My sibling is a celebrity AMA

I won’t be saying who they are.

I recently spoke to a friend about it who
had lots of questions which lead to an interesting conversation, things I’d never said or thought about before.

When I was younger I used to feel incredibly jealous of them and had a very short and unsuccessful attempt at creating my own fame.

Now I’m older with my own dc and have seen the effects up close I definitely think the negatives out way the positives and it’s not something I would ever want for my children.

Not really and I wouldn’t want to as it’s not my business and I probably wouldn’t want them to know mine. I know how much they’ve been paid for certain jobs and how much they’ve paid for certain things though.

Do your friends/colleagues (if you work) know you’re related to your sibling? Has anyone ever tried to forge a relationship with you to get closer to your sibling/find out stuff from you about your sibling?

I watch TV or see a friend if i’m bored but I guess we are all different!

So you Mumsnet when…. ?

I Mumsnet when bored!

I see friends because I want to see my friends!

Thank you. Have you ever had the chance to see behind the scenes of the TV programmes your sibling appears in? If so, is there anything that surprised you?

Would being a TV celebrity’s sibling open doors for you, e.g. if you wanted to work as a TV researcher, production assistant or any other backstage role, could your sibling get you your first job?

in the past, the main one would probably just be how different some people are on and off camera or the shear amount of people that sometimes seem to be needed for a seemingly simple job.

Maybe a bit if they were prepared to call in favours for you and get you contacts and information that could help but they couldn’t just get you a job.

It's not my AMA 😂

You said you found the thread interesting
I simply asked what did you find interesting?

Yes most people I know would know. Definitely when I was younger, now I don’t really give them that chance. People ask about them a lot but it’s hard to tell who’s just being polite or doesn’t know what else to say and who’s actually trying to dig for something interesting to gossip with.

OP, I couldn't say for sure who you are.

But - what I thought I recognised in the early posts was sympathy, perspective, humane intelligence.

Not specific details or vocabulary, but a way of thinking - which I thought I'd seen before, and remembered as unusual.

I am intrigued. Can you quote this posts where you saw sympathy, perspective, humane intelligence.

Sometimes but people don’t have the confidence that they do anonymously online so wouldn’t be so rude.

often small talk with people I dont know that well like colleagues can end with them just asking about my sibling or something they’ve seen them do. At my events they will end up getting extra attention and it did upset me and tbh I think they used to enjoy it which was annoying. Now they find it more tiring and difficult I can just feel upset and annoyed with them rather than jealous.

How do all these people in your life know who your sibling is? I can’t recall the last time I discussed a sibling with a colleague and even if I did… surely you don’t need to tell them that they’re a celeb?

zedtree · Today 15:35

Pinkgorilla101 · Today 15:04

This is a really interesting thread. I have some questions about when you were all younger. Did they always want to be famous. I am thinking maybe they are a middle child who wanted more attention?
Did you want to be famous because you loved, as a teenager, the attention they got? What made you stop trying to be famous? Did your other sibling try to go down the same route?
I can understand sports personalities becoming famous as it goes with the job but I can’t imagine wanting to be famous for the sake of it and am interested to know more.

I think so, I remember them being loud , confident and enjoying attention.
I didn’t love the attention but I felt that I should be more like that and wanted what I saw as an easy dream life.
I quickly realised it wasn’t very easy and I wasn’t going to enjoy it or succeed.
No, they weren’t interested. They already had a specific career they wanted.

I'm a great-grandchild of a prominent wartime leader. I won't reveal who, especially as I'm on my way to church - ill though I may be.

Many have tried to discern my ancestry, with nary a hit. "Ler" is the infinitive form of the verb meaning "to read" in Portuguese, something else they don't know.

Anyway, I've lived in Australia for ages now, content amongst the roos. "E velt happy here", they used to say about my father who brought us all down under.

Why would you not tell these many people that your great grandfather was a prominent wartime leader? Unless we are talking the leader of the “baddie” side @BeanQuisine ?

BeanQuisine · Today 15:40

TwisterSpice · Today 15:12

Huh?

Just throwing my 2p into the mix, love. It's all we can do.

The celeb might be Gary Glitter, might be Dawn French, might be Katie Hopkins, or just made-up bullshit.

Not much point feeding it really, but some are clearly entranced. 😂

Tinytotdriver · Today 15:42

Really good thread!

Can I ask if there was a programme made just based on celebrity siblings (like a documentary or reality TV) would you do it and why/why not?

When you see celebrities acting up/being wild in the press do you instantly think of their children/families, or not really?

Do you and your family know any other celebrity’s families that can relate to your life?

'Cos I'm only fibbing. 😊

Indeed. It's either Sophie Price or someone pretending to be her. I mean who gives a shit about this so called celebrity.

@zedtree have they ever been involved in a big scandal and if so, how did they and the wider family handle it?

Yes. Drink/drug driving, bankruptcy, lost custody of kids, revenge porn, etc etc

Thanks - I appreciate your answers.

I think you mentioned your sibling is not well known outside the UK - could you tell us a bit about why that is? Did they prioritise becoming well known in the UK rather than elsewhere?

I think you also mentioned them trying to break America and get better known there - what was that like for them?

I think it’s just harder for a uk celeb to become known elsewhere especially in the US which is so much bigger with so many others doing the same thing. I can’t think of many who have managed to do it. I also think humour and the personalities that are popular are very different other there.

When they’ve done work there in the past they’ve still be paid well and I think enjoyed it but they just didn’t get the offers and reception they got in the uk. They also have never wanted to move there which I presume you would have to do to really make it.

Why are you doing this? If you think it's bullshit, or ridiculous, just leave the thread?

You don't know who it is and you seem weirdly invested. It's quite odd!

All the people trying to guess and then they can judge and indulge in some gossip are the people the OP is talking about as users. The OP is trying to give us an interesting perspective and the constant is it blah? Is it blah? They are fame hunters who make people’s lives a misery.
This thread is a microcosm of the world. One person trying to give information and others dazzled by gossip. Interesting.

Absolutely LOADS of uk musicians, actors, presenters etc are known in the US. It’s one of our biggest exports.

Or, one person talking idle shit and the others having a good laugh at her. 😆

It comes across from the start: the OP had a tough time at school having a well-known sibling, who they say has challenges. They also felt envy in the past. They worry about their nieces and nephews. Friendships have also been affected. But despite the difficulty of having a well-known older sibling, they still love their sibling for who they are, and have carved their own path while having to be associated with the sibling in the minds of colleagues/acquaintances.

They are honest that it isn't always easy. They have referred to family disappointment in some of the sibling's choices, and that they worry about them. They also show understanding of the challenges the sibling is experiencing as complex - some of them under the sibling's control, some of them the outcomes of decisions taken a long time ago. Despite everything, they sound grounded, patient and self-possessed, which are relatively rare qualities on this forum.

@zedtree started an AMA about said sister. Without asking her. And hasn’t told her. And has told us personal things about how unhappy she is and her children’s unstable childhood.

Wow that’s really mean - a proper mean girl comment. And again the OP is talking about the people who judge famous people and then laugh at them. The OP is making famous people human, discussing their life, hope, mistakes etc.

You obviously know the difference between laughing with and laughing at someone, but then most mean girls do they just don’t care.

Sorry to derail your thread OP but I think some of the points you are making are being proved by other posters.
