(But tentatively looking forward to autumn.)

I felt a bit less sweaty than last time. Hot and muggy here today. Supposed to be 17 and rainy here tomorrow, though! Hurrah!

Becca - OMD!!

you know you can turn off the DM function? And do report to MNHQ if you have had horrible ones.

you've been so kind to me when in such a tough spot yourself, thank you
Flowers

FurryDice · 17/08/2018 19:31

Yes, I loved the soft toy window debanger idea, Lighthouse. It was inspired.

Yes, have seen that news, Becca. What a shame. You can still post on this thread for support, though.

I know, and I've blocked people from sending me PMs, and reported, but its still upsetting when it happens.

I won't turn off the PM function because there are people I talk to on it about things I wouldn't put on here and I won't stop talking to them just because of twats. It doesn't happen a huge amount but has a few times.

Becca19962014 · 17/08/2018 19:33

X-post, I'll still be here, you've not got rid of me! But I'll need to think more carefully about what I post that's all.

Notlostjustexploring · 17/08/2018 19:47

I need to protect myself from getting shitty PMs from people about my difficulties with temperatures

Am I actually reading that right? Some people have come on to a thread about hating a hot summer, read that you are having the worst time of it (and I think on this thread you definitely have had the worst time this summer), that it is making a serious condition you have worse, and they send you private messages berating you for suffering????

?????????

The mind boggles. My brain just can't comprehend how awful some people can be. That is just such disgusting, base behaviour. And so cowardly. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that. Anyone doing that should be so utterly ashamed of themselves.

It's still too warm for a hug, so I'm sending you a fist bump of solidarity instead.Flowers

Notlostjustexploring · 17/08/2018 19:51

Someone upthread was musing about heatwave+sex? I've been idly wondering if there is going to be a birthrate slump in 9 months due to not being able to touch another human being this summer, or if there will be a peak because no one is sleeping well therefore more impromptu action.

LighthouseSouth · 17/08/2018 19:54

I would hope a poster would be banned for sending PMs like that?

KlutzyDraconequus · 17/08/2018 19:55

as threads will from Monday be around forever

It's not. Good idea imo, it'll make outing people quite easy, or at least a lot easier.
There'll be lots of back posting to search through :(

Becca19962014 · 17/08/2018 19:57

Users do all sorts of odd things believe me! I've been around forums from well before MN was even a thing so I'm used to it.

FurryDice · 17/08/2018 19:57

Yes I would hope so, too. That’s horrible, Becca Flowers

Ocado has been and now the sun has gone in it’s actually around 22 in here because there’s a good breeze blowing.

yeuch - I found the article, I read it on the way to work but I forgot how icky it was.

Is there a GIF of Marilyn Monroe in Seven Year Itch, talking about how she could soak the bedsheets in ice water, then saying "no...that's too icky"....because that was spot on!

however, pondering Notjustlost's point, the Indie has this

wow, the things we've learned this summer Confused

PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 17/08/2018 20:07

yes, newbuild here, and I'm at 25 these days. If I'm really lucky, 24 or even 23.5 in the morning, if I've had the noisy ventilation unit on at 100% all night. When it was warmer outside, it was 27-28 most of the time, and sometimes up to 32. No air con, no cross ventilation, nothing I can do!! grrrrrrr

LighthouseSouth · 17/08/2018 20:09

oh here it is

ignore the man waffling on about psychoanalysis Grin

Notlostjustexploring · 17/08/2018 20:16

The Internet really does make people behaviour rather strangely. I just don't understand taking the effort to do that. Peculiar people.

Our house seems to have plateaued at ~22, probably because the curtains are once again being opened so the house still heats up during the day. But it's just so very nice to see sunlight of the non-incinerating variety come through the window, especially when there is a breeze. I'm after another few degrees drop in our house, especially upstairs, then sleep will improve again.

I'm taking two weeks off now to just enjoy pottering around the house. It feels like it's been so long since its been nice, and not a heat-laden punishment, to be in my house.

Oh, I liked the guardian article posted. "luxuriating" in the heat indeed. I prefer my luxuriating to involve hot chocolate and a blanket.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be kicked off the thread for what I'm about to say, but there has been one advantage for me this summer. My athletes foot has cleared up due to constantly wearing flip flops and sandals, which is nice as due to pregnancy wasn't allowed to put the proper stuff on.
I'm appreciating it now, but it was a very poor consolation prize when it was 30degC.

Notlostjustexploring · 17/08/2018 20:26

I've just had a peek at the ONS website for birth and death rates. There was a decrease in birth rates in 1977, so the following year, compared to 5+ years either side.

Also, the death rate was higher in 1976 compared to the years either side...Sad

I'm no statistician, but I think statistics back up our collective position that a hot summer is a great big pile of shite.

StrangeLookingParasite · 18/08/2018 11:11

getting shitty PMs from people about my difficulties with temperatures

Jesus wept, do people really have nothing better to do? You sad fools, doing this.

SapphireSeptember · 18/08/2018 20:57

Becca That's awful! What utter arseholes. Angry I'm sorry you have to put up with that nonsense. Sad Here's some internet Chocolate in lieu of real life hugs.

Listen up peeps, if you have nothing better to do than harass someone on the internet you need to get a life, or a hobby, either will do, I don't really care. And if you come after me, you will regret it!

Yesterdayizdone1 · 18/08/2018 20:58

And if you come after me, you will regret it!

😅

PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 18/08/2018 22:21

any of you people in new builds had exterior blinds put up? It is supposed to be one of the better solutions to overheating, and a lot more effective than internal blinds.

What sort did you get? I'm wondering how much it costs (even vaguely) to have the sort that are partly see through, remote controlled roller blinds.

And did you have to get permission from the freeholder to get them installed? Did they object?

HelenaDove · 18/08/2018 23:50

Becca thats appalling.

I cant see the full article but i do like the headline.

Where's my soggy end? Not a euphemism Grin

Pickle

That's what we need. Next time any work is done involving scaffolding I'm going to ask if we can maybe do that (we can't sort it ourselves). I think others on this side of the building would like it.

Sadly the building isn't due a clean or repaint for at least two years.

It might not be possible though. Certainly I can't see how we'd get them above the balcony window (due to glass issues and electric line issues) so possibly the same problems apply across the board.

Just really hope next summer is a normal one!

SapphireSeptember · 19/08/2018 00:39

Helena They so like their hyperbole don't they? Grin It's hardly soggy, it just rained a bit!

LighthouseSouth · 19/08/2018 00:41

Ps yes woukd need permission from freeholder but can't see why they'd say no, it would add value to these crazy hot flats

We've had people ask us to switch the heating off in winter, it wasn't on!

Air con would def add value, hence why mgnt co looked into it.

PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 19/08/2018 09:58

I worry about permission from the freeholder because it would change the look of the whole side of the building - I don't think everyone else would necessarily want it too, as there are other things about the position, layout, direction, size etc of their flats that make it cooler. And it would need drilling into the bricks etc to install them.

It would be complicated to do though, as there are basically two corner walls and they are mostly glass!! Floor-to-ceiling. There are two places with part of the window that opens outwards, and two doors with handles. So it's like it would need about 8 separate bits of blind, each controlled individually. And then it would still have to fit inside the door handles. And I suspect that would all end up being very very expensive. But I can't find any guideline prices online, so I have no idea really. To make it useful, it would need to be remote controlled, as I don't want it down all day - I work from home and need to be able to see out to some extent (and for various reasons, I also want there to be some visibility from outside to inside!).

Awnings are possible too but as I'm on a main road, ground floor, I worry about vandalism, as lots of drunk pedestrians walking by.

I don't think our management co. would look into it as most people in the building wouldn't need it.

Air con would be great, but my windows aren't the sort to easily vent out of (and I wouldn't feel safe leaving them open at night, on the ground floor), so that means some other solution that involves going through walls and having outside units, which again might be a nightmare for permission. Not to mention expensive to do, to run, and to maintain. But it's worth thinking about. It would be such a relief.

LighthouseSouth · 19/08/2018 10:54

Pickle, you sound like you are in the same position as us.

in the end I think it might not be possible for all those reasons.

one minor thing we heard might help - we have a an ancient sofabed. It's hard to explain but it's a traditional fabric one and goes all the way down to the floor. I have been reading up and apparently if we get a futon, with all the air flow as it won't reach to the floor, it will help a bit?

also apparently if we get rid of a sideboard - basically the less furniture the better - that might help a bit. I find it hard to believe though.
