It's 'he is' or 'he's' not fucking HIS!!

Does this drive anyone else mad? More and more recently I'm seeing people write 'his' instead of 'he's' or 'he is'. Why?? For example "His going to the shop soon." It's not interchangeable with them so stop doing it!!

When people seems to be reality TV stars say generally when they mean genuinely.

SimonBridges · 12/08/2018 08:56

Today I saw someone selling ‘cheater draws’.

BellMcEnd · 12/08/2018 08:57

Yup, spanish, it’s pretty dire, isn’t it?

Another pet hate is “tryna” as in “I’m gonna tryna come to the pub later hun.” Confused.

I also have a friend that says bring instead of take - for example “I’m just going to bring Annabelle toilet before we head out.” She is a post grad (humanities) professional. Odd.

Tikiwoman · 12/08/2018 09:00

Oh the entitled grammar police

LittleCandle · 12/08/2018 09:18

Part of the apostrophe thing is spellcheck's fault. It doesn't appear to understand that things can be plural, so wants to add an apostrophe in. Using the wrong 'to' does my head in as well. I spent years correcting my DC when they said 'I seen', but XH seemed to think it was hilarious to encourage that but then he was a fuckwit that thought speaking more loudly would make a non-English speaker in their own country understand him. I hate seeing 'ect' instead of etc, would of etc instead of would have. I did have to metaphorically bite my tongue the other day when our HR department sent out a thing asking about the upcoming company meeting travel and dietary requirements and I am travelling by 'plain'. TBF, our head of HR is not a native English speaker, but I am so attuned to seeing mistakes (makes reading books hell and I am a trained proofreader) that I can't un-see them. I did used to send back letters to the DCs' primary school with the most blatant spelling and grammar errors corrected. The secretary was lovely, but completely uneducated, and the headmaster was a lazy misogynistic git and never bothered to read anything before attaching his electronic signature.

RedDwarves · 12/08/2018 09:20

Bogans around here use "his" for "he is" or "he's" and then use "he's" for "his". Drives me fucking mad. I listen to a podcaster who does it and it makes me ashamed to be Australian.

RedDwarves · 12/08/2018 09:28

Makes me queasy, needs gone from the vocabulary of written English.

This one is very American, IME. Couldn't tell you how many times I've heard, "Baby needs fed", "baby needs bathed", "phone is needing charged", "car needs serviced" etc. Gets right on my tits.

spanishwife · 12/08/2018 09:28

Apileofballyhoo apostrophes in general I think people struggle with.. I see a lot of 's used for simple plurals e.g. need to fetch some egg's. I also see "need to go to my aunties house" when it should be 'aunty's' singular.

Tiki it's not entitled... We are talking about people we know who really should know better (not belittling people who have had extremely poor education or learning difficulties). It's a question of "how don't you know?!" Rather than a "haha you don't know". I don't think it's entitled to be incredulous when incredibly successful and intelligent people in the senior management team at my work send an email saying 'your doing a great job'.

spanishwife · 12/08/2018 09:31

Same candle I do a lot of writing for my job so I am so tuned into it!

Phamously · 12/08/2018 10:18

I've seen examples like this on facebook 🙈

Definitely seen people use 'his' instead of he's.

I've also seen examples like, 'their having a great time'

Another annoying one is using been instead of being, like 'he is been so good'

Andthatsthat · 12/08/2018 10:40

I saw another one a while back, someone saying their children were ‘joint’ at the hip Confused joint bank account, elbow joint, joint of meat, yes. Joint at the hip????

FissionChips · 12/08/2018 11:00

This one is very American, IME. Couldn't tell you how many times I've heard, "Baby needs fed", "baby needs bathed", "phone is needing charged", "car needs serviced" etc

I’d have thought it was Scottish rather than American.

Tikiwoman · 12/08/2018 11:10

Joint at the hip is a saying
Some real know it all's on this thread

MonaLisaSimpson · 12/08/2018 11:21

Tiki I've heard of joined at the hip but not joint!

Why instead of while is another one, eg "having a date night why the kids are out" aaargh!

FissionChips · 12/08/2018 11:32

Joint at the hip is a saying

JOINED at the hip. JOINED.

Gildashairflick · 12/08/2018 11:42

As instead of has Angry

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/08/2018 11:45

I once had to correct my appraisal at work due to my manager writing "been" instead of "being" all the way through. There were some other mistakes in there as well, but that one happened almost every sentence. He is a teacher!!! Ok, so he doesn't teach English but he should have a basic grasp on fairly easy grammar. He's now a head at a different school. I have no idea how he can possibly do things like proof read letters and reports before they are sent out to parents.

Paddley · 12/08/2018 11:53

The presenter on Homes under the Hammer, "This place is a mess, it needs done." She says it often.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 12/08/2018 12:52

I have a persistent offender on my Facebook feed who uses "too" for all variants of the word ("it's been too years", "I'm going too the shop" etc.).

It makes me want to go round and batter her with a dictionary.

bellinisurge · 12/08/2018 12:59

@Tikiwoman - surely you are taking the piss?

SimonBridges · 12/08/2018 13:25

Joined at the hip, like the ‘original’ ‘Siamese twins.

FoxFoxSierra · 12/08/2018 13:26

Yanbu, it makes my teeth itch! The worst one I've seen for a while was a facebook post to a friend who has just had a baby from another friend of hers - "his gawjus hun" aaaargh!

BloomsButtons · 12/08/2018 13:30

He's instead of his is very annoying and I've seen it quite a bit on here recently.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 12/08/2018 13:44

starzig on the first page, p,ease tell me that was a deliberate mistake. 'I have never saw this' it's seen, SEEN for the love of god.

Where I live they say led down/in bed instead of laid, it gives me the most serious rage. I also get this rage on fb selling pages and marketplace, I'm fairly sure it's contributing to my ever increasing blood pressure Confused

golddustwomen · 12/08/2018 15:10

This winds me up so fucking much!
