What speed do you usually do on the motorway?

When driving on the motorway I drive at 70 mph when traffic conditions allow. I'm frequently overtaken by cars going faster than me. So who are all these people driving at 80 or 90 miles an hour and why don't they worry about getting a speeding ticket or being pulled over?

65mph on the flat or 70mph downhill. My car is only an 800cc engine and it goes slower up hills. I've got a sign on the back saying "I'm going as fast as I can". Grin

eyeswideshit · 14/08/2018 17:50

Between 70-75mph. That means doing 80-85 on my Speedo though.

DrDreReturns · 14/08/2018 17:52

I stick to 70 now
Wasn't always the case when I was younger but it's something I've grown out off.

  1. 75 when overtaking. Never been flashed. Advanced driver training said 75 or under and police won’t stop you.
Aragog · 14/08/2018 17:56

I normally do around 75mph I guess. I know I don't rigorously stick to 70mph, but I don't like going too fast, My little car is certainly capable of it, but I am not keen on driving fast. The capabilities of my car, esp regarding acceleration is useful for overtaking which is beneficial. At slightly above the limit I am however resigned to the slow lane, and using the middle to overtake slower lorries and vans. The middle lane and the inside lane are remarkably quicker.

Whilst on MN most people appear to say they drive no faster than 70mph, that is not my experience in real life, where most traffic goes substantially quicker.

Depending on conditions anything between 50-90mph

50mph - summer season, caravans everywhere
90mph early morning/late night empty motorway. It's quiet here. Matrix signs are a rarity, no chance of smart motorways or anything fancy like that.

Usual average is 70-80mph for when/where I travel via motorway in good conditions.

I however, am that person who will overtake the police car that is travelling at 69.5mph. I'd far rather risk being pulled over (chances minimal) for travelling in excess of 70mph than having to get stuck in the far more dangerous nose-to-tail-look-out-police-everyone-throw-the-anchors traffic that accumulates behind them.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 14/08/2018 18:03

@TroysMammy my first car was like that (although 995cc and 5 gears!) but at 70mph it'd start to rattle and bits fall off. It also had the structural integrity of a wet paper bag in the crash tests but you can never beat your first car! Me and the dog did thousands of miles in that thing in our youth Grin

KittyLane1 · 14/08/2018 18:15

I try to stick to 70, I don't have a lot of points to play with Wink

Justanotheruser01 · 14/08/2018 18:17

70 because that's the law.
You wouldn't break other laws so why this one??

Sarahandduck18 · 14/08/2018 18:21

77 because I’ve heard the cameras are set for 10% above the limit.

TokyoSushi · 14/08/2018 18:21

About 75 here

StuntNun · 14/08/2018 18:22

Between 70-75mph. That means doing 80-85 on my Speedo though. @eyeswideshit is your speedometer that inaccurate?

OP posts:
malfoyy · 14/08/2018 18:23

70-80mph. I usually only go higher when overtaking middle lane higher then back to 70 again.

namechange2pointoh · 14/08/2018 18:28

77 because I’ve heard the cameras are set for 10% above the limit

Interesting logic. Do you break other laws for similar 'won't get caught' reasons?

whiskeysourpuss · 14/08/2018 18:28

In the mornings when there is only me & a few lorries on the road 80-90 on the way home when it's busier 70-75

GruciusMalfoy · 14/08/2018 18:32

I try not to go much above 70. If I'm overtaking someone and there's another car speeding up at the back of me I've been known to push it to 75 to get out of their way quicker.

Sammysquiz · 14/08/2018 18:36

70mph. I recently did a speed awareness course (I did 47mph in a 40 zone) and it’s completely changed my attitude towards speeding.

eyeswideshit · 14/08/2018 18:36

@StuntNun Yep. The higher the speed the more inaccurate it gets. So now I follow what my sat nav says

BishopBrennansArse · 14/08/2018 18:38

Depends whether or not there are cameras. Generally never over 80 even with no cameras tbh

Kezzie200 · 14/08/2018 18:38

Its not too slow for modern conditions. There is an increasing number of vehicles on our roads, more traffic treating it like a video game and not giving appropriate distance and time on lane changes, and far more pot holes.

There was a time I would have agreed, but not now.

MrsMcW · 14/08/2018 18:42

Somewhere between 75-80. Over 80 and I feel less in control of the car so that's my max!

Apparently there's a 10% leeway on cameras to allow for different cars, so you're safe to 77mph. Not sure how it works, but it's something like that a speedometer reading of 60mph on a higher powered car will be marginally faster than 60mph reading in an older car. No idea if that's correct but I haven't been done for speeding yet!

Seqkat · 14/08/2018 18:43
  1. Occasionally creeping over if overtaking a few people at once. However, I'm not always as careful as I should be to check it if the motorway is clear, so may sometimes be around 75 for longer than I'd like - my car has a small engine, which means that I can feel if it's working higher and my speed is creeping up, which helps me keep it at around 70, but I know I will need to keep a much better eye on it if I ever get a bigger car. I can therefore see how people in better cars would similarly drift into cruising at 80, although I don't approve. Must do better myself.
NotUmbongoUnchained · 14/08/2018 18:47

Anywhere between 70 and 110 depending on how late I am!

theveryhighlife · 14/08/2018 18:47

Usually around 80, if it's an average speed check area I usually pop on my cruise control around the speed limit.
I can't stand middle lane hoggers or those who deliberately stick to 70 in the ' fast lane' to police other people's driving. This usually means people undertake them, which is more dangerous than doing 80 (conditions permitting)

MiddlingMum · 14/08/2018 18:51

60 to 70. Don't want to risk killing myself or other people.

Also, it's not nice when you see a car go past at about 90 miles an hour, then about 100 miles further on you see the same car mangled up, surrounded by emergency crews, with what's clearly a body being stretched away and another body in the front passenger seat Sad
