Do you know anyone that had a room redecorate by "Changing rooms"?

The episode of the smashed teapots just popped into my head and i went on a wee google changing room rampage. Some -most- of the designs are so shit and I've just seen some up close pictures of the work and it's horrendous.

Just wondered if any of you had appeared on it and what was the outcome? Did you love it, hate it? Did they restore things if they were shit?

I like all the rooms in the Buzzfeed article (except the Arabian Nights one). I clearly have issues with taste Blush

My Aunt many moons ago paid LLB to come and remodel her whole house I was young at the time but the main house was a disaster zone. I will say what he did to my cousin's rooms were amazing though

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 22/08/2018 01:22

I am so glad for my (formerly) new build house with white walls. Some of the places we lived in before had shocking decor.

Katedotness1963 · 22/08/2018 03:01

I was always amazed that people would stand by and watch as their friends decent furniture was chopped to bits and then had MDF stuck to it. There were quite a few episodes when the owners returned and smiled at a room I would have burst into tears seeing. I’ve always wondered if there was a hoard of white emulsion hidden in the shed, just in case...

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 22/08/2018 04:06

That teapots episode makes me shudder. I collect pottery and it’s quite valuable. How bloody thick do you have to be to want to put pots on hanging shelves? Much less in the middle of a room where if they don’t fall down they’ll get knocked off? Jesus.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 22/08/2018 08:38

I have LLB wallpaper on my bedroom walls, it's lovely

Is anyone else picturing a repeat pattern of of the flamboyant LLB himself with his flowing locks and frilly sleeves.

Camomila · 22/08/2018 09:00

My DM loved changing rooms back when it was on. My parents bedroom is a more tasteful/less OTT version of the light blue angel bedroom.

Whisky2014 · 22/08/2018 11:15

Also the shelves of the teapots were just bare mdf waren't they? Why werent they painted?! Think it's the same on 2 of the seating mdf things too. Just cushions thrown on but no painted wood.

I've got LLB wallpaper in my house too (It's not him on it Grin). I bloody love it. I don't think you would ever know it's his, it's not flamboyant and hideous.

lemonsorbetinthesun · 22/08/2018 12:47

Personally I loved the house Doctor. She seemed to get the job done!

Bbbbb27 · 22/08/2018 12:57

Ooooh I loved the house doctor.....

IhatetheArchers · 22/08/2018 13:02

I loved the House Dr as well! Especially the bit where the owners were shown the film of people slogging off their house.

My favourite one (I think it was House Dr) was the one where the couple were getting divorced and there was this fucking hideous huge Medieval style fire place (1970s house) that the husband wouldn't countenance getting rid of. You could see the HD was thinking he was a dick .

CeeCeeAndAida · 22/08/2018 13:14

I can't have watched many Changing Rooms, but I do remember the ghastly Gothic dining room!

House Doctor was much better, Ann was clearly far more sensible than the CR team. But I always thought that her choice of colours was quite drab. I don't mean any neutral colours, nor do I mean that she should have chosen something vibrant - after all, she was trying to get rid of some bonkers colours too! But some of her neutrals seemed a bit dingy, for want of a better word! Maybe they were 'of their time' as I only watched HD on repeat some years later?

lemonsorbetinthesun · 22/08/2018 13:21

Yeah she was a bit "samey" with some of her ideas. But then the point was to make the houses appealing to more people as they weren't selling. So I guess that bland is a good way to go then!

CeeCeeAndAida · 22/08/2018 13:29

Absolutely. I used to work in the business back then. But some of the neutrals looked .... well ... drab!

SoupDragon · 22/08/2018 13:30

Yes, the House Doctor was meant to be bland.

I occasionally still try to say mirror like she did, just one syllable.

Lucisky · 22/08/2018 13:32

I remember one episode of Changing Rooms where they put a waterfall indoor water feature on one wall, like a mini niagara falls. I think it was the same room where there was a lot of child 'eye height' sharp angled (mdf, natch) furniture, and they (the residents) had toddlers. They pointed out that they were rather dangerous, but their concerns were rather breezily dismissed.
That bed with the screw eye hooks all around it in the buzzfeed article. Can you just imagine the pain of sitting or kneeling on one of those?

theliverpoolone · 22/08/2018 13:34

There was another programme where two guys (I think they were a couple, and one was called Justin??) did makeovers which were quite often equally as horrendous as the Changing Rooms ones. Can only vaguely remember it, but they used to bicker a lot about the design, I seem to recall.

LexieLulu · 22/08/2018 13:35

I remember one, where they had said they hated animal print, and their room was top to bottom leopard print or something similar 😂

Gosh I loved this program

Knittedfairies · 22/08/2018 13:46

The guy who ran my local carpet shop before he retired was telling me about being contacted by DIY SOS to totally re-carpet a three storey property belonging to a local woman who was a lone parent. He expressed an interest, knowing he couldn’t benefit from advertising as it wasn’t allowed, he would be expected to give carpets and fitting for free etc etc. He rang the woman to arrange a time that he could go and have a look and measure up. Obviously as he had a business to run, he wanted to fit it around shop hours, especially as he wasn’t being paid. She declined every appointment he tried to make; too early, as she liked a lie-in, too late because it clashed with tea time yadda yadda. I can’t only assume that she did the same to other trades; the programme never featured her.
My cousin had a tv makeover in one of her rooms; all the woodwork was painted with emulsion for speed. It didn’t last long.

PolkaDoting · 22/08/2018 14:05

Oh god yes, they were always doing ‘seating units’ that were basically MDF blocks with a thin square of foam on top. Sooooo uncomfortable!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 22/08/2018 14:37

This thread is brilliant and a fine reminder of how amazingly mental Changing Rooms was

Does anyone remember ITV doing a knock off version were they allowed kids to redecorate the house behind their parents back?

It was called Home On Their Own

For one family, all the neighbours were marvelling that this one mum who was really strict had even signed up for it.

They turned her dining room into a McDonalds style burger bar and she threw an absolute fit

(They did do a gorgeous Narnia bedroom too though)

Whisky2014 · 22/08/2018 15:01

Lol no i haven't seen that but sounds good. Narnia room...wow sounds fab! McDonalds bar not so good!

DryAsThingysFootwear · 22/08/2018 15:04

Didn't one of those episodes involved the kids having the entire side of their house painted like a football shirt? Striped with a player's number on it?

wowfudge · 22/08/2018 15:35

CR definitely introduced the British TV watching public to the joys of creating striped walls using masking tape.
