccan restaurant vibe. LLB had signed the wall, arrogant twit that he was.

The estate agent was surprised that no one was impressed by it. It was awful.

Nutkins24 · 21/08/2018 13:20

Omg! I remember that bed as well with the spikes/bulbs/shards of glass/whatever they are around it. So so funny.

MorrisDancingViv · 21/08/2018 13:20

I remember far too many of those episodes on buzz feed. I clearly had an exciting time as a teenager Grin

Can you imagine if it was done now? Every room would be grey with a coloured chimney breast. Kids rooms would have some Disney quote and stickers of some woodland theme.....

IhatetheArchers · 21/08/2018 13:25

Fortunately tie in merchandise books and dvds are available for mere pennies from all good charity shops and car boot sales.

I had a collection, but they went in the 'Great Declutter of 2013'.

wowfudge · 21/08/2018 13:28

I loved Changing Rooms - the results were infrequently any good, but boy was it fun to watch. Handy Andy was once at a conference I went to, on one of the stands. What that man couldn't do with MDF wasn't worth knowing!

SoupDragon · 21/08/2018 13:28

A friend was on one of the redecoration programmes but not Changing Rooms. Unsurprisingly, given the timeframe, the finish was apparently shit.

Didn’t LLB paint shocking “medieval portraits” of the couple who hated their gothic monstrosity?

wowfudge · 21/08/2018 13:30

Someone needs to bring it back. 60 Minute Makeover is nowhere near as good - though I fear the quality of the work must be piss poor.

CoolCarrie · 21/08/2018 13:31

Funny how we don’t see LLB or the others on tv nowadays...!

ScrambledSmegs · 21/08/2018 13:32

I read an interview with Carol Smillie where she said that there were two handy Andys. Quite often the non-tv one would make a mistake measuring something, and then tv Andy would be on screen taking the rap for something he didn't do.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/08/2018 13:33

LLB frequently pops up on DIY SOS these days. I quite like what he comes up with - suspect he was just being flamboyant and shit on CR to get himself noticed.

BruceAndNosh · 21/08/2018 13:35

Friend of a friend had 60 minute makeover do a few rooms in her house.
They ripped up her 6 month old carpets and did a cursory whitewash of the floorboards. everything was a bit slapdash
She rescued the carpets from the skip and had them refitted and sold the 4 Philip Stark Ghost chairs to pay for a decorator to finish it properly

Andtheresaw · 21/08/2018 13:35

@Springersrock Your house was number 6 in the link?
Did you have cats? I don't recall the episode but it looks like an extended cats activity thing. Most odd! Not surprised you got rid of it quickly. What had you asked for?

SentToTheSynByn · 21/08/2018 13:35

Not changing rooms, but I know someone who paid Linda barker to decorate a room - really shoddy work. She made a duvet cover and bed curtain and clearly could hem!

ScrambledSmegs · 21/08/2018 13:39

Waffly did they compensate them for the loss of the teapots? Same Carol Smillie interview claimed that teapot owner took the loss well but I can't believe that, I'd have been fuming!

SheSparkles · 21/08/2018 13:41

Changing Rooms was amazing! Sadly I too remember most of the episodes in the Buzzfee link 😂

Springersrock · 21/08/2018 13:42

@Andtheresaw. It wasn’t mine, they were friends of ours.

It was hideous

ScrambledSmegs · 21/08/2018 13:46

Springers how did they get that weird mdf construction out of the house? did They have to break it up or had it been made death trap modular style?

SilverySurfer · 21/08/2018 13:53

I don't know anyone who would be stupid enough and that goes for the garden makeovers too.

StringandGlitter · 21/08/2018 14:03

In the spirit of changing rooms in the late 90s I was inspired to paint my living room bright orange (believe the paint colour was called pumpkin to give an indication of the vividness) I had blue as a contrast colour, think blue glass accessories.

I thought it was wonderful.....

.... for six months, then I couldn’t stand living in this orange womb any longer. Turned it back to nice calm magnolia!
