It's 'he is' or 'he's' not fucking HIS!!

Does this drive anyone else mad? More and more recently I'm seeing people write 'his' instead of 'he's' or 'he is'. Why?? For example "His going to the shop soon." It's not interchangeable with them so stop doing it!!

I regularly make the "they're"-"their" typo if I'm tired, but English is a foreign language to me (first foreign taught in school). I too find it annoying, doesn't make any difference that I make the mistake myself.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 12/08/2018 15:38

The 'needs fed' thing is dialect, IMO.

It's not strictly ungrammatical, but I really hate 'off' for 'from' in the context of present-giving - 'I got new trainers off my aunt for my birthday'. It sounds so grabby and rude - as if the gift had been snatched with menaces. I similarly dislike 'pregnant to' or 'having children to', as in 'I have two children to my ex and am now pregnant to current dp'.

SilverySurfer · 12/08/2018 16:22

I hate all of the above but particularly could/would OF instead of HAVE. I have noticed recently more people getting their tenses mixed up. Also hate the incorrect use of myself/themselves etc and some people seem to have a big problem with whether to use lend or borrow. Surely all this stuff was taught in school?

Sorry Tikiwoman there is no such saying as 'joint at the hip'.

At least we know the difference between “joint” and “joined” WinkGrin

Every single time that someone starts a thread about grammar, spelling and punctuation, there will be someone, or several people, who talk about grammar pedants and say that it doesn’t matter, so long as you can understand what is being posted. The point is, that very often, those mistakes make it very difficult to follow the post, therefore it is difficult to understand. It’s also wrong and I think it matters that it’s wrong, unless, as has been said, a poster has some difficulties with the written word.

If someone was in a shop, paying with cash and received the wrong change, would that be regarded as not mattering because it was just a mistake? Some of those phrases, such as that mentioned by Tikiwoman make no sense when they are wrong. ‘Reigned in’ is another. It isn’t royalty. Everyone makes typographical errors, but these are not such. I find it disappointing that we are increasingly accepting it as the norm, so I’ll carry on being pedantic and attempt to be accurate.

In addition to what @Foxyloxy1plus1 has said, people do judge you on it.

I come from part of the country that has an unfortunate accent. I know eminent scientists (two people who Spring to mind are an astrophysicist and a surgeon) personally who are at the top of their field. They're incredibly intelligent but as soon as they speak, people judge them on their accent and assume they're uneducated.

It's the same with grammar. If I see a website, or receive a letter or email with basically grammatical errors, I'm inclined to take my business elsewhere.

Losing weight not loosing weight.
Inside = floor
Outside = ground (not "floor").

Jimjamjooney · 12/08/2018 17:20

OMG yes! I tweeted about this a few days ago. Lots of the younger instagrammers I follow are guilty of this (don't judge me!)

SilverySurfer · 12/08/2018 17:24

EdWinchester · 12/08/2018 18:19

I have seen 'his' for 'he's' a few times. Shocking.

But it's 'would of, should of' that makes me want to claw my eyes out.

Paddley · 12/08/2018 18:40

People 'being fed up of it' has become fairly mainstream now. It just sounds weird.

Tikiwoman · 12/08/2018 18:48

Guienne · 12/08/2018 18:56

EdWinchester · 12/08/2018 19:04

Tikiwoman, I am shocked that the most basic tenets of the most basic rules of grammar are now lost on seemingly educated adults.

If that doesn't matter to you, I suggest you leave the thread.

Tikiwoman · 12/08/2018 19:10
