But it's true, LadyD. Despite having to leave school at a very early age to go into business after the scandalous death of his father, thanks to Mr Hale's tuition he now has a firm grasp of Latin and Greek.

As you know, LadyD, I am a serious scholar of the classics and so the hours I have spent on the chaise longue with Mr Thornton, wrestling with the finer points of Greek declensions, have been some of my happiest.

I beg your pardon, LadyD. I have merely been commenting on Mr Thornton's intellectual prowess and his stamina when faced with a particularly challenging piece of translation.

Oh yes indeedy, we all know Mr Thornton is a dab hand at unraveling an ablative absolute.

Oh yes. And he understands the difference between a gerund and a gerundive. I always find that a very attractive characteristic in a gentleman.

In my experience, Maud is very selective over whom she allows Mr Thornton to study Plato with.

I have to admit Plato is all Greek to me, I just overheard a little discussion on the delights of Bradley's Arnold.
