What speed do you usually do on the motorway?

When driving on the motorway I drive at 70 mph when traffic conditions allow. I'm frequently overtaken by cars going faster than me. So who are all these people driving at 80 or 90 miles an hour and why don't they worry about getting a speeding ticket or being pulled over?

Drive at 85/90, not been ticketed. I drive sensibly ie not lane changing or up people's backsides. If conditions require, I will drive an appropriate speed...hence about 30 in driving rain.
Safer to drive fast and consistently along with other traffic than slower and lose concentration. My reactions are good and am never complacent about others on the road and their general inability to drive. For the record I don't drive an Audi or bmw as those drivers really do tend to be complete knobjockeys.

OliveOrTwist · 15/08/2018 20:47

80 to 90. Never had a speeding ticket Smile

Jupiter9 · 15/08/2018 20:48

Usually 55 mph behind the lorry

What you need to do is work out the diatanxe tou will be travelling without changing speed, then work iut how many kinutes you actually save. And it is a few minutes. When youve worked that out, the risks acossiated with speeding look absolutely pointless.

specialsubject · 15/08/2018 21:30

apart from the fact that it is illegal, all you speeders must either have loads of money or have sex with someone who does. drag goes up as square of speed and you can be using up to 20% more fuel.

stuff the planet, too - but this is mn and no one gives a damn for that.

lakehouse · 15/08/2018 21:37

As fast as I possibly can. On the m25 that's about 15mph 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ontheboardwalk · 15/08/2018 21:39

I live near the M60 and M6 and the infamous never ending smart motorway road works. I don’t think I’ve done more than 30 mph on a motorway in the last 5 years!

ElinorOliphantIsCompletelyFine · 15/08/2018 21:42

I don't drive but my partner will often do 70-80. He's been known to go over 100 on the way to visit family up north, but everyone on that particular motorway seems to do it.

feesh · 15/08/2018 21:50

I average about 90 if conditions allow. I do a considerable mileage and have done for many (many!) years.

Believe it or not, I’m actually a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and when I took my test (with the county police examiner), I was doing dead-on 70 on the motorway and he gently asked me if I felt that it was the best speed to be doing. I said I didn’t feel comfortable and that I’d feel happier doing 80. He said he’d allow me to go up to 80 because of the road conditions and the fact that it was important to make good progress in keeping with the rest of the traffic.

This was over 10 years ago though, and roads have got a lot busier and slower since then, so I don’t know if his advice would still stand.

I know 90 is fast, but I create space around me at that speed and feel comfortable. I have tried to slow down but I feel very uncomfortable as it’s difficult not to be surrounded by other cars and I feel hemmed in. I love motorway driving and I concentrate 100% on it and treat it as something of a tactical game. I find it quite scary when people say it’s boring - are they not concentrating?!

theboxofdelights · 15/08/2018 21:58

My friend teaches driving for the Met, whatever the most advanced level of certification is, that is his job. All these folk saying how good their driving at excessive speed is makes me laugh - do you know how many experienced fast response drivers don’t pass or don’t get recertification? Well neither do I but I know that a fair few don’t.

Yet here in MNet land folk decide they are soooo good that they can drive at 90 mph because they said so.

DENMAN03 · 15/08/2018 21:58

Usually around 75-80... I find I quicken up if driving long journeys though, say over 4 hours.

Armi · 15/08/2018 21:59

Were any of you the stupid woman in the Lexus on the A1 near Stamford today? Tootling along at under 70, so I, doing about 73 with the flow of traffic, overtake, whereupon you suddenly accelerate to about 90, pull in front of me and then slam your brakes on because you didn’t bother checking what was happening in the road ahead. Your fuckwittage continued for several miles - slowing right down then speeding up to 90/100mph as I went to overtake you, before slamming your brakes on. All the time you seemed to be admiring yourself in the rear view mirror and flicking your hair about. I dropped well back in the end - I had a child in the car and my sense of self-worth doesn’t rely on winning an imaginary fuck around race on a busy dual carriageway.

Am not sure if you were upset that a dowdy, middle aged woman in a dowdy, middle aged car was overtaking glamorous you in your big shiny vehicle, or whether you don’t have a long enough attention span to drive a car safely. Anyway, I hope your day picked up. You must be pretty miserable if the high spot of your morning is trying to cause a major accident.

"Believe it not not"

NOT!

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 15/08/2018 22:07

On the M3 and M25 to name just two you can be lucky to do 60,, depending on time of day/daily accidents. There are speed cameras every where along both.

Last time I was on the M25 a month ago it was 4 lanes of 40/50 then stop.

People who drive on roads regularly know where the cameras are I assume.

ivykaty44 · 15/08/2018 22:10

I really don't want to cause a crash by speeding, I doNt want to lose my licence, get fined, so I drive at the limit

The new smart motorways just fine if you go over the limit don't they?no doing 80 and it won't matter?

ChilliPowderMild · 15/08/2018 22:39

I stick to the speed limits wherever I'm driving.
On the motorway I intersperse periods at 70mph with breaks over in the slow lane perhaps at 60. I have good lane discipline and never hog the middle lane, such people annoy me.
I like to alternate speeds and ring the changes with air on, open windows, etc on long drives.

ChilliPowderMild · 15/08/2018 22:40

That sounded a bit pompous.
I was once a couple of points from disqualification due to numerous speeding offences and then I realised how important my driving licence was to me. So now I am a good girl.

Bouledeneige · 15/08/2018 22:45
  1. In the past I was naturally a bit of a speeder. But the controls and cameras changed that, a few points in the past, and I really truly don't want to kill anyone. And I guess I've just got a bit more chilled (old). Whats the rush?
bluemoonchances · 15/08/2018 23:00

@theboxofdelights the officers who don't pass or get recertification aren't failing because they're going too fast I can assure you. It will be about judgment and reading the road and environment around them. Many years ago on my first blue light course, I was repeatedly told I was too slow (hitting 100 on a motorway at one point) because the environment was safe to "make more progress " - go faster.

I would be interested to know if the people doing 70 and under who moan about cars up their behind and being flashed at , are they in the inside lane when this happens or are they actively overtaking in the overtaking lanes? The biggest issue on our motorways is people thinking they're fine to drive at exactly 70 in outside lanes. They cause the stop start traffic buildups. The middle and outside lanes are for over taking. If the lane on your left is empty you should be in it!!

bluemoonchances · 15/08/2018 23:03

And also I should add, if you are driving next to a car side by side, you should be in the same lane as the car on your left as you're clearly not actively overtaking!

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 15/08/2018 23:03

I usually drive over 70, so around 75, 80 tops. Although one day recently I was driving about 88, but that was unusual.
Motorways are perfectly safe to drive at 80 on. It's other drivers, usually the ones sitting at 55 or 60 you need to look out for.

Witchend · 15/08/2018 23:08

I do mainly 70. Although on the M25 I reckon it's a good day if it's over 40.

Muddlingalongalone · 15/08/2018 23:09

70-80 ideally. Car not amazing at over 85.
However I live between the M25 & M40 so realistically 40-50 is a bonus a lot of the time 😂

FlorencesHunger · 15/08/2018 23:09

I've seen the supers peed overtakers so often I wondered if I was wrong about the speed limit at times.

I mostly stick to the left hand lane and plod along at 70 if traffic allows and only overtake of someone is pootling along at 50pmh.

Going any faster really doesn't make much difference in how quick you get to your destination so it doesn't makes sense to do it along with the risks.

I've absent mindedly done 80mph once and only clocked it as I didn't feel in complete control at that speed. Notched back down to the speed limit and stayed there.

rosamore · 15/08/2018 23:19

I drive between 70 and 80 on the motorway. I know dh nears 100, but not with me or dc in the car, only coming home from work on an emptyish road (he's German and thinks nothing of it) never been caught speeding in his life - not a single point on his license.
