Seriously tacky and grim...

Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

No, Torn, I'm going to block you up in a wall covered by flock wallpaper and wood chippings

It's only on the internet, so no one would ever know.

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:05

++hides the wallpaper paste++
As long as I have that, I'm safe...

... for now

and to those who are saying that teasmaids are great... what with the tea first thing in the morning and all.

Yes, that's lovely - waking up to a cuppa.

But what about the milk???? Do you put it in the night before? (so it goes stale when the heating kicks in?) or does your teasmaid wake you up, but then you have to get out of bed to get the milk? Or are you posh and serving with lemon?

My grandparents also had this over-the-bed tray. NOT the one I've inserted, but I can't find an image similar. Theirs was more square, less angled. With more gold (colouring).

Torn, you are NOT safe from me. You laughed at not with. Never sleep easy again.

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:09

That is NOT an over-the-bed tray.
That's is what grandparents used to use for contraception to keep granddad off 'em.

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:10

If I could sleep easy I'd be in bed by now!

++ Makes note to keep one eye open in bed ++

contraception isn't what it used to be

AsAProfessionalFekko · 16/08/2018 01:14

Have you lot been raking through my sisters garage?

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:15

The advantage of that method was that she could be protected from front and either side.
The teasmaid was actually a secondary form of contraception if the first one failed. She'd pour a scalding cup of tea over him, and still have one left for herself to recover from the ordeal.

hey, my amazing/posh aunt also used to have this THING in her kitchen sink. Obvs, this is YEARS before any kind of recycling.

Basically, you scraped all the food waste (the uneaten bits, including bones) into your normal sink, and then you pressed this button and it "ate" your waste down the plug.

Anyone else even heard of this? I wouldn't even know what to google to post an image or a link

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/08/2018 01:17

Spangles

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/08/2018 01:18

Does anyone know how to chew like a Texan?

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:19

They still have those. Just a macerator.

Wait... hold on... is this how you're gonna get rid of the body?

OP posts:
TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:21

I loved Texan bars!!! they seemed to last forever.
And curly wurly's were longer and thicker back then...

++ don't... just don't... it's too obvious ++

DON'T question me.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/08/2018 01:24

And Wagon Wheels WERE so big that "you just had to grin to get them in"!

And don't even get me started on how thick the chocolate used to be on Cream Eggs and just how hard they used to be to eat, and how pathetic they are now.

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:26

I can't whistle, I've been bound and gagged by Keep. I'm only managing to type this with my toes.

And Charlie's Angels was cool.

And we all believed in the 6,000,000 dollar man and the Bionic Woman

And (a bit later) I wanted a car like KIT

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:29

Caramac were lovely too.
and Topic, but they've made a comeback.

Wagon Wheels used to be bigger than my hand, and now they are nowhere near. So it's obvious that from age 8 to age (insert old age here) they have shrunken!

I had a car like KIT!!!

Well, they swapped the K with an SH, but similar...

I remember the old mesh stocking at Christmas where you could see an apple and an orange, chocolate coins and a snow storm, and lindt animals...we then moved on to pillow cases but the mesh ones were my favourite

Seriously tacky and grim...
TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 01:41

OK, bedtime for me - I should have more tat tomorrow.
The thread's morphed into nostalgia, but I'm loving it! It's not what it used to be though ;-)

G'night you lot!

And remember... do not drink and type!

I don’t have photos sadly. But the house we moved into in the early 1980’s was a shining beacon of 1970’s interior design - it had one yellow bathroom and one purple bathroom, and dark brown carpets throughout. Lush.

We also had very dark green china with a black pattern and my dad had a moustache that was bigger than my brother’s football goalpost!

AlexaAmbidextra · 16/08/2018 03:16

Capodimonte. My grandmother bought me this very one! It used to sit on top of my television. Gruesome. They were bloody expensive too.
