Welcome to the new campus of the Academy for Advanced Armitage Studies, part of the University of Milton-Northern.

We offer courses at all levels from introductory to advanced and opportunities for independent research. Come and share your learning with us.

Nothing so exciting, more likely a lemsip type thing.
Do enjoy RH and wave to Guy for me. I know he does some very hoity toity sniffing in series one. One of these days I will crack and order the DVDs, I just know it.

I have found a fascinating book on Google books, Daily Life in the Middle Ages, so I am swotting up. It says there were no leather garments until the 15th century but we know different don't we?

PS and of course say hi to Johnny

Theresaholeinyourmind · 27/11/2010 21:09

''I just want to give him some soup. ''
Oho, so that's what they're calling it now!
No seriously, if not soup, it's fluffy blankets and cocoa. Those eyes indeed, the expression tugs at your heartstrings.
To paraphrase that modern Delphic oracle, Britney
Oops! they did it again!

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/11/2010 21:10

We got off to a late start with RH - we were delayed by Merlin - so it's only just started. Guy has just ridden in like Bad Lancelot. When I bought the dvds they were less than half price on Amazon - cheaper now, perhaps.

Surely all the book can say with any authority is that no leather garments are known before the 15th century. But, anyway, what does it say about leather?

Mr Thornton, being a man of discretion, won't be joining us for cocoa until the Offspring has gone to bed.

Yeah, being of a practical frame of mind, it seems to me that in that photo what Lucas really needs is soup. And (as you say) a fluffy blanket.

Shoes belts smiths aprons, yes, evidence for other garments no.
''The leather jerkin does not appear to have been created until the Renaissance''

And ladies' unmentionables a whole lot later than that. Must have been tres chilly when the wind blew...

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/11/2010 21:19

Just spotted a muspront earlier. Had meant to ask what the book says about pleather.

I imagine that the floor length skirt and three layers of petticoats would have done a lot to keep the draughts out. Until Ye Gappe opened their Underwearre department.

Just ploughing through the last few days YouTube offerings - am loving the 'Give a Little Love' one Grin

''Shaving must have been a painful task.Even with a well-honed knife it ...could have hardly been...comfortable. These conditions explain why men were often depicted with stubble.''

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/11/2010 21:24

Hello, MrsLN. Would you like a Polish cordial to drink as you watch?

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 27/11/2010 21:28

How awful though, I wouldn't feel right without my knee-length peach silk directoires, long skirts not withstanding.
Suppose you tumbled down those steep castle steps, with everyone looking on.

No mention of pleather, maybe they need to do some more excavations up at Nottingham Castle.

Mrs LN ignore my nonsense. It was a bad RH night at Theresa Villas.

MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 21:35

Polish cordial sounds fab - have so much catching up to do. Think I still have some more of Cold Fett to watch as well.

Think Series 5 is worth a viewing if you can get it cheap or from the library (I love my local library - can only assume they also have an RA fan in residence as they seem to have a quite impressive back catalogue!)

Not a huge amount of him in it so far but what's there is very, very nice! Was most impressed when I sat down for a quick 1st watch in the hour between getting home from work and doing the school run, and discovered to my delight that speedos occur about 5 minutes into the first episode Grin!

One has to admire your dedication, Mrs LN. The merest hint of a bit of free time and you are powering on with your research.
Re Cold Feet, Did you ''jump in with all the other ladies'' ?

MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 21:54
MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 21:56

This is the first evening I've had free all week so had to make the most of the slightest bit of free time.

There is a very sweet bit where Ramona has been holding out on him for a little while and tbh he's obviously just trying to talk her into bed but he does it sooo nicely....!

MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 21:57

I enjoyed Cold Feet anyway so it's not quite such an arduous task as ploughing through Robin Hood imo.

Bodenbabe · 27/11/2010 22:00

Evening, ladies!

Glad you liked my research earlier. Theresa, the 39" seconds thing wasn't from Cold Feet. It was a 1-second clip before that - he's in a car wearing a blue & white stripey shirt. Flowers, at the "I got myself an obsession" line - I hadn't noticed that!

Luuuuurrrve Lucas in his suit & red tie. Prefer the black shirt but the suit is a lovely change.

The pictures were gorgeous - that one does indeed look like a Caravaggio, good call!

Like Flowers, I have only seen the Marian-kebab scene on YT but I can totally understand feeling sad for Guy. It's because he is so sad - a strong man like that sobbing. It was a crime of passion. He just couldn't bear the idea of her not ewanting to be with him. Oh, it just breaks my heart. I wonder if there are any vids with Elton John's "Song For Guy" as background?

Welcome back, MrsLN!

Bodenbabe · 27/11/2010 22:02

Doh, I meant to say that 39" wasn't from N&S.

MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 22:06
Theresaholeinyourmind · 27/11/2010 22:09

Poor Guy indeed, Boden. We were talking about blankets and hot soup for Lucas earlier but I don't think even those would work for Guy. What would? Even his mum was a bad piece of work.

Pass the Polish Cordial , here I go again.

MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 22:10

And first minute of this one well worth a watch

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/11/2010 22:11

I can't remember whether this is in the university's archive of Guy vids because we have seen it or because it was being saved for future presentation. Either way, enjoy.

[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTCaCyLg1W4 I thought I was a fool for no one

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 27/11/2010 22:16

That short vid was really interesting, Mrs LN.
Only thing is it has upped my Polish Cordial consumption again. Poor Guy...
Grin

asmallbunchofflowers · 27/11/2010 22:18

Boden - Lovely to see you. But don't you think it was a tad insensitive to refer to Marian as a kebab? Theresa feels bad enough already.

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 27/11/2010 22:20

Some Pick and Mix I think we have yet to explore...

Really must go and get in the bath and back to Cold Feet - in fact that has just given me the genius idea to take portable DVD player into the bathroom and save myself some time Grin!
