What speed do you usually do on the motorway?

When driving on the motorway I drive at 70 mph when traffic conditions allow. I'm frequently overtaken by cars going faster than me. So who are all these people driving at 80 or 90 miles an hour and why don't they worry about getting a speeding ticket or being pulled over?

I always think the same. I go at 70 mph.

PUGaLUGS · 14/08/2018 17:08

I do the same as you.

Because they think it won’t happen to them? I dunno really.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/08/2018 17:11

I drive around 70-75 mph. I have no idea how people get away with driving so fast and not getting caught.

70mph or less depending on conditions.

I prefer sticking to the limit. You're not having to look out for speed cameras and you know that if the worst happened and there was an accident your speed wouldn't be a mitigating factor that diminishes the responsibility of the other party (especially when you factor in the "depending on conditions" element too).

I'm quite possibly the world's most boring driver but I really don't care.

DappledThings · 14/08/2018 17:16

80-90. Got flashed once, nothing happened after. I know it's too fast. No justification really other than I'm not the only one.

Even my mum admits to average 80 these days.

Wotrewelookinat · 14/08/2018 17:19

60mph, mostly for fuel economy, my car drinks diesel above 60.

Babdoc · 14/08/2018 17:21

The speed limit on German motorways is 81mph, and large rural stretches of their motorways have no limit at all. Do you really think that German drivers are magically better than British ones?
Or is it more likely our 70 limit is set too low for a three lane road with no traffic lights, roundabouts, cyclists or other hazards?
I regularly cruise at 90mph on empty motorways, and have done 110mph when on emergency call. I’ve never had an accident in 36 years of motoring.

StuntNun · 14/08/2018 17:25

Babdoc I agree that the 70 mph speed limit is too low, especially with modern motorways where the speed limit is lowered when the road is busy. If you regularly drive at 90 mph have you ever been pulled over or got a ticket?

MaxPepsi · 14/08/2018 17:27

I average at about 90, according to my speedometer. No idea what speed I'm actually doing but it's less than that.

Cruggs · 14/08/2018 17:29

80mph. Was told once by a policeman that they never stop you for speeding unless you are going over 80mph.

reeldoop · 14/08/2018 17:32

I'm also 80 ish, thats is the prevailing speed on the motorways i use (when it's not crawling along at 15) as I was taught to keep up with other traffic in favourable conditions. I have never been stopped or pulled over or dollowed or had a ticket or points.

Mamadothehump · 14/08/2018 17:33

Not a frequent motorway driver but close to 80 when I do

NoPhelange · 14/08/2018 17:33

With no kids in the car i have in the past driven at 90. I have now conciously started doing 70, up to 75 if overtaking. Mostly for fuel economy, my petrol flies down when i go above 70, and partly due to knowing how bloody worrying it can be when a car flies up my arse and past at 90+ miles per hour. Theres a big local crackdown on motorway speeders too, and you'll often spot marked X5s sat on sliproads waiting for people to fly past them. I do think 70 is too slow at times, but at the same time i wouldn't want to be going much faster in an accident given your chances at the speed limit are already pretty grim.

flyingsaucersherbet · 14/08/2018 17:34

Another 80 Ish person here. I just keep up with the traffic and my ex was a police driver who said they rarely stop people at that speed unless there are other factors (swerving / dangerous driving etc)

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 14/08/2018 17:35

Probably about 75. My car can't really get much above 80 anyway, DPs car is really powerful and I could easily accidentally get to 100 on an empty road without noticing!

DoneDisappeared · 14/08/2018 17:35

I'm impressed that y'all are able to maintain those speeds. Generally there is so much traffic when I drive on them I'm lucky to average 65 mph

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 14/08/2018 17:36

80mph feels like a natural motorway speed if that makes sense

PaddyF0dder · 14/08/2018 17:36

@Babdoc

I hope you lose your license.

110mph when on call is unjustified. I’m guessing you’re a doctor? I am too. Zero justification. 90mph also completely irresponsible and breaking the law. Hopefully you’ll face reality some day.

DappledThings · 14/08/2018 17:36

I usually only get up to that when I'm heading to my parents and leave at 5am!

namechange2pointoh · 14/08/2018 17:37

I regularly cruise at 90mph on empty motorways, and have done 110mph when on emergency call. I’ve never had an accident in 36 years of motoring

But if you did, your chances of surviving would be significantly less. So would those of the other parties involved.

namechange2pointoh · 14/08/2018 17:38

I do 70mph where conditions allow. I do that because it is the law and because I don’t live in fucking Germany. Someone ALWAYS brings Germany into these threads Confused

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 14/08/2018 17:43

70 although I can edge my way up to 90 if I don't keep a watch on it. Normally I put the cruise control on if I just can't seem to stick to it.

Howhot · 14/08/2018 17:48

70-80 when conditions allow.

PattiStanger · 14/08/2018 17:48

New smart motorways will fine you over 70, police might not stop you under 80 but there's no leeway with the cameras

LyndorCake · 14/08/2018 17:49
  1. I've very recently sat my speed awareness course so im paranoid ha! I use my cruise control to maintain the speed otherwise I end up going faster than I mean to. I always get overtaken or other cars up my bum or flashed. Just makes me chuckle
